If you're short on space and you don't need extra features like copying and scanning, the Dell 1130 could be a good option. It's one of a batch of smaller monochrome laser printers hitting the market, and it promises rapid printing, even though it only costs a modest £70 or so.Design-wise, there isn't much to the 1130. It has a small footprint of just 360 by 390mm. Its matte black paint job doesn't exactly draw attention to itself, but it should stand up to a fair amount of abuse over the years without showing up loads of bumps and scratches. As with many budget laser printers, the 1130 doesn't have a screen. Instead it only has two LED lights -- a green one to indicate when it's ready to print and a red one to tell you that it's in a spot of bother. Similarly, there are just two buttons on the control panel -- a blue power button and a red cancel button. As most of us only really interact with our printers via the software control panel on our computers, this isn't much of an issue.Setting up this model is a piece of cake. There's no Wi-Fi or Ethernet support, so the only way to connect it your computer is via USB. Before you install the printer's software, you need to give its toner and drum cartridge a shake to make sure the toner is evenly distributed.
Clearly designed as a personal printer for any size office, the Dell 1130 Laser Printer ($119.99 direct) is small enough to share a desk with and delivers an appropriate level of speed, output quality, and paper handling. Although it doesn't offer anything special to make it stand out from the crowd, and it's arguably a little pricey for what it offers, it's easily up to the job it's meant for. The 1130 has less in common than you might assume with the similarly named Dell 1130n Laser Printer ($179 direct, 2.5 stars), that I reviewed about a year ago. Aside from lacking a network connector (the giveaway that the 1130 is meant as a personal printer), the 1130 has a slower engine rating and a lower rated duty cycle (the maximum number of pages it can print per month without harming the printer). What the two share is essentially the same size and weight, at 7.8 by 14.2 by 15.3 inches (HWD) and 16 pounds for the 1130. That makes them both smaller and lighter than some inkjets, which also helps define them as personal printers. Both also offer the same paper handling, with a 250-page tray, which is generous for a personal printer, and a 1-page manual feed, a highly useful convenience that lets you feed different types of paper without having to swap out the paper in the tray.
This entry level laser black & white printer is targeted at those looking for an affordable and basic machine. Dell tells us that it's "ideal for small offices and work groups". It has 8 MB of memory but also exists in a networked version, the Dell 1130n, costing just under £100. The 1130 can't be beaten on price right now. The first thing you'll notice when you take the Dell 1130 out of its box is how compact it is. 36 x 39 x 20 cm and weighing 7 Kg, it's clearly among the zeros (fashion model speak) and will fit into pretty much any space you have available. However, while its size and price will certainly attract a clientele, we can't give it a high hardware rating. You just can't fit a maximum of technology into such a small volume. No colour prints, no copier, no scanner or fax, no double-sided and no network, wi-fi or card reader. It works to rule and that's about all you can say: it prints in black & white and is Mac, Windows and Linux compatible, with PCL6 support. There are two buttons on the front: on/off and the cancel button to stop prints after you've launched them. Announced at 18 ppm, the Dell 1130 keeps its promise.
