D-Link DIR-605L Cloud Router

D-Link's DIR-605L Cloud Router, ($40) announced at this year's CES, is not a remarkably noteworthy router. It's notable for what it lacks: It's a single-band, has no Gigabit Ethernet ports, and no USB port. It's also noteworthy for the one new feature it has: D-Link's mydlink cloud service. However, even with some of the remote capabilities you get using the mydlink service, the router lacks in performance and management. HardwareThe DIR-605L is a cheap router and certainly does not support the latest and greatest in networking hardware specs. Four 10/100 Fast Ethernet ports are on the rear panel. Two external 5dBi antennas are fixed to the chassis; you can't upgrade to antennas with higher gain. Theoretical throughput is up to 300 Mbps; considerably slower than single-band routers currently available that are capable of up to 450 Mbps, such as the Buffalo AirStation Nfiniti High Power Giga Wireless-N Router & Access Point (WZR-HP-G450H). Internal components include Realtek's RTL8196C chip. The chassis also features reset and WPS buttons. The device is small, with a plastic, black housing. There are seven LEDs on the top representing power, WAN activity, wireless status, and LAN port activity.

D-Link DIR-605L Cloud Router

Unveiled at CES 2012, the D-Link DIR-605L Cloud Router is the first cloud-based wireless router I've reviewed. While Cisco released its app-enabled Linksys EA series a while ago, the cloud features of these routers are not available until later this year. That said, the DIR-605L's new feature, which allows users to manage their home network no matter where they are, proved to be a great extra in my trials. Other than that, the new router is a dead-simple single-band wireless-N router that operates in the 2.4Ghz frequency. It has no other bells and whistles, lacking Gigabit Ethernet, USB ports, IPv6 support, and even guest networking, which is a feature available in almost all D-link's routers I've seen since 2009. The new DIR-605L more than makes up for its spartan packaging, though, by offering decent performance and very stable wireless signal. On top of that, you shouldn't expect much from a networking device that's priced at just around $40. And for those who don't need a high-end wireless network, the DIR-605L is worth every penny.

D-Link DIR-605L Cloud Router

D-Link DIR-605L Cloud Router Review: Strong Monitoring Capabilities but Indifferent Performance D-Dlink's DIR-605L is unique and inexpensive, but not exactly cutting-edge. As Wi-Fi routers go, the D-Link Cloud Router (DIR-605L) isn't a top performer--it has the basic 2x2 antenna array required for 802.11n certification, and its LAN ports support only 10/100 (not gigabit) ethernet. But it boasts some easy-to-use remote-access features that should appeal to small businesses and consumers who want to keep close tabs on network activity without spending a lot of money. Street-priced at a modest $40 (as of May 1, 2012), the Cloud Router supports iPhone and Android apps that let you log in over the Internet and see what devices are connected and what websites they're accessing. If you don't like what you see, you can also use the apps to block connected devices from getting online. These kinds of remote access features aren't new, but the Cloud Router and its mobile apps make them exceptionally easy for even the most nontechnical folks to set up and use. In my tests, the features worked, though with a few annoying glitches. Advanced features are hidden in the basic user interface for the benefit of newbies.
