Canon Pixma PRO-1
The Canon Pixma PRO-1 ($1,000 street) is Canon's new flagship A3+ photo printer, capable of producing high-quality prints at up to 13 by 19 inches. It is a step up from the Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II ($849.99 direct, 4 stars), employing more and larger ink tanks and clocking faster photo-printing speeds. In my testing, this massive printer consistently delivered magnificent, gallery-quality prints, and did particularly well in printing monochrome images and ones with very dark backgrounds. The Pixma PRO-1 measures 9.5 by 18.2 by 27.4 inches and weighs 61 pounds. Although large and heavy, it's not unattractive, with a matte-black finish and rounded corners. It has only 3 buttons: On, Cancel/Resume, and a button to open the ink compartment. The PRO-1 can print on cut paper sheets up to 13 by 19 inches. It has a rear tray that fits up to 150 sheets, as well as a single-sheet manual feeder, also in back, that supports thicker paper. In addition, it can print on optical discs, using an included tray. The PRO-1 sports a whopping 12 ink tanks, each with more than twice the volume and a lower cost per milliliter than one of the Mark II's 10 ink tanks.

The Canon Pixma Pro-1 A3+ printer stands at the top of Canon's Pixma Pro inkjet printer range. Priced at 799 in the UK and $999.99 in the US and aimed squarely at 'serious' professional photographers, the Pro-1 is pitched as the world's first 12-ink system.Strictly speaking, it houses 11 coloured inks (five of which are dedicated monochrome ones) plus Canon's new 'Chroma Optimizer' that's designed to cover the bumps between ink droplets, levelling the print surface and boosting its glossiness.Similar to Canon's previous range-topping A3+ printer, the Pixma Pro9500 Mark II, the Pixma Pro-1 uses Lucia pigment inks for improved fade resistance. Light fastness for Canon semi-gloss Photo Paper Plus is rated at 80 years, with prints on the same paper stock stored in an album said to last over 200 years.With a capacity of 36ml, each of the Canon Pixma Pro-1's 12 ink tanks holds 2.5 times the ink of those in the Pixma Pro9500 Mark II's 10 tanks. It might prove to be as thirsty as its stablemate, but at least it should mean less frequent cartridge changes.Frankly, you'll want to put off buying new ink for as long as you can.

The Pixma Pro-1 is Canon's latest addition to its A3+ (13-inch) pigment ink printer lineup. Intended to sit a category above, rather than replace either the Pixma Pro9000 Mark II or Pro9500 Mark II models, the Pro-1 sets its sights on a more discriminating and demanding user. As Canon described to us in an interview at the printer's launch, 'This is a top-of-the-line product...geared towards a 5D or 7D customer'. With the relative maturity of today's fine art inkjet printer market, Canon seems to realize that its success in going up against market leader Epson is likely to be depend on issues that extend beyond out-of-the-box image quality. Make no mistake, as the most expensive A3+ printer currently on the market (US$999/799/€749), the Pro-1 will have to deliver great-looking prints. Yet that alone may not be enough. In an effort to distinguish the Pro-1 from its competiton, Canon has also focused on changes that revolve around usability, convenience and most notably, cooperation with third party paper manufacturers. While Epson has taken pains to emphasize its own fine art paper offerings, Canon provides easy access to ICC paper profiles for the Pro-1 from paper manufacturers such as Canson, Hahnem hle, Ilford and Moab, among others.
