Canon Pixma MX870 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer

Some Canon printers represent a significant upgrade from earlier models, or even branch off in new directions. Others are better understood as a subtle refresh of an already solid design. The Canon Pixma MX870 Wireless Office All-In-One ($199.99 direct) falls squarely in the second category. Basically a slightly faster version of the Pixma MX860 Wireless Office All-In-One ($199.99 direct, ) that it replaces, it offers most of the same capabilities and essentially the same strengths, but with much improved network installation. The MX870 can fit nicely in a micro office, a home office, or in the dual role of a home and home office printer. It can print, scan to, or fax from a PC even over a network; can work as a standalone fax machine and copier; and can scan to e-mail by launching your PC's e-mail program and adding the scanned document as an attachment. Office-related features include a 35-page automatic document feeder (ADF) to handle multipage documents, and the ability to scan directly to a USB key. For pages that won't fit on the flatbed, the ADF can also scan at up legal size. Even better, it can duplex - turn each page over to scan both sides of a page.

Product Survey: Multifunction Printers

A high-end all-in-one multifunction that prints, scans, copies and faxes. The size of the ink drops (1 picolitre) and high print resolution (9,600 x 2,400 dpi) make it ideal for both pro use and photo enthusiasts. With an automatic 35 page double-sided loader, it is also wi-fi-ethernet compatible and can share content via a local network. The one drawback: the colour screen (6.2 cm) isn't a touch. There are 5 separate cartridges: a pigment black for office docs as well as a black for photos and the usual cyan, magenta and yellow. Using separate cartridges rather than the monoblocks used in budget models represents an economy of between 20 and 35%. The front is very much like that on the Pixma MX350. Same principle in terms of controls and navigation, with even more buttons on this model. What we're trying to say is, we'd like to see all these buttons replaced with a touch screen. The speeds are twice what you get on the latest Brother printers (365CN). Compared to the rest of the Canon range, they're at the lower end and will be perfect for home use. For pro use, the same recommendations as for the Canon Pixma MX350; you need to watch out for possible queueing problems.

Canon Pixma MX870

For $200 (as of May 26, 2010), the Canon Pixma MX870 color inkjet multifunction printer offers a lot of features and performance for the money, especially for small-office or home-office users. Its ink prices are good, too. One of several new inkjet MFPs introduced by Canon in recent months, the silver (with black accents) Pixma MX870 is both sporty and simple in design. Big buttons on the front control panel let you bring up its major functions (copying, faxing, scanning, and memory-card reading), and the menus appear on a 2.5-inch color LCD. Augmenting the traditional four-way rocker navigation button is a scroll wheel around its edge if you prefer to twirl through options; an 'OK' button occupies the middle of the rocker nav. The MX870's performance is more than adequate for a small office. On both our PC and Mac test platforms, plain-text pages emerged at a rate of 6.2 pages per minute. Color pages averaged 1.8 ppm on the PC and just under 0.5 ppm on the Mac. Also on the Mac, scanning a 7.5-by-9.9-inch photo at 600 dots per inch averaged about 45 seconds, while scanning a 4-by-6-inch photo at 1200 dpi took about 90 seconds.

Canon PIXMA MX870 review

The Canon PIXMA MX870 is a slightly more office orientated version of the PIXMA MP640, adding fax functionality and a 35-sheet ADF but losing the facility to print directly onto optical discs. Its stablemate earned a five-star review back in MacFormat issue 215, and the new machine succeeds admirably in living up to these high standards. The MX870's build quality is exceptionally good, as are the useful little touches such as the LEDs that light up to show an ink tank is fitted correctly. The paper tray opens automatically when the machine's about to print, and it's so easy to set up and use that you barely need its comprehensive printed manual. Connectivity is also covered through USB, Wi-Fi or Ethernet options. Its print quality lives up to the high standards set by recent Canon releases. The five-tank system uses pigmented black ink for text printing, giving vivid, clear results with very little bleed. It's waterproof too – perfect for envelopes and flyers. In our speed test, a 20-page document printed in four minutes, 58 seconds, which is a little slow but acceptable for a home-office machine.
