This mid-range multifunction printer is a compact four-in-one model designed for both home and office use. It can print, scan, photocopy and fax, and uses one colour cartridge rather than individual cartridges for each coloured ink. That's great for anyone who's sick of having draws full of replacement cartridges 'just in case', whereas more environmentally conscious users won't like having to throw away a whole cartridge just because one colour has run out. To be honest, the control panel isn't the most exciting we've ever seen. The colour screen does gain 2 cm in size on the MX330, although it's still relatively small at 6.2 cm (2.5 inches). Unfortunately, it's not touch-sensitive either, so you'll have to make do with physical buttons and arrow keys to control or adjust this printer. Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections mean that printing can be launched from any computer in your network, and the paper feed tray can be loaded with 30 sheets. As usual, Canon gives slower ISO print speeds than those we recorded with our test pages, which are less complex than the ISO standard documents. Canon promises 8.4 pages per minute for black and white or 4.8 pages per minute for colour, whereas we recorded 11.4 and 7.5 ppm respectively from our tests in standard mode.
The Canon Pixma MX350 color inkjet multifunction printer (for printing, scanning, copying, and faxing) offers a good assortment of features and capabilities for an affordable $150 (as of June 2, 2010). Though its ink costs are high, it's a better deal than the lower-priced HP Officejet 4500 Wireless, which has similar strengths and a few more weaknesses. The Pixma MX350 is easy to install and use. You can connect it via USB, ethernet, or Wi-Fi. Canon bundles a multitude of useful scanning and printing apps with the Pixma MX350; you can choose to install all, none, or some of them during the setup routine. The clearly labeled control panel includes buttons to summon major functions. The 2.5-inch color LCD shows menu options and also previews photos. A round, four-way rocker button with a perimeter scroll wheel simplifies navigation. The sturdy chassis has beveled edges that make the unit look less boxy. A 30-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) folds out from the top; a letter-size flatbed scanner is situated beneath it. All media types load into the vertical rear input slot, which has a plain-paper capacity of 100 sheets. In front is a 50-sheet output tray, along with CF, MS Duo, and SD media-card slots behind a small door.
