The shiny, black Canon Pixma MG8120 color inkjet multifunction printer (which performs printing, copying, and scanning), is nothing if not cool-looking--the control panel integrated into the top lid is a must see. But it also produces smooth text output at decent speeds, and its replacement ink costs are reasonable. Alas, up-front cost of the eye candy is far from negligible: The MG8120 retails for a whopping $300 as of September 27, 2010. The Pixma MG8120's most unusual feature is the 3.5-inch, tiltable color LCD with touch-sensitive controls integrated seamlessly into the top lid. The controls light up when they're needed and disappear when they're not. The layout closely resembles Canon's regular control-panel design, including the three buttons for selecting choices shown on the display. We found them awkward to use in conjunction with the more traditional navigation/selection buttons (which are always lit). Though we wish that Canon had included an automatic document feeder, the Pixma MG8120's features are otherwise plentiful. You get automatic duplexing, a 150-sheet undermounted tray for plain paper, and a 150-sheet rear vertical feed for all other media.
The Canon Pixma MG8120 Wireless Photo All-in-One Printer ($299.99 direct) is the latest incarnation of what amounts to Canon's top-of-the-line home photo lab. That's a shorthand way of saying that this inkjet MFP can print photos at high enough quality and from so many different sources - from strips of film to video frames from select cameras - that you can justify buying it for printing photos even if you never connect it to a computer. Like the Canon Pixma MP990 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printer ($199.99 direct, ) that it replaces, it's the best of its breed, and an easy pick for Editors' Choice. The MG8120 doesn't have much direct competition, because few MFPs can scan or print from slides and film negatives. Indeed, other inkjet MFPs that cost the same or more, like the Lexmark Platinum Pro905 ($399.99 direct, ) that I reviewed last year, tend to focus on office features. In contrast, as you might expect in a printer that you can describe as a photo lab, the MG8120 is distinctly lacking in those features. In particular, there's no automatic document feeder, no way to scan legal-size pages, and no fax modem. The paper handling is better than you might expect in a home printer, with two 150-sheet paper trays and a duplexer.
