Canon PIXMA MG6220 Review

With a glossy black finish, sleek curves and a wide variety of mobile printing options, the Canon PIXMA MG6220 looks like a good choice for anyone looking to buy a serious all-in-one printer for their home or small business. Still, compared with competing all-in-one printers from HP and Kodak, the $199 Canon PIXMA MG6220 features a price tag as hefty as its weight. Is the PIXMA MG6220 worth the money?Click to EnlargeThe 18.5 x 14.5 x 6.9-inch Canon PIXMA MG6220 isn't as wide or long as the HP Photosmart 5520 (21.5 x 17.5 x 5.6 inches), but the extra inch of height makes the MG6220 appear much larger than it actually measures. At 20.1 pounds, the printer also weighs significantly more than either the Photosmart 5520 (11.2 pounds) or the Kodak ESP 3.2 (16.5 x 12.4 x 7 inches, 11.5 pounds). Only the business-focused Epson WorkForce 845 (17.6 x 14.5 x 11.8 inches, 22 pounds) matches the PIXMA MG6220 pound-for-pound.Like the Photosmart 5520 and WorkForce 845, the PIXMA MG6220 sports an all-black look. The glossy finish, which covers every inch of the MG6220's surface, looks sexy but picks up fingerprints and smudges easily.

Canon Pixma MG6220

Canon's new Pixma MG6220 multifunction printer carries an impressive list of features compared with other consumer-level printers that sell for $200. This capable machine achieves top-scoring marks in both speed and output quality, but also innovates with features you can't get with the competition, like a 3-inch display that pairs well with the touch-sensitive control panel. The touch sensitivity can use some tweaking, but if you're on the hunt for a printer truly worthy of its all-in-one moniker, the Canon Pixma MG6220 won't disappoint. The Pixma MG6220 features a thin shape and a unique design that incorporates folding trays to keep the footprint small. The printer measures 18.5 inches wide, 14.5 inches deep, and just under 7 inches tall with both front and rear trays folded. It also weighs slightly more than average at 20.1 pounds due to the rear-mounted ADF and the six internal ink tanks, but it should still be relatively easy for anyone to transport around the home or office. The far left side of the printer houses the only hard button for power. Touch-sensitive virtual buttons for copy, scan, and print controls light up the top-mounted interactive panel when you initially hit the hard power button, but the printer only illuminates the commands necessary for each function once you select a print mode.

Canon Pixma MG6220 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-in-One

The Canon Pixma MG6220 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-in-One ($199.99 direct), is unabashedly a home-oriented inkjet MFP. As with almost any inkjet printer, it can serve dual duty for home and home office, but the focus is on photos. The front panel offers both Photo Copy and Advanced Photo copy options along with a standard Copy command, and there's also an option to print photos directly from the Web, with choices for Canon Image Gateway and Picasa Web Albums. Most important of all, both its speed and output quality are more impressive for photos than for business documents, which definitively makes the printer of most interest for home use. The focus on home use puts the MG6220 in the same general category as the Editors' Choice Kodak ESP C310 ($99.99 direct, 4 stars), the difference being that the C310 is at the low end of the category in price, and the MG6220 is much closer to the high end. In addition to the photo copy and Web-photo printing features, the higher price pays for such niceties as an Ethernet connector along with WiFi support, the ability to print on optical discs, and paper handling that includes automatic duplexing (printing on both sides of a page) and two 150-sheet paper trays.

Canon Pixma MG6220

If you're a fan of futuristic controls, you'll love the handsome Canon Pixma MG6220 color inkjet multifunction (print/scan/copy). The controls and LCD screen are embedded into the scanner lid, and you'll feel like you're operating the transporter in Star Trek the first time you use them. Beyond that, the Pixma MG6220 serves up high-quality printouts and decent scans, and it's fast for an inkjet MFP. However, you pay a lot for this model's good looks ($200 as of September 22, 2011), and its ink costs are a tad high as well. Setting up the MG6220, whether through USB, ethernet, or Wi-Fi, is easy. Canon has updated the look of the installation-routine dialog boxes, though they still aren't as professional in appearance as Kodak's. Fortunately, the software bundle that handles scanning, OCR, and other chores is as efficient and capable as any of the competition’s. Yes, the MG6220's control panel, which debuted last year on the pricier Canon Pixma MG8120, looks futuristic. And yes, it has undeniable "wow" appeal. But we have the same complaint about it now as we did before: It isn't as efficient as it could be.
