Reviews: Multifunction Printers

The Brother MFC-J615W is a colour inkjet, 4-in-1, which prints, copies, scans and faxes, designed for small companies. 40 MB of memory mean small groups of up to 7 people can share it. It promises simplicity of use and a full range of features. Though it does it all, the MFC-J615W remains nevertheless compact and light (8Kg). Space can easily be found for it on top of a desk. Thanks to the wi-fi and network connectivity, you can share it across a work group. The 8.2 cm colour screen offers good legibility and, as long as you're not particularly attached to touch functionality, the buttons are pretty clear and easy to use. Another practical point, the media card reader and PictBridge port allow you to print without turning the computer on. On the down side, there's no double-sided feature. Generally speaking, the machine doesn't look all that robust and the document loader is low capacity (100 pages). Inserting pages into the loader isn't always that easy: compactness doesn't necessarily equate to practicality! Speeds We're a long way from the print speeds announced by Brother: 28 pages per minute for colour and 35 ppm black & white.

Brother MFC-J615w

The Brother MFC-J615w ($129 direct) offers a good feature set for a moderately priced multifunction printer (MFP). Fax capabilities and an ADF give it some home-office chops, while it has photo-centric features that give it some appeal as a home printer. It brings more to the table than the Brother MFC-J410w ($100 street, 3.5 stars), adding a larger LCD preview screen, photo-paper tray, Ethernet connectivity, USB port, and a longer warranty. Its speed is adequate, as is its text quality, but it falls a bit short on graphics and photo quality. It can print, copy, scan, and fax. It can print from or scan to media cards or a USB key, and scan to e-mail. It can fax either from its keypad or from a computer (PC Fax). The MFC-J615w has a matte-black finish and is reasonably compact, measuring 7.1 by 15.4 by 14.8 inches (HWD) and weighing 17.6 pounds. Its 15-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) lets you copy, scan, or fax multi-page documents. It has a 3.3-inch widescreen color LCD - the Brother MFC-J410w's is only 1.9 inches. It has a 100-sheet paper tray, a little scanty for home-office use, but it adds a 20-sheet tray for holding 4-by-6 photo paper.
