Multifunction Inkjet Printer Reviews

The MFC-J430W is the new entry-level product in the range of 4-in-1 multifunction printers that Brother launched in 2011. With fax and Wi-Fi, the MFC-J430W is geared toward small businesses looking for an inexpensive printer/scanner that won't require them to spend a fortune on ink. The 40 MB of standard memory allow for easy sharing within a group of 10 employees. The MFC-J430W is ultra-compact (40.5 x 37.8 x 18 cm, 9 kg). Sober and elegant, it easily blends into an office setting. The paper tray can house up to 100 standard sheets or 20 sheets of photo paper. This isn't the most practical or intuitive paper tray in the world, but it's nothing you can't get a hang of with a little practice... The paper got stuck a few times while we were testing the machine, in particular with sheets of 80 g/m² eco-labelled A4. Regular old office paper, however, poses less of a problem. If you're printing on photo paper, make sure you insert several sheets of A4, otherwise the printer won't detect the pages. The buttons may look clear and well positioned at first, but once you start using them you realise it's not as intuitive as you thought, especially when it comes to the settings.

Brother MFC-J430W review

There are plenty of models to choose from in Brother's range of all-in-one printers, but the MFC-J430W is among the cheapest, as you can pick it up online for under a hundred notes. Despite this, it still offers a wealth of features including a handy automatic document feeder and on-board Wi-Fi. It's available to buy for around £90. The MFC-J430W offers printing, scanning, faxing and copying features. Like all of Brother's multi-function models, it has a short and squat design with rounded edges to soften its appearance. Brother's higher-end models have glossy finishes, but this one sports a cheaper matte look, which is understandable given its modest price tag. It also makes do with a smaller 4.9cm screen. As it lacks a memory card reader or host USB port, the display isn't going to be used for selecting photos to print, so its smaller size isn't that much of an issue. The control panel is neatly laid out with large buttons for selecting the fax, scan and copying features. It's also reasonably easy to find your way around the menus, although they look overly busy at times. The slot-in, cassette-style paper tray at the bottom of the chassis holds up to 100 sheets of A4 paper. As there's no separate photo paper compartment, you have to remove these sheets when you want to print photos, which is a tad inconvenient.

Brother MFC-J430w

Unlike most $100 inkjet multi-function printers (MFPs), the Brother MFC-J430w ($100 street)—also available through some sources as the MFC-J425w—leans much more toward being office-centric rather than being a home printer. Given the price, that's a little surprising, but if you're looking for an inexpensive printer for your small or home office, it's a pleasant surprise indeed. More than that, the mix of office-centric features and overall capability is more than enough to make the printer an Editors' Choice. The office-centric design doesn't mean that you can't use the MFC-J430w for home printing also. Like most inexpensive inkjets today, it can serve a dual role as both home and home office printer. It's just that unlike most printers at this price, including the Editors' Choice Kodak ESP C310 All In One Printer ($99.99 direct, 4 stars) for example, the focus in this case is on the office side of that dual role. The MFC-J430w prints from, scans to, and faxes from a PC, and it works as a standalone copier and fax machine. It also offers a 20-page automatic document feeder (ADF) to supplement the letter-size flatbed, so you can scan multipage documents and legal-size paper. What you won't find are photocentric features, like memory card slots or PictBridge support for printing from cameras.
