This 4-in-1 figures among the biggest tested here. This is because it's mainly targeted at very busy offices, companies looking for a rapid machine that can do everything they want it to do, with fast printing and low cost per page. Its 256 MB memory ensures easy sharing within an office environment. Robust is the first word that comes to mind here. More of a mother (49 x 52 x 53 cm and 30 Kg) than a brother?! Nevertheless, the touchscreen (12.6 cm colour) gives it a nicely pared down and comfortable look. Inside you'll find four large cartridges (black, yellow, magenta, cyan) and you can print, copy, scan and fax to your heart's content, using the double-sided feature if need be. It has a 250 page paper loader as standard (additional paper loader on option), supports PCL6 (66 vector fonts, 12 bitmap fonts, 13 barcodes) and BR-Script3, and can easily be shared on an Ethernet or wi-fi network as alternatives to a USB cable. Compatible with Mac, Linux and Windows operating systems, we can say without hesitation, this machine covers all the bases. Using this Brother is very intuitive. To the left of the screen, there are 20 buttons for direct access to 40 previously recorded numbers.

Brother MFC-9970CDW

The Brother MFC-9970CDW color laser multifunction printer tackles the full laundry list of small-office and workgroup print/copy/scan/fax needs, outdoing every competitor in its price range ($700 as of July 18, 2011) and offering cheap toner to boot. The only thing wrong with this picture is, well, the picture: Its photo quality is middling, and its color scans can be overly dark. Detailed paper-installation instructions make setup easy; the included CD walks you through the process with sufficient hand-holding. You can find the documentation in PDF form on the CD, although Brother encourages you to look at the latest version online. In addition to USB and ethernet connections, the MFC-9970CDW has Wi-Fi, still a rarity among color laser MFPs. The legal-size scanner is a high-end touch on a machine that's already well equipped. Paper handling includes both a 250-sheet main input tray and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray. An optional 500-sheet input tray costs $250 from Brother, but I found lower prices online. The MFC-9970CDW prints and scans in duplex (two-sided), the latter via the 35-sheet automatic document feeder.
