Multifunction Laser Printer Reviews

The MFC-7860DW is an all-in-one monochrome laser printer for businesses that produce volumes of 250 to 2,000 pages per month and are looking for a product with additional features (copier, scanner, fax). With Ethernet, Wi-Fi and double-sided printing, Brother is promising compactness, speed and high printing quality. But does it live up to the company's promises? The dimensions and weight (40.5 x 39.8 x 31.6 cm, 11.6 kg) effectively put this printer in the category of compact all-in-ones. That makes it convenient for companies trying to save on space. It can easily fit on a small office desk. The 32 MB of RAM and Ethernet and Wi-Fi connections allow for easy sharing within a group of 20 employees. Particularly appreciated are the double-sided printing feature, compatibility with all systems (Mac, Windows, Linux) and clearly organised buttons. Located on the front of the machine, the toner is as accessible as they come. We prefer a touchscreen, however, because it can make a device less cluttered and just as intuitive, if not more so. As a comparison, take a look at the Lexmark X464DE (keeping in mind that it's twice the price). The screen on the MFC-7860DW is awfully small and the plastic finishing isn't particularly reassuring.

Brother MFC-7860DW review

The Brother MFC-7860DW is a monochrome laser printer that doubles up as a scanner, copier and fax machine. Priced at around £280, however, it's relatively expensive compared to rivals like the HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf. Is it worth the extra moolah?This printer's footprint is relatively small, but it expands towards the top to accommodate the flat-bed scanner. Finished mainly in matte black, it's no great beauty, but multi-function printers never are. At least it's not totally offensive in terms of its appearance. The control panel is mounted on a sloping edge at the front and includes a small two-line monochrome display, along with dedicated buttons for the fax, scan and copy functions. There's also a keypad for dialling fax numbers, a four-way cursor pad, and eight quick-dial buttons for storing frequently used fax numbers. The display is quite small, but the printer's menus are reasonably easy to find your way around, helped by the fact that the menu structure doesn't actually run that deep. When it comes to setting it up, this model really couldn't be more straightforward. You simply remove a few protective strips, take out the toner cartridge, give it a shake to make sure the toner is evenly distributed, and then load up the drivers on your PC.

Brother MFC-7860DW

Similar in most ways to the less expensive Brother MFC-7360n ($200 street, 3.5 stars) that I recently reviewed, the Brother MFC-7860DW ($300 street) adds a slightly faster engine, WiFi, and a duplexer (for two-sided printing). The additions serve as more than enough justification for the higher price. More important, they make the MFC-7860DW just a little better fit as a shared printer in an office, which is to say it's a reasonable choice as a personal mono laser MFP, but its natural home is on a network in a micro office. The MFC-7860DW offers all of the basic MFP features most offices need, starting with printing, scanning, and faxing from a PC as well as working as a standalone copier and fax machine. It also offers a 35-page ADF along with a flatbed, which lets it handle multipage documents and legal-size pages. Paper handling features include a 250-sheet tray, the duplexer, and a one-sheet manual feed, so you can print on a different kind of paper without having to swap out the paper in the tray. This should be more than enough for most small offices or for personal use. If you need higher capacity, however, there are no options available.
