Brother HL-4570CDW review

The Brother HL-4570CDW is the next model up from the HL-4150CDN. The primary differences are that this model offers faster print speeds and the added convenience of Wi-Fi support. However, it's a good deal more expensive as it costs around £520 online, which is around £200 more than its sibling. In terms of design there's little to separate the HL-4570CDW from the HL-4150CDN, as they share the same chassis shape and colour scheme. However, as we quite like the cuboid design and mixture of the dark grey used on the main body of the machine and contrasting white side panels, this is no bad thing. The control panel sits to the left of the paper out-tray at the top and has a pretty basic two-line display. There are also a limited number of buttons with just seven in total, including the Cancel and Go buttons. Nevertheless, the clean menu design means that it's still pretty quick to get at any settings you need to tweak. We also like the fact that it has a secure printing mode. You can sending print jobs to it with a security code added, so the print will simply store the document in memory until someone presses the Secure button on the control panel and enters the correct code.

Brother HL-4570CDW

A close cousin to the Brother HL-4150CDN ($400 street, 3 stars) that I reviewed earlier this year, the Brother HL-4570CDW ($500 street) offers faster speed and a wireless connection to justify the higher price. Beyond those differences, however, it's a near twin, with speed, quality, and paper handling that make it a good fit for anything from heavy-duty printing in a home office to moderately heavy-duty printing in a small office or workgroup. At 12.3 by 16.1 by 19.1 inches (HWD), the printer is suitably compact for a small office, and even small enough to share a desk with. Note that it weighs 46.3 pounds, however, which you may not consider light enough to move into place without some help. Setup is standard fare otherwise. Paper handling is a strong point, with a 250-sheet drawer, a 50-sheet multipurpose tray, and built-in duplexer (for two-sided printing) standard. This should be enough for most small offices, but if you need more input capacity, you can add a 500-sheet tray ($250 list) for a total 800-sheet capacity. Print speed is another strong point. I tested the HL-4570CDW using a wired network connection and running the tests from a Windows Vista system.

The Brother HL-4570CDW laser printer is a single function colour laser designed for the pro world. It promises high quality prints at low cost. Aesthetically, this printer resembles a big cube! Described as being ideal for a busy office, it offers networked printing, wi-fi and double-sided. Whatever your religion (Mac, Windows, Linux), you'll find the necessary drivers available. Compatibility with PCL6 (Printer Command Language) enables file compression. The 128 MB memory should be enough for a work group of up to twenty people or so. A single function printer, it can't do copies, scan or fax. Although it takes a while to wake up and this means it loses a rating star (see inset), once up and running it offers rapid printing. The tech spec claims 28 pages per minute (ppm) and with our test documents we measured it at 30 ppm across the three modes (colour, draft, black & white). Double-sided speeds will be half this (15 ppm). On our colour graph, the print lines are slightly visible in single tone areas and, although the graph is perfectly legible, fussy users will want a bit more precision (characters).

Brother HL-4570CDW

In most respects the Brother HL-4570CDW color laser printer is a good value. Its $500 price tag (as of December 16, 2010) is budget-friendly for small and medium-size workgroups, as are its reasonable toner costs. Its speed and features are competitive with those of the pricier Dell 3130cn. Where the HL-4570CDW falls a little short is in photo quality; it's best suited for mainstream business graphics as a result. The Oki C330dn costs less but is slower, has even dicier color quality, and charges more for its toner. As mentioned, the HL-4570CDW's speed is exemplary for its class. Plain-text pages printed on plain paper emerged at 16 pages per minute on the PC and 16.4 ppm on the Mac. Snapshot-size color photos printed on the PC took 4.2 ppm on plain paper and 2.6 ppm at finer settings on glossy paper. On the Mac, color PDF pages flew out at 9.6 ppm, while our 22MB, full-page color photo printed at 1.6 ppm. The text output of the HL-4570CDW is superb, appearing sharp and deep black, with nary a jaggy or other defect. Color graphics and photos printed on plain paper look slightly dull and exhibit distracting moiré (background patterning).
