Single-Function Laser Printer Reviews

The Brother HL-2240 is a compact black & white laser printer designed for small companies with print requirements of up to 2000 pages a month. It promises rapid prints, responsiveness, optimal quality and low per page costs. Does it deliver? This model’s hardware rating is penalised by the fact that it has reduced functionality and connectivity. However, if you’re happy with just a black & white printer that doesn’t include fax, copier or scanner, won’t print in colour and doesn’t do wi-fi or duplex or come with a screen, this model will suit you just fine. Compact (36.8 x 36 x 18.3 cm for 6.7 Kg), it will easily find a place on any desktop. Paper capacity is a standard 250 pages and the loader can also hold labels and envelopes. All operating systems are supported (Mac, Linux, Windows). There’s just a single command on the top to allow you to restart prints in the case of error. It’s a shame that there's no button to stop prints started by mistake. Another version of the same printer is available with duplex mode, the HL-2240D. Its speeds are better than on other single-function laser printers we've tested. The Canon i-SENSYS LBP6000 for example, gives speeds of 19 pages per minute (ppm), the Samsung ML-1670 prints at 16 ppm.

Brother HL-2240 review

Multi-function printers may offer loads of features, but they tend to be quite large, and not everyone needs extras like fax support. If your printing needs don't stretch beyond needing to print black and white text and graphics, then the entry-level HL-2240 might fit the bill. It's a small and compact monochrome laser printer that's priced at a very reasonable £80. Like other entry-level models in the Brother range, the HL-2240 is very small and square. It measures just 368 by 183 by 360mm. Design-wise, it's an ideal choice for those with home offices that are short on space, and the black and grey colour scheme looks quite professional.Unlike most laser printers that we see, this one doesn't have an LCD display and so there are no menus to navigate. Instead, it has three LEDs to indicate toner, drum and general errors, along with a green LED to show when it's ready to print. There's a large green button marked 'go' sitting beneath these LEDs, but its sole function seems to be to instruct the printer to produce a test page when it's pressed. Despite its small size, this model still manages to house a pull-out paper tray at the bottom that holds up to 250 sheets of paper. Sitting above this, behind a pull-down flap, there's a single-sheet paper feeder than can be used to feed envelopes and other odd-sized pieces of paper into the printer.

Brother HL-2240

Whatever size office you work in, if you need a personal monochrome laser printer, don't overlook the Brother HL-2240 ($120 street). In addition to being the right - which is to say, low - price, it's fast; it offers reasonably high quality output across the board for a mono laser; and it takes up less desktop space than most inkjets. The combination is enough to make it an Editors' Choice. The HL-2240 is the low end model of the Brother printer series whose last generation included the Editors' Choice HL-2170W ($150 street, 4 stars) that I reviewed about two years ago and is still available at this writing. Other printers in the series add duplexing, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi, but the HL-2240 sticks to the basics. There's no duplexer available, even as an option, and it connects only by USB cable, which is what makes it a decidedly personal printer. Very much on the plus side, staying with the basics helps keep the price down, and there's certainly no point in paying for features you don't need. Also helping to make the HL-2240 a good fit as a personal printer is the small size. At 7.2 by 14.5 by 14.2 inches (HWD) you should have no problem finding space for it, and at 14.8 pounds, it's easy for one person to move as needed. Setup is standard fare.
