Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Digital Cinema Review
The Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Digital Cinema throws sound well beyond its tiny size, and looks good doing it.We had fun playing around with Boston Acoustics' SoundWare XS SE speaker system last November. Even though it fell a little short on midrange presence (as expected from such a small speaker) and couldn't quite cough up the deepest bass , it's micro-sized, dual-driver satellite speakers sounded clean and looked appealing while the system's inclusion of mounting hardware only served to add to its value.As fun as the system was, we kept getting this feeling during our evaluation that Boston Acoustics was leaving a few stones of opportunity unturned. Here we had these excellent sounding satellite speakers — with a shape and size that allowed it to become all but invisible in the room — yet it was designed to be integrated into a bulky, traditional home theater system involving an A/V receiver, lots of wires and cables and some setup hassle to go with it. At the time, it seemed to us that a smaller system would be a better use of the company's design chops and, if done right, could turn out to be a real sound-bar killer.

Review: The Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS SE cube speaker system looks sharp at an affordable price point, but the micro size leaves midrange lacking.Audiophiles everywhere love to hate Bose for introducing the “cube speaker.” Once Bose got it into the heads of consumers that flashy sounding audio could be had from 3-inch cubes mated with a subwoofer, a new product category was born. The trouble, according to audio purists, is that these speakers simply aren’t musical. Often, the sound they make is likened to the noise that comes from a sheet of tin foil. Yet consumers clearly find the compact, out-of-the-way size of the speakers compelling enough, apparently, to forego high-end sound quality in favor of aesthetics. So, although initially reluctant to jump on board, quality speaker makers eventually recognized the opportunity, acquiesced and began designing their own cube speaker systems to sound as musical as possible.You’d think there’s only so much that can be done with a 2-inch speaker crammed into an enclosure barely larger than the speaker itself.
Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS 2.1 Review
With all the focus on surround-sound home-theater systems these days, good ol’ fashioned stereo is all too often forgotten. Boston Acoustics aims to refocus your attention with the compact, affordable, and innovative SoundWare XS 2.1. The system consists of a pair of very small, cube-shaped passive satellites and a compact powered subwoofer. The satellites, which measure about 4.5 inches on each side and weigh just one pound each, are magnetically shielded and can rest on a shelf or tabletop or be mounted on the wall—even in the corners of your ceiling. An included set of articulated brackets enable you to direct the satellites’ output in almost any direction. When mounted on a flat wall, the speakers can be tilted up or down on a 40-degree arc or pivoted 20 degrees left or right. Despite their diminutive nature, the satellites are true two-way speakers, with .5-inch dome tweeters and 2.5-inch mid-ranges. They present eight ohms of impedance to the amp, and can handle anywhere from 10 to 100 watts of power. The system is available in your choice of a black or white finish, but either can be painted to disappear into your room’s décor.
