Asus VG236 review

This is the future right now and it's not even 1983. There's no red/green outlines here, no the Asus VG236 23-inch LCD monitor represents 3D in all it's active-shutter glasses, Nvidia 3D Vision trim. Okay, 'future' might be pushing it a bit considering Nvidia has had stereoscopic drivers for years, and the test app is still the same spinning eye logo that's been in the driver set since the beginning. But still, you may have noted a certain effusive tone in my opening gambit that was entirely lacking from our previous looks at the world of 3D. And that's because we are finally seeing things coming together in a more coherent way, more so in fact than the supposedly burgeoning 3D cinematic experience. Partly that's down to smart, well-made displays such as the VG236 coming on the scene for a more reasonable price, but mostly because the drivers, and the way the hardware and software work together, is maturing. Discounting the 3D gubbins for a second, the VG236 is a great little monitor. It's sharp, clear, offers fantastic definition on colours and boasts an impressive viewing angle. Especially for a TN panel. The best part about it though is intrinsically linked to its 3D raison d'etre, namely that 120Hz refresh rate.

Asus VG236H 120Hz Display

Before you scream, “Who in their right mind would pay $500 for a 23-inch twisted-nematic panel?!” know that this is a 120Hz monitor, and that Asus is putting Nvidia’s 3D Vision kit—a $200 product—inside the box. If you’re excited about 3D gaming and Blu-ray 3D movies (and have the appropriate videocard, playback software, and games), $500 is a compelling value. Oh, and the monitor’s pretty good, too. Let’s discuss the aspects that temper our enthusiasm first, because this monitor isn’t for folks with critical applications such as photo and video editing. In fact, some of you probably stopped reading at “twisted-nematic.” Asus hasn’t magically avoided all the problems we associate with TN panels—e.g., limited color gamut, backlight leakage, inability to distinguish between the lightest shades of gray and full-on white—but it has done a great job mitigating those problems. Before we sat down for a gaming session, we used DisplayMate Multimedia with Test Photos (www.displaymate.com) to evaluate the VG236H’s productivity prowess. This being a 6-bit panel, it relies on frame-rate control to cycle between different shades during screen refreshes to simulate intermediate colors it can’t produce natively.

Asus VG236H 120Hz 3D Vision LCD Monitor Review

There is a big push for various 3D technologies in the current market. Whether you're a fan or foe, the industry is pushing forward with 3D at a torrid pace. Recently, we had a chance to test 3D Vision Surround from NVIDIA and came away impressed by the experience. It was only a matter of time before we got our hands on more hardware featuring the technology though and Asus stepped up to the plate without missing a beat. Today, we're checking out the latest 3D capable monitor to hit the market, the Asus VG236H. The VG236H display from Asus is a 23" widescreen panel that features a 120Hz refresh rate, 1920 x 1080 resolution, and an NVIDIA 3D Vision kit to get you on the road to stereoscopic 3D bliss. 23" monitors are currently the sweet spot for displays, so it makes sense for companies to introduce new products at this specific size. Monitor Reviews: 23'', 24'', 25'', 26'', 27'' and 28'' LCD Displays

Remember that 120 Hz monitors like this are more responsive, but also allow you to dive into the world of 3D using a 3D Vision kit and a recent Nvidia graphics card. It seems that Asus has learnt some lessons from its competitors' mistakes, and the hardware here is a little more user-friendly than on some other 120 Hz monitors we've tested. While the , currently the 120 Hz screen that the others need to beat has VGA, DVI and HDMI, Asus has chosen DVI and HDMI, but with a height-adjustable, rotating stand. That makes it better on this front. Note that the VG236H has a glossy screen, so you'll need to be careful about where you put it, avoiding natural light sources that can provoke the reflections that this sort of finish suffers from. Colours: dreadful to start with, but much better later Look out: when you first switch it on, the VG236H's brightness is an aggressive, if not downright unpleasant, 300 cd/m². That's not the only problem either: the colour temperature is too high, the gamma curve to low, leaving a deltaE of 4.7. In practice, that means the colours aren't reproduced accurately and tend towards blue with shades of grey that are too light. In short, we suggest you avoid this monitor's default settings. Incredibly, though, you can reduce all of these problems by making two simple changes to the settings on the menu.
