Not all wireless routers are equal. Every wireless router can shuffle bits back and forth between the Internet, the local wired network, and the local wireless network. Some routers are faster than others, and that's to be expected. However, there is another class of wireless router that offers more than the standard feature set. The ASUS RT-N66U Dual-band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router is one such hot rod. Featuring among other things dual USB2 ports and 450 Mbps wireless transfers and the ability to create eight wireless networks, the RT-N66U is a great device for folks who want their always-on device to do more than just shuffle bits. The box is primary block with a picture of the router device itself on the front. There are also pseudo-logos for 450 Mbps wireless, USB ports, eight SSIDs, parental controls, and download tools. The requisite WiFi logo is also present, showing that the unit works with 802.11a/b/g/n devices. The back of the box shows the veritable cornucopia of features, from connectivity, to sharing, to ease of use, to security, to aesthetics, to even a shot of the motherboard inside the unit. The unit is of course well-packaged in its box.
The RT-N66U Dark Knight is Asus' first N900 router and is the feature-rich follow up to the highly popular and award-winning Asus RT-N56U. This update comes with increased WiFi speeds of up to 450Mbps on both the 5GHz and 2.4GHz transmissions concurrently (hence the N900 name). This makes it ideal for bandwidth hungry tasks like 3D HD video streaming and multiplayer gaming, while at the same time still enabling you to surf the web, download or share files. It's also jam-packed with features such as a built in VPN server, a firewall that you can customise, QoS and IPv6 support. It also comes with two USB ports and, in common with most routers that are USB enabled, the ports can be used to support external storage or printers, turning the RT-N66U into a storage or print server. It also supports up to six wireless networks, three over each band.Sadly though it wont make you breakfast in the morning. It's almost like Asus isn't really trying...Vital statsWiFi frequency - Dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHzPorts - 4x Gigabit ethernet, 2x USB 2.0Antenna - 3x detachableDimensions - 207 x 148.9 x 35.5mm We tested the wireless performance of the Asus RT-N66U at both its frequencies and at its highest (40MHz) and lowest bandwidth (20MHz) for each by transferring a very large, 3GB file from a notebook connected directly to the router to another notebook.
I've held off reviewing the Asus RT-N66U Dark Knight Double 450Mbps N Router until now due to some known bugs in earlier versions of its firmware. The latest, version 3.0.0.3.108, is still, well, a little buggy, but fortunately not seriously enough to keep the router from being an excellent networking device. Being the first N900 router from Asus, the RT-N66U offers stellar performance on the 5GHz band and a vast number of features. The router also has great wireless range and was very stable in my testing. With two USB ports it has more to offer than other USB-enabled routers, and it was very fast when coupled with a storage device. The RT-N66U isn't perfect, however. Performance on the 2.4GHz band was slower than I expected, and the router's USB ports lack support for the latest USB 3.0 standard. Nonetheless, if you're looking for a top-notch router for your home or even a small office, the RT-N66U is one of the best on the market, especially considering that its street price is lower than that of the Linksys E4200v2 from Cisco. The RT-N66U looks similar to its predecessor, the RT-N56U, with a sleek casing that more resembles a jewelry box than a networking device.
