Asus rt-n16 gigabit superspeed-n router

Today's home network consists of a lot more than just two computers sharing files. Nowadays, family members each have their own computer and there might even be a HTPC in the living room that everyone shares. In addition to that, chances are good there's at least one internet-connected gaming system in the house, and it's not uncommon to have two or three. Top it all off with printers, iPhones, tablets and other portable media players and that's a lot of technology that shares the same Internet connection. A good router is essential in keeping a home network running smoothly. Users want to be able to share files, stream media, play online games and connect wireless devices to the Internet all with speed and reliability. So when Asus sent me their RT-N16U router to review, I decided to test it not just with computers, but with gaming consoles and a smartphone as well. It features gigabit LAN and wireless-N speeds along with USB disk and printer sharing, among other things. Last year I reviewed their RT-N13U router and had great results so I have high hopes for this more robust offering. Turn the page and come along with me as I put this router to the test.

Asus RT-N16

Like motherboards, the hardware Asus is known for making, you can use many different third-party router operating systems (aka firmware) on the RT-N16. Equipped with an overclockable 480Mhz CPU and 128MB of RAM, the router performed great in our trials when it was running DD-WRT, one of the most well-known Linux-based open-source router firmware options. When using Asus' stock firmware, the RT-N16 was buggy and didn't pass our wireless signal stress test; however, it had decent throughput performance. If you don't mind using third-party firmware, the $100 RT-N16 is a great choice as it potentially offers a lot more features than other routers in the same price range. On the other hand, people who simply want to create a reliable wireless network for their home or office without too much tinkering should look for a more stable single-band Wireless-N Gigabit router. The Asus RT-N16 has a traditional square router design with three removable antennae sticking up from the back. The router is about 30 percent larger than that of most similarly configured routers. The back of the router has five Gigabit Ethernet ports--four for LAN connections and one WAN port to connect to a broadband Internet modem.

Asus RT-N16 Review

Asus’ RT-N16 wireless router boasts a raft of advanced features, including USB storage and printer sharing, an integrated ftp server, and Quality of Service (QoS) settings for prioritizing your network’s traffic flow. And unlike with most routers, you don’t need to be a networking geek to make the most of all this: Asus has developed an excellent graphical user interface (GUI) that renders everything very easy for a novice (as long as you don’t mind fractured English translations). The RT-N16 is also incredibly fast, at least at close range; it’s much less impressive at a distance. However, this device also has a few shortcomings that temper our enthusiasm and hold us back from giving it a stronger recommendation. Click onward to find out more about its pros and cons. This is a single-band 802.11n router with a radio that operates on the 2.4GHz frequency band. That’s fairly typical for routers in this price range; unlike many of its competitors, though, the RT-N16 doesn’t offer the option of operating a guest wireless network. Having a guest network makes it easy to provide friends, family, and other visitors Internet access without opening the door to your entire network.
