ASUS O-Play HDP-R3 HD Media Player

One particular area that computers have grown by leaps and bounds, is in the HTPC (Home Theater Personal Computer) market. These last few years we have seen a plethora of new add-ons, or newer capabilities of specific computer components to accommodate this newer type of personal computing. HTPCs add that bit of flexibility we do not have with our standard DVD/Blue Ray movie players. It is no wonder this area of computing has literally exploded. A lot of times HTPCs are built using older components we have laying around the house, or we end up purchasing affordable computer components for this task only. But we still end up with a box, that is either way to large to be moved around the house, or that the HTPC is noisy because of the amount of fans we need to use to keep the HTPC cool. Computer manufacturers have come up with Media Players. These are basically a very simplified version of a HTPC. So it is only natural that these type of HTPCs have their limitations. Over the last year or so, I have played around with various Media Center boxes. And I found these players to be lacking; either it is with the sound, video quality, or the limited number of file formats that can be played on that Media Center.

Product Survey: Multimedia Hard Drives and Media Centres

The Asus media centre has been around for a while in its R1 version. For the O!Play Air HDP-R3, Asus has used the same recipe and filled in a few of the gaps in the first version: it includes Wi-Fi N, an SDHC card reader and some other additional features. The box is compact, in good quality plastic and nice on the eye. You can't insert a hard drive but have instead a multimedia gangway at your disposal. Playback of the various media is therefore actioned via a USB peripheral or the network, but we'll come to that later. It comes with a fairly large remote that is a bit too big for small hands. It's nice to use all the same. Note that one of the R1's faults has been corrected as you can now use it to adjust the volume. The graphics interface however hasn't changed at all. While it might have been just about ok in summer 2009, this is no longer the case. What we have here is the standard Realtek chip product interface. Asus has make no attempt to improve it or adapt it to HD screens. The interface is in SD and only allows you to display 6 lines! Not that great on a 42-inch TV! On top of the graphics limitations, there are no advanced interface features: you can't display photos as thumbnails or create a video jukebox (files for each film), nor can you display your music artwork... moving on.
