Sometimes, less is more, but not always. The AOC e2243FW ($149 list) is easily one of the thinnest monitors to make its way into the labs, but its feature set is even leaner. At just under $150 it's certainly affordable, but considering its relatively small 21.5-inch screen, AOC should have equipped it with an HDMI port, at the very least. It does a good job of displaying small text and delivers smooth video, but its grayscale performance could be better. The first thing you'll notice about the e2243FW is its extremely thin profile. At 0.50 inches thick it is the slimmest monitor to pass though our labs and is a hair thinner than the Asus ML248H ($209.99 list, 3.5 stars) (0.60 inches). The 21.5-inch TN+ panel has a maximum resolution of 1,920-by-1,080 and is housed in a glossy black cabinet. It sits atop a matching round base containing a very stiff tilt hinge, but lacks height, swivel, and pivot adjustability. However, the base can be folded back (90-degrees) should you choose to mount the monitor on a wall. You won't find any ports or buttons on the cabinet. Instead, the two video inputs (DVI and VGA) are built into the base. This model lacks an HDMI port, unfortunately, and it doesn't have any speakers or USB ports either.
AOC’s e2243Fw made a strong first impression on us: A glossy, piano-black frame houses this remarkably thin, 21.5-inch LCD monitor. In addition to being only 1/2-inch from front to back, it’s also extremely lightweight and flexible—and has a budget price, too. The entry-level price of $150 gets you TN technology and a WLED-backlit screen with a standard 16:9 aspect ratio and 1920x1080 resolution. It doesn’t, however, get you HDMI or DisplayPort. The six?pound display has a round base holding sensors that, when touched, activate an onscreen display—a neat trick if it weren’t so clunky. Attempting to navigate the menu was an unwieldy experience, as the buttons on the base are unintuitive and lack the ability to move up and down through the menu. Even worse, the OSD menu consists of large, confusing icons, and it’s frustratingly easy to press the wrong button or to accidentally take a step back to the previous submenu. One of the notable things about the display is its ability to tilt back to a 90-degree angle for easy wall mounting via VESA mounts. However, the e2243Fw requires a power brick—something that’s unlikely to look good dangling down your wall. Also, despite the 90-degree tilt, there is no ability to move the display from left to right, which comes in handy for desktop use.
It is not a pejorative to state that AOC knows how to make cheap monitors. In particular, the 22-inch AOC e2243Fw can be found for as low as $150, includes a fairly robust onscreen display (OSD), and performs well in movies and games. Sure, there's no HDMI and navigating the OSD can be a particularly apoplectic experience at times, but for $150, AOC offers a more than decent package. Also, we wish the warranty covered the backlight for more than a year, but that's not a major quibble. For half the price of the Samsung PX2370, the e2243Fw delivers a monitor that, though a step or two down in quality, is well worth its asking price. The 22-inch AOC e2243Fw looks like something out of "2001: A Space Odyssey," with its pale, white chassis, contrasted by a glossy black bezel, delivering a clean, sterile look. Continuing with that futuristic (or at least what was to be the future in 1968) motif, the foot stand is slightly dome-shaped, looking somewhat like a flying saucer and measures 9 inches wide with a depth of 7.5 inches. The bezel measures 0.75 inch wide on the right and left sides, and the full depth of the panel is an incredibly thin 0.5 inch. The monitor's full width measures 20.3 inches. The distance from the bottom of the bezel to the desktop is a short 3.2 inches, and the panel tilts back a full 90 degrees to face directly up.
