There aren't many good quality portable headphones out there. To start with, producing a decent pair of headphones is no easy matter, but if you need to make them compact, solid, lightweight and offer a decent amount of isolation, then things are decidedly more complicated. That hasn't deterred AKG, which has tried to crack the nut with these K450 headphones. Although they're mostly made of plastic, the build quality and finish on the K450 headphones is excellent. We're sure that the solid, perfectly-adjusted components will ensure years of happy listening, as long as you're careful with the one area where AKG usually struggles, the joints on the earpads. They're very thin and you can easily bend them in two by applying just a little too much pressure. Fortunately, they move very easily and it will be quite hard to get them jammed. There's hardly an extravagant range of accessories, but all the basics are there, including two cables, the first of which measures half a metre, the second a whole metre. The former is more useful if you've got a phone or an MP3 player in a jacket pocket, or if you're using the mobile adaptor (see inset). You also get a semi-rigid case, which is bulky but really protects your headphones, as well as a mini-jack to jack adaptor.
