Acer S242HL 24-Inch LED LCD Monitor

On paper, the $229 Acer S242HL looks like a bargain. But it doesn't look quite as nice when it's connected to a computer. The problem isn't with its specs: This 24-inch, matte, LED-backlit display with 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution has DVI, HDMI, and VGA connectors. Its 250 cd/m2-rated brightness is lower than that of some high-end models, but matches about half the displays we've tested lately. And unsurprisingly, as with many inexpensive monitors, adjustability is limited to a few degrees of tilt. What really sinks the S242HL is the quality of its display. Our jury gave it the worst grades in our recent roundup of 23- and 24-inch monitors, assigning it Fair scores in color quality, screen uniformity, viewing-angle range, and motion. It earned a Good rating only in text legibility. Ultimately it's hard to recommend the Acer S242HL. If you are looking for a bargain-priced 24-inch display, you can certainly find less-expensive, better-performing alternatives, including the Asus VS247H-P and Samsung E2420L.

Like anything made of black plastic, the S242HL's body is very susceptible to picking up greasy fingerprints. You'll want to get a cloth out every time you touch it. But then again, given that all you can do is tip it back slightly, that won't be very often. The inputs are made up of the trio of VGA, DVI and HDMI, but Acer has unfortunately totally abandoned audio. The S242HL doesn't have speakers or a headphone jack, making it hard to pick up the audio that comes via the HDMI cable when you connect this monitor to a TV decoder or a games console. It seems that Acer has repeated the mistakes it made with both the and the : the new S422HL suffers from severe reverse ghosting. If you've never heard of this problem, it results from a failed attempt to artificially boost the responsiveness of a monitor. It means you can see ghost images trailing behind fast moving objects which stand out a lot from the original image because of their inverted colours. Fortunately, the reverse ghosting is almost impossible to spot when using office applications. If you really like the look of the S242HL, you can use it for writing e-mails and browsing the web. But if, on the other hand, you want to play games, there's no chance that fast moving objects will appear smooth.
