AC Ryan Playon!HD Mini 2 Review

A couple of years ago, the best "media player" solution was a DIY one; such as an HTPC. But then, one company released a simple $100 device that streamed content, and so did another. And then another, and another, and another. Yes, at this point, the market is chock-full of such devices, but despite that, none are "perfect". In fact, some are down-right unattractive. While most companies that develop media players don't do just one thing, AC Ryan is one of the exceptions. For most of the company's life, it produced a huge array of modding accessories, but in the past year or so, the company has been reinvented and is focusing 100% on its Playon! series of media players. Though AC Ryan's major focus is on these devices, the gen-1 mini I took a look at last fall didn't blow me off my feet. While the support it offered was top-rate, the interface, performance, and feature-set left a bit to be desired. AC Ryan wasn't oblivious to this fact, and as a result wanted to go the extra mile on its gen-2 series. We first started getting previews of these this past winter, while both the Playon!HD 2 and Playon!HD Mini 2 have been available for a couple of months. I've been testing out the latter for the past month.

AC Ryan PlayOn! HD2 Mini review

A trimmed-down version of the AC Ryan PlayOn! HD2 networked media player, the HD2 Mini is almost identical in terms of specs with one obvious exception: there's no internal hard drive. The HD2 Mini is a pure streaming device, which finds videos and music from local computers and NAS boxes via UPnP, network shares or from a selection of internet sources, and puts them on your TV.That means it's cheaper than the full PlayOn! HD2 and also smaller. Smaller than, say, an Xbox controller. And its glossy black lines are sleek and uninterrupted, save for a glowing logo on the front and a selection of connectors round the back. These include ethernet and HDMI, as well as surround RCA audio jacks, optical SPDIF and USB ports for attaching portable hard drives full of films or an optional Wi-Fi adaptor. It's silent, and the picture quality is good. If you've got a lot of videos on a networked drive, what's not to like? Just like the PlayOn! HD2, our biggest complaint with the HD2 Mini is the lack of polish that's gone into the interface. It's even worse here, though, since the main menu has lots of redundant options carried over from its bigger brother.

Reviews: Media Centres

Second in the 2011 range of AC Ryan media centres, the Playon!HD mini2 targets the networked streamer segment. There's nowhere to put a hard drive then, with the accent on social networking and Ethernet Gigabit. AC Ryan has however still been able to use the know-how built up previously, with strong multimedia compatibility and access to a multimedia jukebox, reworked for this new model. This casing is taken straight from the HD2 with an entirely glossy surface. It certainly attracts your attention but is also a magnet for dust and finger marks. The remote is a development on the first generation mini and is slimmer but isn't of much better quality. The buttons aren't very convincing, you often have to press firmly for the command to be registered. Energy consumption is particularly well managed with hardly 5 watts during playback and 0.1 watts in standby. The navigation interface is identical to the one used on the AC Ryan Essential. It's an improvement on the old one, with good use of the full-HD screen display area. The only fault is that it isn't always the fastest. Each action takes time, less than on the Essential, sure, but still noticeable.
