ZTE Warp Review

As the prepaid market continues to gain steam, more manufacturers will be flocking to them bearing some high-end, yet respectable smartphones worth drooling over. Already, ZTE has established itself in the entry-level segment of the market, but with the ZTE Warp for Boost Mobile, they intend on making a splash with something a bit grander to captivate those who don't want to be tied down with a contract.Well, it's no beauty per se, but the ZTE Warp's design is credible enough to make it seem like a quality constructed device – as opposed to being a cheap thing like most of ZTE's offerings. Flaunting an all too conventional design, we take comfort in knowing that it's extremely lightweight and form fitting in the hand.Size Visualization ToolThankfully, its shutter key, volume control, and dedicated power button are all raised to offer enough distinction for our fingers – while exhibiting clicky responses. In addition, we also find other items such as its 3.5mm headset jack, microphone, and microUSB port .Flipping it over, it's donning a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash, with the ability to shoot VGA videos. Lastly, removing the soft touch rear cover provides access to its 1,600 mAh battery and microSD card slot, which is preloaded with a 2GB card.

ZTE Warp

It used to be that prepaid, no-contract carriers offered weak feature phones cleverly pitched to resemble their more capable smartphone cousins on traditional networks. The market has changed, however, and the Android invasion has spilled over into this uncharted territory. ZTE's $199 Warp is a sign of that shift, offering the full power of Android with enough speed to handle it. When I first laid eyes on the ZTE Warp, I wasn't too impressed. Perhaps it was the theft-proof bubble packaging I had to tear open, or the Warp's nondescript black slab shape. What's more, it reminded me of my aging HTC HD2---only molded from plastic rather than metal. Measuring 5 inches tall by 2.7 inches wide by 0.5 inch thick, it won't win any awards for being compact, but the 5.3-ounce phone has some reassuring heft and feels solid in the hand. The back of the phone has a pleasant rippled texture that makes it easy to grip and resists fingerprints. Most of the ZTE Warp's front consists of its 4.3-inch (800x480-pixel-resolution) LCD screen. While nowhere near as bright or high-contrast as the AMOLED or Super LCD displays that grace modern handsets, the Warp's screen pumps out an acceptable amount of light.

ZTE Warp

With the Galaxy Prevail ($149.99, 4 stars), Samsung brought a really solid Android smartphone over to Boost Mobile. The Samsung Transform Ultra ($229.99, 4 stars) improved upon the Prevail and added a nice, physical QWERTY keyboard. Now ZTE is throwing its hat in the ring with the $199.99 ZTE Warp. It brings a large, 4.3-inch display to Boost's low-cost lineup, but it doesn't have quite the level of build quality we loved about those Samsung phones. Design and Call Quality The ZTE Warp measures 5.1 by 2.7 by .5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.9 ounces. The back is made of textured, soft-touch black plastic that looks like a fingerprint. There are silver plastic buttons on the right and left sides of the phone, and the small bit of detail on the front is all shiny black plastic. The 4.3-inch glass capacitive touch LCD has 480-by-800-pixel resolution, and it looks good when you turn the brightness level up a few notches. Unfortunately, it looks like the LCD is set further back than we see in most devices, which makes the screen much more reflective and smudge-prone than normal.
