With an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and an almost entirely stock Android 4.0 ROM, the Grand X is ZTE's new flagship device. It's something of a milestone for the Chinese manufacturer, previously known for producing bottom-dollar semi-smartphones and white-label, carrier-branded devices such as Orange's San Francisco, and was unveiled with appropriate fanfare at two separate London events earlier this month. Flying ZTE's three-letter flag proudly, it's the company's first real attempt to make its name as a viable, mid-range Android OEM in its own right, capable of going toe-to-toe with devices from Asian competitors such as Samsung and HTC as well as major domestic rival Huawei. Does the Grand X provide anything more interesting than what's already available, and can it help ZTE make a small but significant dent in the UK market? Fairly or not, the first issue in most users' minds when encountering a Chinese smartphone will be build quality — sadly, the Grand X does little to dispel the stigma. While the overall design is relatively sleek, resembling the Nexus S in its preference for slimness and rounded corners, most of the materials used to execute it are noticeably cheap and plasticky.
Budget smartphones have come a long way – and here to prove it is the ZTE Grand X from ZTE, which squeezes a dual-core 1Ghz processor into a handset costing less than 200 quid. AND it runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich – which hasn't even found its way onto some of the higher-end phones yet. On the back of the phone, you'll see the lens of the five-megapixel snapper sticking out a bit. There's also a front-facing 0.3 megapixel model for making video calls. Under the bonnet lurks an Nvidia Tegra 1GHz 2 dual-core processor, along with 512MB of RAM and on-board memory of 4GB, which can be expanded via the microSD slot. At first glance, there's little that makes the Grand X stand out from the crowd. It's your average black slate handset, with rounded edges, a plastic chassis, and a 4.3inch display. The glass on the front is a fingerprint magnet, while the back has an interesting texture. It feels solid to hold, but is not weighty. On the front of the handset there is a quartet of touch-sensitive buttons for Back, Home, Menu, and a universal search in any screen.
