ViewSonic ViewPad 10pro

ViewSonic has been in the tablet game for a long time, but its recent efforts have gotten mixed results. The ViewSonic ViewPad 10pro ($599.99 direct) is a business-oriented tablet aimed at vertical markets, where Windows functionality and IT compatibility take precedence. Along the way, it has tweaked and upgraded the tablet, shedding a few of the flaws that held back its predecessor, the ViewSonic ViewPad 10 ($729 list, 2 stars). The ViewPad 10pro keeps the same form-factor that's now so familiar in the tablet space, consisting of little more than a 10.1-inch capacitive touch screen, with ports and buttons along the edges of the bezel. An integrated light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen, making it brighter when ambient light levels drop. Its 1,024-by-600 resolution falls behind competitors, like the Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 ($849 list, 4 stars) (1,280-by-800) and Motion Computing CL900 ($1,125 list, 3.5 stars) (1,366-by-768). What the ViewPad 10pro does have, however, is a full-sized HDMI port, as opposed to the mini-HDMI port found on the Motion CL900. The HDMI port allows you to output 1080p video to an external display, whereas the mini-HDMI port will require you to purchase a mini-HDMI to HDMI port to connect it.

ViewSonic ViewPad 10pro Review

While tablets become evermore popular, many computer users are asking why they need one if they have a laptop - or should they ditch their faithful laptop for the new generation? So, for anyone in a quandary about what to choose, what could be better than a device that offers the best of both worlds? The ViewPad 10pro is navigated entirely using the touch display. On the right of the screen are four touch-sensitive buttons for return, home, search and settings. It feels quite heavy in the hand, weighing in at 870g and measuring 10.1 inches - however, bear in mind that it is hiding a 1.6Ghz Atom Z670 chip under the bonnet. A 1.3 megapixel webcam sits in the top middle of the device, while there are charge and power LEDs at the top, along with volume controls, and hold and power buttons. The charger, USB and HDMI ports sit on the left side, along with the microSD slot and 3.5mm audio jack. The big selling point of the ViewPad 10pro is that it runs on both Android 2.2 and Windows 7, so you can use Windows if you want to type up a document, and Android if you want to run a games app, for instance. It's pretty simple to move between operating systems.

The ViewSonic ViewPad 10Pro has a confusing name, operates much like a Microsoft Tablet PC from years ago and, while the concept of a "dual boot" tablet sounds appealing, it actually just runs Android 2.2 in Windows 7.However, the ViewPad 10Pro has a few interesting perks that could line up well with the needs of some users, especially those in a corporate setting. The most important one is battery life. The 10Pro lasts for over eight hours, which is twice as long as the first ViewPad model, the ViewPad 10s. That means, for mobile pros who need to run Windows apps and switch over to Android, the 10Pro will last all day.The 10Pro weighs a rather jaw-dropping 893.5g and is 14.73mm thin. For those keeping track, that's nearly twice as heavy as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and almost twice as thin.Still, this is a full Windows 7 tablet running the Intel Oak Trail platform – essentially an Atom Z670 processor that's fine-tuned for 1.5GHz performance and long battery life. With this chipset, you can install any operating system you want, including Ubuntu 11.04 with touch support.There's one USB port that works with just about anything you can think of: external disks, keyboards and mice, a USB hub or even other tablets you connect to swap out files.
