TomTom XXL 550-TM

While a 4.3-inch screen has become the standard size for personal navigation devices, the upgrade to a 5.0-inch screen can make a significant difference. TomTom has two series of XXL products with 5.0-inch screens, the XXL 540-TM and the XXL 550-TM reviewed here ($230, price as of 1/5/2011). At one time, such an upgrade carried a huge premium, but no more: Now the premium can be as little as $40. For those of you without the secret decoder ring, the "T" models include lifetime live traffic updates; the "M" models include lifetime map updates; and the "TM" models include both lifetime map updates and live traffic. The basic feature set of the XXL 550 series of products matches the features discussed in the previously reviewed XXL 540-S. All models include TomTom's IQRoutes technology, 7 million Points of Interest database, Text to Speech, and maps for the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. So what's the difference with the XXL 550-TM? First, you find a somewhat revamped and simplified user interface. The Options menu, previously called Preferences, now consists of only three screens of options.

TomTom XXL 550-TM

Technically speaking, the TomTom XXL 550-TM ($259.99 direct) is a very slight improvement over the prior XXL 540-S model. The XXL 550-TM features the same 5-inch LCD display, accurate routing performance, and clear voice prompts as before. The only real upgrade is EasyMenu, the company's lightly streamlined menu system first shown on the budget TomTom Ease. More significant is the $100 across-the-board price cut, to $199.99 for the base XXL 550 model and $259.99 for the XXL 550-TM, the subject of this review, the fully-loaded version that adds lifetime map and traffic updates. The competition has moved quite a bit in the past year, but the XXL 550-TM is still a worthy choice. Before we get started, let's clarify the XXL 550 pricing structure further. The TomTom XXL 550 actually comes in four flavors: with or without lifetime traffic updates (the "T" in the model name), and with or without lifetime map updates (the "M"). The base model costs $199.99. Add a T or an M and it costs $30 extra. Add both letters, and you'll $60 extra, for a total price of $259.99 for the 550-TM. Aside from the included services, all four versions are technically identical.
