T-Mobile's third-generation myTouch Q promises zippy 4G speeds and the convenience of a physical keyboard for a wallet-friendly $49.99. For that price, the myTouch Q comes loaded with a 1.4-GHz single-core processor and Google's older Android Gingerbread operating system. Is this slider a good deal?Click to EnlargeThe first thing you notice when you pick up the myTouch Q is its considerable heft. At 6.8 ounces, this slider is heavier than its keyboard-less sibling, the 4.9-ounce myTouch, as well as the first-generation myTouch Q by LG, which weighed 6.5 ounces. At 4.9 x 2.5 x 0.6 inches, Huawei's myTouch Q is far thicker than the standard myTouch (4.8 x 2.46 x 0.41 inches), but only slightly thicker than the LG DoublePlay slider (4.8 x 2.5 x 0.5 inches).Click to EnlargeThe myTouch Q's face features a 4-inch WVGA display surrounded by a glossy black bezel, which is nicely complimented by a gray chin piece and edges. Above the display is the myTouch logo, and above that a large stylized silver earpiece. To the right is the phone's 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera, a new addition to the myTouch Q line.
Android phones with honest-to-goodness real physical keyboards rarely cross my desk these days. That's why I jumped at the chance to give the new $49.99 T-Mobile MyTouch Q by Huawei a spin. This device is a follow-up to the first MyTouch Q made by LG but sports a bigger screen and faster processor. It may not be small, light, or slim, but for its low price this handset serves up basic Android, nimble 4G data, plus a usable keyboard in an attractive budget package. If you can live without a physical keyboard, T-Mobile also sells a version of the MyTouch, identical in every way but without a slider for the same price. Besides its recycled name, the T-Mobile MyTouch Q (Huawei) might also confuse you with its doppelganger looks. The handset is practically a mirror image of its predecessor, the first T-Mobile MyTouch Q manufactured by LG. Both phones feature slide-out keyboards and are crafted from modest black plastic. The two devices are similarly sculpted in gentle curves as well and have back covers with soft-touch coatings. I prefer the old MyTouch Q's rear surface, though, which has a smoother more premium feel compared with Huawei's model.
Alright, Huawei has been commissioned to manufacture the latest myTouch devices for T-Mobile, and just like last time with LG's offering, they're also supplying a QWERTY one to complement the all-touch option. However, instead of being some sort of modest or super spec'd smartphone, this version of the myTouch Q is more laid back with its entry-level capacity. Fortunately, its $49.99 on-contract price seems tempting enough to warrant a purchase over other comparable model, so let's see how it performs. If you took the Huawei-made T-Mobile myTouch and added a landscape sliding QWERTY keyboard, you essentially have yourself the myTouch Q. Above all, we totally take a liking to its solid build quality and sturdy construction, but it's somewhat bulky (0.56” thick) and heavy (6.52 oz) by today's standards. You can compare the T-Mobile myTouch Q with many other phones using our Size Visualization Tool. Looking all around the handset, we're greeted with things such as its microUSB port, volume control, power button, 3.5mm headset port, single-level shutter key, microphone, and capacitive Android buttons.
This week we've gotten our hands on the next generation of myTouch devices for T-Mobile, one with a push-out QWERTY keyboard, the other without. Both of these devices are essentially identical save for the slight difference in hardware with the keyboard, otherwise they've both got a 4-inch display at 480 x 800 pixel resolution, a 5 megapixel camera on their backs with a single LED flash, and they've got single-core 1.4GHz processor inside as well. With a keyboard you've got the myTouch Q, and without a keyboard you've got the myTouch, and both of these devices are manufactured by Huawei. These devices are relatively heavy for their size at 6.52 oz (185 g) (for the Q) and 4.94 oz (140 g). They're a nice size for the palm and do have a nice styling to them since they're basically the same set of shapes as the HTC versions of the myTouch line that came before them, including the HTC lip at the bottom of the display. They're not made by HTC, on the other hand, they're made by Huawei. Check out our myTouch 4G review from 2010, our myTouch 4G Slide review from 2011, and our T-Mobile myTouch 3G unboxing from back in 2009, each of them made by HTC.
