After the Xperia P, T and S, today we're reviewing the Xperia U, the entry-level model in Sony's flagship smartphone line, released a few months ago. Physically similar to the Xperia S, does the U have what you need to get you through the day? Is it a good daily companion for people looking for a compact smartphone, but who are less demanding than a smartphone junkie who's willing to pay exorbitant prices for the hottest new specs? Answers and more in this week's smartphone review. The Xperia U may not have as impressive specs as the P, T or S, but they're in line with the price. It has a 3.5-inch display with 480 x 854 resolution; a 1 GHz ST-Ericsson processor; 512 MB of RAM; 8 GB of storage for photos, videos, music and apps (only 4 GB of that are user-accessible, and it's non-expandable because there's no microSD card slot) and a 1,320 mAh battery. At the time of writing this, the Xperia U costs around £200 SIM-free. So many smartphones these days have this sober, I-must-appeal-to-everybody look that can inspire prolonged bouts of déjà vu. The Xperia U is not one of these. Like the Xperia S, it has its own, original visual style. Now, you may like it or not, but we think Sony at least gets kudos for their efforts in creating a design that stands out from the masses.
The Xperia U is the final piece of Sony's NXT series puzzle. In March came the flagship Xperia S, a good device that shipped with outdated software. It's only just been updated to Android 4.0. Our verdict? It's not thinner, faster, stronger, or in any other way better than the pack. Next up was the Xperia P, a mid-range device that really impressed, but was difficult to recommend running Android 2.3. Now the Xperia U is here, presenting itself as an entry-level option for those looking for flagship qualities on a tight budget. Think of the Xperia U as Sony's equivalent to the HTC One V — just as the Xperia P and S were pitted against the One S and One X. Entry-level it may be, but the Xperia U doesn't make too many compromises. It features the same 1GHz dual-core SoC as the more expensive Xperia P, but shrinks the amount of RAM down from the P's 1GB to a still-adequate 512MB. The display size has also diminished from 4 inches to 3.5, which has brought some design challenges in the process. Sony has, however, made the U much more personalizable than its siblings: its transparent bar — the hallmark of the NXT series — has been fitted with LEDs that you can command to light up in an array of colors.
The Sony Xperia U is the third of Sony's new wave of Android smartphones, using the same styling as the much larger Xperia S and the slightly larger Xperia P. The Sony Xperia U is the smallest of the three handsets, offering a 3.5-inch TFT display inside the same angular, black case as the Xperia S and Xperia P, and an odd transparent plastic strip acting as part design feature, part information panel and part silly light-up novelty. Prices are relatively modest for a modern smartphone that says "Sony" on it, with the Xperia U popping up for around 169 on Pay As You Go or 215 SIM-free in the UK, or $340 SIM-free in the US. But can you really get the style of the Xperia S on a budget? It's pretty close. The Sony Xperia U is small and solid, offering much the same in balance and build quality as last year's excellent Sony Xperia Ray, with Sony putting three capacitive touch buttons beneath the display, indicated by tiny silvery dots. There's an explanatory icon embedded in the transparent strip, telling Android newcomers these buttons are, from left to right, Back, Home and Menu.
The Sony Xperia U is a petite, budget Android blower that packs a dual-core chip into a dainty, pocket-sized format. It boasts a strip of coloured lights that pulse and change as you swipe around. It's an eye-catching feature although jazzy mood lighting won't be to everyone's taste. Another colourful flourish is the U's swappable end caps. These let you personalise the look of the phone, turning a monotone blower into a snazzy two-toner, should you so desire. With a SIM-free price in the region of £200 -- or on monthly contracts from as low as £10 a month -- this mid-range 'droid could be as light on your wallet as it is in your palm. The Xperia U is a pocket-sized blower powered by Google's Android operating system that hopes to light up your life. You'll either love or hate the Xperia U's coloured mood lights. If you're a hater of this sort of peacocking, you might prefer the more conventional looks of the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus instead. But if you're a magpie type attracted to bright shiny stuff, you'll dig the U's chameleon tendencies. It's a small phone so large-handed folk should steer clear. The screen size is 3.5 inches on the diagonal, which is the same as the Apple iPhone 4S.
Sony has just welcomed the smallest member of its Xperia family in the shape of the diddy Xperia U. It joins stablemates including the impressive 4.3in Xperia S and the 4in Xperia P. The Xperia U only has a small 3.5in screen, and feels far smaller than its bigger siblings – and yet it feels surprisingly hefty. In actual fact it is thicker than the other Xperia devices and is nearly as heavy. However, even with its small frame, it manages to squeeze in some decent specs including a dual-core chip and a five-megapixel snapper. It may be small but the Xperia U has the same design as the bigger Xperia handsets – including the coloured lip that sticks out beneath the display, and a see-though bar, which glows blue when you get a notification. But this little fellow has a neat trick all its own – the lip can be changed for one of a different colour. The back of the device pops off so you can get to the SIM card slot and battery. However, you can't expand the 8GB of onboard memory, because there is no microSD slot. The snapper is impressive for such a small handset – the five-megapixel camera produces sharp, colourful pictures – although the autofocus takes half a second to do its thing.
The Xperia S has all the spotlight to itself in the NXT series, but history has taught us that Sony (and previously Sony Ericsson) can do wonders in the compact class. In two generations of minis and the Xperia ray, the Japanese have delivered packages that no one in the same price range can beat. We are not saying those smartphones were perfect - it's all about cutting the right corners in this class and Sony's engineers have proven time and time again that they are pretty good at that. The Xperia U is seemingly no exception, judging by a quick glance at the list of pros and cons. The Sony Xperia U specs sheet reads like a high-end device for the most part and the design of the smartphone easily manages to keep pace. Sure it's not the slim sweetness of the Xpera ray, but the Xperia U is still nicely compact and the transparent strip, which changes its color to match the screen contents, is a cool accent. The obvious catch is the very limited internal storage - 4GB for your documents and media files and 2GB for apps is what you get out of the box and, if that's a deal breaker, you should probably start looking for other options as there's no way around it.

The touch areas are big and very sensitive to presses, meaning it's easy to use the phone without thinking too much about your actions or having to aim your button stabs.
The Sony Xperia U begs to be noticed with its removable bottom caps in different colors and boxy design, clearly aiming for the younger crowd, but its capable hardware and affordable price actually make it suitable for everybody. We have a dual-core processor, the new NXT design line of Sony with the transparent strip in the bottom, a screen with good pixel density, and fast camera capable of HD video. On paper the only thing to hold the Xperia U back is its Android Gingerbread software, but do all these nice features work in sync in the latest Xperia phone for the mass market? Read on our review to find out...Boxy like an old Volvo, the 12mm-thick Sony Xperia U is a shrunk copy of the Xperia S, complete with the curved back and the at the bottom that lights up when you press the three capacitive “dots” above it. Here it can light up in different colors - white, blue, green, red, purple or yellow, depending on the theme and song you play, and this is pretty eye-catching. It also serves a double purpose by housing the antenna, thus allowing easy signal access for improved reception.Size Visualization ToolThe here are more responsive than on the Xperia S for some reason, the is placed right underneath your thumb, and the below it is comfortably long and wide, very easy to press, with good feedback.
