Sony Xperia Tipo
The Tipo is essentially the baby smartphone in the Sony Xperia range of devices. In India, this is the first entry-level Xperia smartphone. In a price segment where smartphones clearly look, feel and perform with the \"budget” aspect in mind, the Tipo isn't being held back by that. Straight out of the box, your attention is inevitably drawn to two aspects of the Tipo – the tiny form factor and the surprisingly good finish. Up front, the 3.2-inch display does look rather small. Or maybe all the big display phones we have been testing all this while have spoiled us! The black bezel wraps around the display, with three touch sensitive keys – return, home and options. Where the bezel finishes is where the plastic colour body starts, and runs all around the sides and the back. Also read, First Impressions: Sony Xperia Tipo The left spine has the micro-USB port, while the right spine has the volume rocker. The top and the bottom sides are curved, with the power key on the top. Flip the phone over, and the completely clean battery panel is a rather rare sight! The camera is towards the top left, while the rest has an absolutely matte plain white coloured finish. The speaker sits just below the XPERIA logo. What we did not like is the battery opening mechanism.

Sony is churning out new Xperia phones at a rate of knots – and here's number five for this year, the Xperia Tipo (and the Xperia SL is set to launch next week in Berlin...) So where does the Tipo fit within the range? Well, it's certainly the cheapest, at a tad over the 100 quid mark, but still comes packed with features. There's a 3.2-megapixel snapper AND it runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The back of the phone is covered in rubber, which makes it feel nice to hold in the hand and ensures you keep a firm grip. It is also pretty scuffproof too. Design-wise it's quite minimal – you'll see a power switch, USB port and volume keys on the sides and touch-sensitive keys for Home, Back and Menu on the front. Prod the phone and these will light up. It's a neat design, even if a tad chunky. In fact that chunky feel reminded us of the old Sony Walkman handsets. Yet it's still light – coming in on the scales at a little under 100g. It still feels pretty solid, though, as if it would stand up to a few knocks and bumps. Sweet system At this price, you'd be forgiven for expecting the Tipo to run on Android's older Gingerbread operating system – but you'd be wrong.

Sony's Xperia Tipo is yet another Android mobile from the Japanese tech giant, this time aimed squarely at those of you shopping on a tight budget. You can bag the Tipo on pay as you go for £100 or pocket it free on two-year pay-monthly contracts starting at £7.50 a month. But is the Tipo the bargain it sets out to be? No. At least, not until Sony releases some serious bug fixes to shore up software stability on the device. I had no end of trouble with it -- with glitches proliferating and causing more disruption than gremlins at a pool party. As it stands, it's simply not reliable enough to be worth your investment, no matter how affordable it sounds. The Tipo is tiny in the hand but it brings a whole heap of trouble. It's also worth noting that while cheap, £100 can now bag you a pay as you go 'droid with a 1GHz chip and a 4-inch screen, provided you don't mind owning a Huawei handset, rather than a Sony-branded blower. The Huawei Ascend G300 offers a far superior Android experience to the Tipo, thanks to a solid software base and better hardware.

The Sony Xperia Tipo slides in right at the bottom of the Xperia handset range, which has grown rapidly since the firm officially divorced from Ericsson at the start of the year.Expected to arrive during the third quarter of 2012, the Xperia Tipo (also known as the ST21i) is likely to carry a price tag in the region of 100, if not a bit lower, putting it in direct competition with LG Optimus L3, Huawei Ascend G300 and Samsung Galaxy Y.You won't be parting with too much cash if you opt for the Xperia Tipo, so what does a hundred notes get you these days? Well, Sony reckons it's an 800MHz single-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 2.5GB of internal storage, 3.2-inch 320x480 display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, 3.2MP camera and microSD card slot.Measuring up at 13mm in depth, the Tipo is a little chunkier than a lot of smartphones currently on the market, but the curved, pebbled shaped design, along with the small 57mm width and 103mm height means it fits in the hand well.Sony has coated the Xperia Tipo in what it's calling "premium rubber", for the white version at least, which has been specially designed to wipe clean with a damp cloth – even stuff like ink should come straight off.
