In a world full of phones you wish you could afford, the Sony Xperia miro is one you don't have to wish too hard for. In honesty, Sony didn't work themselves too hard, but when you're putting together a portfolio from scratch, you want it built on solid foundations. The Xperia miro is another simple package joining the ranks, filling in the blank space between the Xperia tipo and the Xperia go. The miro is a notch above the tipo, and costs an extra few bucks - Sony went about it strictly by the book without taking unnecessary risks. The looks of the Xperia go - minus the rugged treatment - with the Xperia tipo's internals. It's a fairly straightforward mixture that will also fill the price gap between the starter package and the rugged smartphone. Lots of choice for different budgets is the secret to a large and loyal user base. Let's have a look now at all the features and the possible deal-breakers. The major improvements over the Xperia tipo are the bigger LED-backlit screen, the higher-res camera and the secondary cam for video calls. The screen is the same size and resolution as the Xperia go's but isn't the Bravia-backed Reality display we've seen on a number of Sony and Sony Ericsson handsets.
It seems like only yesterday that we were putting the Sony Xperia Tipo through its paces, but here already, with just the smallest of spec boosts, is the Sony Xperia Miro. The entry-level smartphone market is becoming increasingly crowded as it is, so it's a surprise that Sony has seen fit to release two handsets that, on paper at any rate, are incredibly similar. That it has launched them so close together is even more baffling, and surely risks rendering one of them obsolete.Buying GuideBest Android phoneIt's not just the Sony Xperia Tipo it's got to contend with, either. The boost in specs has brought with it a boost in price, as you can currently pick the Sony Xperia Miro up for 159/AU$240/US$239.99 SIM-free. This price range puts it in competition with the similarly styled Sony Xperia U and the HTC Wildfire S.So, does the Sony Xperia Miro do enough to justify its price tag? Well, first impressions aren't great. The Sony Xperia Miro has a 3.5-inch 320 x 480 display, which is on the small side these days, particularly when cheaper handsets such as the Huawei Ascend G300 pack a 4-inch display. But coming from the Sony Xperia Tipo, it actually feels like quite a jump in size - it's only 0.3 inches bigger, but the difference is surprisingly noticeable.
Sony has followed its budget-friendly, Xperia Tip, with a slightly more expensive smartphone focused on social networking. While the Xperia Miro still slots into the mid-range category, it does suffer from some performance issues. Sitting below the usual touch-sensitive buttons for Home, Menu and Back, is a strip that glows when the device awakes from sleep mode. We love that the colour changes depending on the theme you choose, be it purple, green or whatever. Turn over the phone and you'll see a rubberised rear, which is scuff-resistant and makes the device nice to hold. Sony has made much of the handset's design – and it looks really good, It's obviously it's an Xperia, as it is rectangular in shape and has the logo sported on both the back and the front. It feels solid to hold, and while our review model sported an all-black finish, there is a white version too, which has different coloured strips along the bottom. The Miro runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich, but it's a shame that the 800Mhz chip on board is not able to run it well. The Tipo had similar problems, as it also had the same processor. Flip between menus and desktop and you'll be plagued by stutters.
Introduction:Let's say you are a young, socially active individual who is looking for a decent smartphone, but isn't quite ready to drop a boatload of cash on one. Well, the Sony Xperia miro, which we are reviewing today, is made just for you then. It is a low-end handset with a 3.5-inch screen, 5-megapixel camera, and a number of built-in social networking features. Add to all this the blessing of running Android 4.0 ICS out of the box, and we have a clear winner on our hands, don't we? Well, we aren't too sure about that yet, which is why it is now time to put the Sony Xperia miro under the spotlight and see what it has to impress us with.Box contents:Design:We aren't happy to say it, but the Sony Xperia miro looks about as exciting as a monolith. (Hint: they aren't exciting.) If it wasn't for the sloping metallic plate underneath the row of capacitive keys on its front, the handset would have had no distinctive visual features whatsoever. What soothes our disappointment a bit is the fact that Sony is offering the smartphone in various color combinations, including a snowy-white version. On the bright side of things, the Xperia miro feels well built, despite being made of boring matte plastic.
Ensuring a complete range of phones from the low to high-end, the Sony Xperia Miro arrives towards the bottom of Sony's handset offering.Due to arrive in the third quarter of the year along side the bottom of the range Xperia Tipo, the Miro is set to come in between 150-200 SIM free, and free on 24 month contracts starting at around 15 per month. This price point pits the Xperia Miro against the likes of the HTC Desire C, BlackBerry Curve 9320 and Orange San Diego – some tough competition in the increasingly-popular budget market. The Xperia Miro offers up a single-core 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage (although only 2.2GB is user accessible), 3.5-inch 320x480 display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, 5MP rear camera, VGA front facing snapper and microSD card slot.Specs-wise, the Sony Xperia Miro finds itself in-between its rivals, offering more bang for your buck than the Desire C, but falling down when compared to the San Diego in both power and screen quality. The Miro is another simply designed handset from Sony, with a clean and uncluttered appearance.
