Reviews: E-Book Readers

The Pocket version of the Reader has pretty much the same spec as the , except that its touch screen is a 5-inch rather than a 6-inch. The only difference comes in the fact that there's no memory card slot. You have to settle for the 2 GB internal memory. That's already enough to store hundreds of books though. If its weight (155 grams) and size make the Pocket an ultra-mobile reader, we prefer the 6-inch for reading comfort and handling. The 6-inch also has a very mobile friendly design.

Sony Reader Pocket Edition PRS-350

No matter how slick an e-reader's physical design, it's hard to resist the urge to touch the screen. Now you can easily use the screen to navigate, with the Sony Reader Pocket Edition PRS-350SC ($180 as of October 7, 2010; the SC model is silver, while PC designates the pink version). Like its larger siblings in Sony's latest line of e-readers, the Reader Pocket Edition employs Sony's unique optical technology to allow fingers to tap away. The Reader Pocket Edition has a 5-inch E-Ink Pearl display, the same kind of screen as on the third-generation Amazon Kindle but 1 inch smaller. Not surprisingly, the device weighs less, too: At just 5.6 ounces, the Pocket Edition is easy to hold in one hand while you're curled up on the couch for a reading session. The optical-technology touchscreen uses infrared sensors to detect where your finger is; it compares that information against a matrix that identifies your finger's position and what action you are trying to accomplish, and then performs that action. The result is striking. I found the display brighter and dramatically sharper than Sony's previous touchscreen technology, with better contrast and clarity, as well as crisp grayscale images.

Sony Reader Pocket Edition (PRS-350)

Sony's been something of a bit player in the ebook reader market so far, but the company is making a big push this holiday season, with new, upgraded versions of all three of its models. Sony's newest Reader Pocket Edition (PRS-350), the smallest of the bunch, is faster and sports a better screen than its predecessor. Thanks to its smallish 5-inch display, the device slips easily into a pocket or purse, and the new touch-screen interface handily navigates books or the revamped Sony bookstore. It's a great improvement on the previous model, but at $179.99 (direct), and without Wi-Fi for downloading books on the go, it's tough to recommend over the less-expensive, better-connected Wi-Fi-only Amazon Kindle ($139). And for a mere $9 more than the price of the Pocket Edition, you can get the excellent Amazon Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi ($189, 4 stars), our Editors' Choice. The best thing about the Pocket Edition is its size. Weighing in at 5.3 ounces, and measuring 5.75 by 4.13 by .34 inches (HWD), the Pocket Edition is downright tiny when compared with other ebook readers; it easily slid right into the pocket of my jeans.

Sony Reader Pocket Edition PRS-350SC

In 2009, Sony was one of the few digital reader manufacturers to release a model with a 5-inch screen--an inch smaller than the standard 6-incher found on the Nook and Kindle. Now the same model--the Pocket Edition--is back in a sleeker, more compact package, and with more internal memory (2GB). Just as importantly, it now sports a touch-screen interface along with the new higher-contrast E Ink Pearl display found in the latest Amazon Kindle and Kindle DX. That the PRS-350 Pocket Edition Reader, which weighs in at a mere 5.64 ounces and measures a very compact 5.71 inches tall by 4.11 inches wide by 0.33 inch deep, has a touch-screen interface isn't really the big news here. Rather, it's that Sony's engineers have finally gotten it right on the third try--at least the touch-screen part. How'd they do it? Well, somehow they managed to remove a layer of screen protection that previously hurt the contrast (the letters weren't as dark as those on the Kindle or Nook) and caused glare issues due to increased reflectivity. Those matters are now resolved, and it's great to see the concept of a touch-screen e-ink e-reader finally hit its stride.
