Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini

As Android continues to expand, most handset manufacturers are pushing the envelope of just how big a smartphone can go. HTC's recent like Evo 4G sports a record-breaking 4.3-inch display and Motorola countered with the equally expansive Droid X. But not everyone is jumping on the "go big" trend. Shortly after it introduced its massive Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson decided to trim the handset rather than enlarging it even further. It was a curious move, and when we first handled the Xperia X10 Mini at the 2010 Mobile World Congress, we were skeptical that Sony Ericsson could pull it off. Now that we've spent time with the X10 Mini, we're a bit more confident. It's still too small for our use, but we realize that other people may appreciate the compact purse and pocket-friendly size. Sony Ericsson's User Experience interface remains accessible and attractive, performance is mostly respectable, and we're glad that the X10 Mini doesn't cut too many features to save space. On the downside, we still have our misgivings about Timescape and we miss a full QWERTY keyboard, but you can get the latter with the X10 Mini Pro.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Review

At the risk of stating the obvious, the Sony Experia X10 was massive, while the Sony Ericsson Experia X10 Mini is, well, miniature. Barely the length of a credit card, it elicits the same sort of reaction as a kitten or new-born baby – you can’t help going “aah”. But the X10 Mini is no lightweight when it comes to features; it has a batch of features that even the biggest of smartphones would die for. When we first held the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini, we were all set to slide the phone open, thanks to the fact that, despite its dinky size, it has a sizeable girth (the battery is built into the phone). But it’s actually all candybar, with control mostly coming via the 2.55-inch TFT capacitive touch-screen. There are also three thin, metallic hard keys right under the screen, including a menu key, a back key, and a menu key for the feature you are in. Despite its small proportions, the Mini is definitely one of the Xperia X10 family, with its four corner UI. In each corner you’ll find shortcuts to music player, messages, dialling pad and phonebook. These four stay in place through the X10 Mini’s four home screens, which can be flicked from left to right, and right to left.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini review

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini should be nothing more than a shrunken version of the Xperia X10 – but in reality it's a whole new phone that gives Android a complete makeover.Oh yes, it's small. Sony Ericsson isn't joking when it says the Xperia X10 Mini is the same size as a credit card. Obviously it's a lot thicker, but the overall size and weight of the super-small Android phone is about equivalent to a packet of Swan matches. It is tiny. The exterior is smooth with only three buttons on the face of the phone – Menu, Home and Back – and there's no D-pad or joystick whatsoever here. The combination screen lock and power button is on the top edge, with a volume up/down toggle and dedicated camera button on the right-hand side. On the bottom edge sits a 3.5mm headphone jack and the micro-USB connector, which requires a sharp, unbitten fingernail to pull open the little rubber stopper that stops pocket fluff build up. It's a simple, straightforward layout. People who are afraid of buttons won't find the X10 Mini an intimidating experience. Inside the box of this unlocked version direct from Sony Ericsson sat the phone, a 2GB microSD card, a micro-USB connector, headphones with inline pause button and five alternate-colour snap-on back panels.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini Review

We'll start this review by trying to explain what the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini is in a few words. So, you know the Xperia X10, right? Well, the X10 mini has nothing to do with it. It's the embodiment of the totally opposite concept that is behind the X10. If we can describe this through numbers, instead of the massive 4-inch screen of the Xperia X10, you get a 2.55-inch one. Get it? It's a totally different experience. That said, we think the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini is a very intimate Android smartphone that has a beautiful design and very little flaws, trying to once again prove the ever popular idea that size doesn't really matter. What's in the box:• Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini handset• 5 additional back panels (pearl white, silver, lime, pink and red)• 2 GB microSD• Li-Pol Battery (non-replaceable)• Stereo headset w/ mic• microUSB cable• Travel charger• User manualAs of present, the market isn’t really choke full of compact Android phones. When you look at the existing lineup, you see the rather large products like the HTC Incredible, HTC EVO 4G and the Google Nexus One, as well as mainstream sizes like the HTC DROID ERIS in the States and the Hero in Europe.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini review: Shrink to fit

It took a while before mobile phones became portable not only in name. At one point, small size alone made a phone something special. Calling and texting were all there was and twelve buttons were nonnegotiable. Those times seem prehistoric now that a contemporary smartphone is expected to do all but the dishes. There we are ? 3.7? touch screens are now the norm. It sounds like pushing the limits of portability but most people won?t mind as long as there?re virtually no limits on functionality. With nearly desktop-like browsing, video and TV ? displays are only supposed to get better, crisper? and bigger. Who would want it the other way? Small touchscreen doesn?t make sense. Now, everyone?s entitled to an opinion. And Sony Ericsson are keen to disagree. Small touchscreen may be against the simple logic, but just don?t rush to judgment yet. Not till you?ve seen the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini. It has more smartphone powers than most users will ever need. It?s a little sweetie, and it?s cool and gadgety too. Just don?t let the size fool you. So, long story short, crowds probably won?t be flocking to the shops to replace their full-sized XPERIA X10 units for the mini version.

Product Survey: Mobiles & Smartphones

Some of you may already be familiar with Sony Ericsson's original Xperia X10 smartphone and its huge 4-inch screen. Although the X10 hasn't been out long, the manufacturer is now releasing a new compact version, the X10 Mini, also running on Android 1.6 (Donut). Could Sony Ericsson be making a stand against the never-ending battle for the biggest smartphone screen? Who knows, but at least it's providing an alternative, even if the pocket format and 2.55-inch screen could make marketing the 'connected user experience' and touch-screen controls a little more complicated. In spite of its watered-down processor, smaller battery and compact dimensions, the X10 Mini still looks like a pretty good phone. But will this new mini mobile have what it takes to prove a major success? It seems that certain manufacturers have had enough of making handsets with giant screens (for smartphones at least), and have now decided that small is the new big. One key advantage is that a compact phone can be easily slipped into a pocket and more or less forgotten about, even though you will inevitably have to fumble around in the bottom of your handbag to find the thing.
