Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro

Sony Ericsson is making a habit of taking an existing phone and sticking a keyboard on it to make a whole new phone. And it's a strategy that seems to be working. The Experia X10 Mini Pro is the X10 Mini with a QWERTY keyboard attached and, despite its imperfect touch-screen, is a nice smartphone all-rounder. The X10 and Mini Pro are themselves scaled-down versions of the Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson's flagship Android handset. It basically covers all the same territory but in a smaller package. The touch-screen is a comfortable 2.55mm and the compact QWERTY keyboard doubles up numerals and symbols to fit everything in, although does manage dedicated keys for both the full-stop and comma. Adding to its smartphone credentials are a volume rocker, really good in-ear headphones and a 3.5mm audio port if you want to plug in your own. The touch-screen is the capacitive type, which responds to gentle swipes instead of pressure, and while it's responsive enough, it's not quite fast enough to keep up with typing quickly. But the QWERTY keyboard means you won't need on-screen message typing anyway. Opening the keyboard automatically flips the screen into landscape mode, and closing it will put the orientation back to portrait.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro

If you love the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, but can't find room for it in your pocket, Sony Ericsson has options for you. Back in February at the 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the company introduced two handsets that cram the Android multimedia experience into a device that can get lost in your pocket. The X10 Mini Pro shares the same features as its X10 Mini sibling, but the added physical keyboard makes for a much easier typing experience. Performance is improved over the X10 Mini, though we'd still appreciate more call volume. The GSM X10 Mini Pro is only sold unlocked in the United States, so it will cost you more than a carrier-subsidized handset. Sony Ericsson isn't releasing pricing at the time, but online retailers are selling it for as low as $325. As with the X10 Mini, the most notable thing about the X10 Mini Pro is its diminutive size. Unlike almost every other smartphone on the planet, you can hide it behind a credit card, and if you have especially large mitts, you might be able to close your hand completely around it. At 3.3 inches tall by 2 inches wide by 0.7 inches deep, the X10 Mini Pro is slightly taller and thicker than its X10 Mini counterpart, but we'll gladly take the added bulk for a full keyboard.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro review

You might get a slight sense of déja vu while reading this review of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro – because it's virtually the same phone as the extremely nice little Xperia X10 Mini we reviewed but a few weeks ago.Only there's one rather obvious and glaring change – the addition of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that's been bolted onto the underside of the X10 Mini Pro, for the benefit of those yet to take the brave leap into entirely touch-based mobile phone operation. Amazingly, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro manages to remain the same physical size as the non-QWERTY X10 Mini – which leads us to presume the X10 Mini was filled with plenty of foam padding to make it bigger than actually necessary. The Xperia X10 Mini Pro's QWERTY keyboard adds extra weight to the phone, giving us a handset that feels much heavier than the slightly lightweight X10 Mini, which somehow tricks the brain into thinking it's a more solid, high quality device. It's lovely in the hand. People will pass it around in admiration. The keyboard flips out with a heavy clunk and is backlit, with light twinkling out through its keys to guide your thumbs when the automatic sensor thinks it's dark enough for you to need a bit of help finding the right buttons.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro review

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro will have to stand on its toes to be seen but it doesn?t have to yell to be heard. Small and boxy, this certainly is not just another mobile phone. The X10 mini pro will impress many with the degree of miniaturization. And it?s not just a likeable chubby ? the X10 has the element of surprise on its side. It hides a capable keyboard behind its back and you wouldn't guess it's a full-featured smartphone from a first glance. Even though there are so many Minis around ? and no less Pros ? the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro doesn?t risk getting lost in the crowd. Ironically, it?s the diminutive size that makes it prominent enough. A fact?s a fact: full-QWERTY smartphones just don?t get any smaller than that. By the way, did you notice that boxy and squarish messengers are on the rise lately? You can?t help it ? market trends call the shots. Four of a kind is not bad at all for Sony Ericsson and their Android operation. They have a funny thing going on though. They just keep zooming out on the XPERIA X10. So is the next thing we?re likely to expect from them an X10 wristwatch? The XPERIA X10 mini had to be as compact as possible and Sony Ericsson do deserve credit for keeping most of the functionality intact.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro Review

Sony Ericsson is getting better at adhering to smartphone release deadlines and thus it is time for us to review another round of chubby cuteness. Released at the end of June as promised, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro is essentially the X10 mini in terms of interface, but with a slide-out keyboard. That being the case, we won't dwell on the software, but rather on its design and performance. Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro is a long name for such a small device, but still, the addition of “pro” brings a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard to the table, so we'll give it a pass. A physical keyboard usually adds a little bulk and heft to a device, and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro is no exception. It's grown from 3.3” (83 mm) to 3.5” (90 mm) in length, but the difference in thickness with the X10 mini is negligible, which actually means thick enough already. At 4.2oz (120gr) it weighs a bit more than the Samsung Galaxy S, which has a 4” screen. The first difference to notice is a nice chromed accent surrounding the phone, which divides the display and the keyboard halves visually. Chrome on black is always a classy combination and one which pushed us in favor of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro design.

Product Survey: Mobiles & Smartphones

Some of you may already be familiar with Sony Ericsson's original Xperia X10 smartphone and its huge 4-inch screen. Although the X10 hasn't been out long, the manufacturer is now releasing a new compact version, the X10 Mini, also running on Android 1.6 (Donut). Could Sony Ericsson be making a stand against the never-ending battle for the biggest smartphone screen? Who knows, but at least it's providing an alternative, even if the pocket format and 2.55-inch screen could make marketing the 'connected user experience' and touch-screen controls a little more complicated. In spite of its watered-down processor, smaller battery and compact dimensions, the X10 Mini Pro still looks like a pretty good phone. But will this new mini mobile have what it takes to prove a major success? To find out, take a look at our test of the X10 Mini. The Pro version of the X10 Mini is slightly thicker and has a full slide-out full keyboard. The keyboard is effective and practical to use in spite of its compact size, as the keys are well spaced out to make text entry easier.
