Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray Review

This is a very unique phone, without a shadow of a doubt. Think of a slim phone, and then squeeze that imagination a bit more. Surprisingly good performance and a build quality that feels better than the price bracket this phone plays in. Will work for someone who wants a sleek phone, but those with slightly stubby fingers will find the slim display a bit tough to use. Doesn’t take away the fact that it is a smart looking phone. Sony Ericsson thinks slim smartphones, and does visualize them well. Over the last few months, we have seen the Arc (read our review here), the Ray and the Arc S (read our review here). Among the three, the Ray brings in an additional dimension of slimness. The point is, does this design work for most people? We think it does, at least for quite a few people. The dimension numbers - 111 x 53 x 9.4 mm do make for interesting reading. Having just finished reviewing the Arc S, the Ray’s unique form factor is appreciated even more. From a slim phone to a two dimensionally slim phone is a big change. And will be even more so for anyone who is shifting to this phone.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA ray Review

The XPERIA ray is easily the smallest smartphone I've ever had the opportunity to lay hands on, and while it may seem at first to be tiny in stature, it packs an oddly enticing set of punches. Head back to our XPERIA ray hands-on and unboxing post to get all the specification details on the device, then come back and get the most important bits: 3.3-inch TFT LCD display a 480 x 854 pixel resolution, a single-core 1GHz processor inside, a VGA video chat camera on the front, and a massively impressive 8.1-megapixel camera on the back. This tiny monster is set to carve out its own piece of the American petite smartphone pie, that's for certain. This device is made of hard plastic and “scratch-resistant” glass for the most part, with a slightly less-than-impressive plastic button sitting at the bottom-center-front. What's awesome about this little half-circle button is that it's got a multi-color half-border of color around it to show off notifications galore. The not-so-awesome piece of the puzzle is that it makes a little tapping noise when you touch it lightly. This seems to me to mean that it's made to be pressed a thousand times but that it's not as perfectly fashioned to fit as the rest of the device appears to be.

Sony Ericsson Xperia ray review: Ray of light

Honey, I shrunk the Xperia arc. No, that's a different story. And yes, we like the Sony Ericsson minis. But that's not how the real story of the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray goes. They did things to the Xperia arc. They took out its beating heart and carved a new phone out of it. But this isn't a scary story, it has a happy ending. It feels the Ray was always living inside the Xperia arc, waiting to be released. Like a seed that will grow a new plant. That's how we imagine the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray was born. They cracked the rock open to get to the gem. The Xperia ray had to shed off layers of armor but lost none of the courage. It's got all the exciting ingredients of the Xperia arc. The sharp BRAVIA engine display is there and so is the 8MP camera, complete with 720p video recording. And the ray is impressively thin too. It is one of the most compact members of the Xperia family, and one of the handsomest phones we've seen. Sure, the arc is slimmer but it's a massive handset. The mini is tiny but too chubby at 16mm. If you want a really slim and compact droid, the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray is one of the few that fit the bill.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray review

It's been a busy old year for Sony Ericsson. As it struggles to regain a foothold in the market it was once sucha major player in, it's been firing out more Android-based Xperia smartphones than long-lost relatives on an episode of Jeremy Kyle. And they're not half bad either. The Xperia Arc has been the flagship of 2011's bunch. Arriving in the spring, it became the skinny poster girl for the Swedish-Japanese hybrid, showing off its amazing screen presence with the help of the Sony Reality Display (the bit that reproduces colour on the screen and makes it look great) but in the Xperia Ray, Sony Ericsson has gone for a smaller model. Before we go any further, there is one point we have to make clear: this phone is small. And thin. Think smaller and thinner than you expect, then shave a bit more off your dimensions. That's what you get.The Xperia Arc (we're going to be making lot of comparisons to the Arc in this review) is 125 x 63mm with a depth of 8.7mm. The Ray slices most of that off and comes in at a remarkable 111 x 53mm. It is slightly fatter, by less than a millimetre, clocking in at 9.4mm deep.

Phone Reviews: Mobiles & Smartphones

The Sony Ericsson Arc is the flagship model in the firm's Xperia range, but the new Xperia Ray is a stripped-back version that's designed to win over female consumers-and not just because it's also available in pink. This small, light, stylish smartphone runs Android 2.3 on a 3.3'' screen and its 8 Megapixel camera has a CMOS Exmor R sensor that can also shoot 720p HD video. The whole thing is powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm processor. Is it a realistic replacement for the Xperia Arc? So it might be made entirely of plastic, but the Xperia Ray still manages to have a reasonably elegant exterior. At 100 g, it's light and not too wide and so it's easy to hold. But how did it go down with the ladies in our office? Well, the fact that it's relatively discreet, and certainly a million miles from the world of ultra-bulky XXL handsets certainly won it some praise. But for us, at least, this is definitely a unisex smartphone. Either way, we like the size. At first sight, the build quality seems decent enough, but upon closer inspection, we spotted three small problems. First of all, the case feels a little fragile at the back. Of course, you don't take it off every day-although you do, however, have to remove it, and the battery, before you can get to the memory card-but the cover is so thin that it's worryingly flexible.

Sony Ericsson Xperia ray Review

No matter how you slice it, the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray is the embodiment of cuteness. It’s stylish, with bikini waistline and shiny black mirrored face, available in various colors, sports the newest version of Android beautified by the Timescape overlay, and has the acclaimed 8MP Exmor R camera sensor. From the looks of it, only a very few things can ruin this munchkin, chief among which would be an eventual high price tag. Is that the case? Read on our review of the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray where we try to solve this puzzle for you...As small touchscreen smartphones go, the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray is almost the perfect size, not getting lost in your palm if you have big hands, and fitting admirably if you are regular. The handset is one of the thinnest smartphones out there, at 0.37” (9.4 mm), and feathery at just 3.53oz (100 g). We also noticed that the Xperia ray is extremely comfortable for one handed operation due to its dimensions - your thumb just reaches everywhere like an anteater's tongue..A big part amidst the phone's positives plays the screen, which is , and Sony Ericsson didn't skimp on the level of image detail, gracing the Xperia ray with 480x854 pixels – a pretty high resolution for a screen of this size

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray review

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray is a mid-range smart phone that runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It has a 3.3-inch capacitive touchscreen and a 1GHz processor, as well as one of the thinnest frames we've seen on a device in this class. The Xperia Ray is available for free on a £20-per-month contract, while the SIM-free edition retails for just under £300. Sony Ericsson is positioning the Xperia Ray slap-bang in the middle of the Android battleground. It lacks the large display of the Xperia Arc, yet boasts a surprising amount of the same internal tech. There's an 8-megapixel camera with 720p video capability, as well as the fancy Exmor R for Mobile sensor, which is brilliant at taking photos in dimly lit environments. You'll also find that the Ray comes with the very latest version of Sony Ericsson's Timescape user interface, and sports Android 2.3 Gingerbread, putting it at the vanguard of the Android scene. The Ray's biggest failing has to be its 3.3-inch screen. Its small size seems quite strange in this era of monster handsets like the HTC Titan and Samsung Galaxy Note. While the resolution is fantastic and the image pin-sharp, it's a display that's likely to cause large-handed people a massive amount of problems.

Sony Ericsson Xperia ray

Three new Sony Ericsson handsets, among which was the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray, were announced pretty hush-hush at CommunicAsia 2011 just a few weeks ago. Looking at the preview unit in our hands, we feel the handset actually deserved more attention to be brought to it.As small touchscreen smartphones go, it is almost the perfect size, not getting lost in your palm if you have big hands, and fitting admirably if you are regular. The Xperia ray is one of the thinnest smartphones at 0.37” (9.4 mm), and feathery at just 3.53oz (100 g), plus we noticed that the handset is extremely comfortable for one handed operation due to its dimensions.A big part amidst the phone's positives plays the , which is 3.3” LCD, a breath of fresh air after the huge 4”+ Android phones of late, since Sony Ericsson didn't skimp on the level of image detail, gracing the Xperia ray with 480x854 pixels - one of the highest resolutions we've encountered on a screen of this size. Plugging the numbers in a pixel density calculator returned 299ppi, which is just shy of the 300ppi “Retina” threshold. Moreover, it features Sony's Mobile Bravia Engine, for enhanced color intensity and contrast while watching pictures or video.

Sony Ericsson Xperia ray : First look

Big is in with Android phones but the Xperia ray is eager to prove that petite smartphones have a charm of their own. All the horsepower of the Arc in a body that's a centimeter shorter both ways - think a premium saloon turned into a roadster. The Sony Ericsson Xperia ray has plenty to offer, not the least of which is an 8MP camera with HD video recording and a Bravia Mobile engine powered screen with eye-popping pixel density. The combo Sony Ericsson have put together includes a 1GHz single core processor, 8MP camera with 720p video and screen expertise borrowed from Sony's TV department. It's the same concoction behind the Arc, the Neo, and the new Mini - now the Xperia ray. On the face of it, the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray looks like a widescreen version of the Mini, but whereas the Mini is rather chubby at 16mm, the Xperia ray clocks in at 9.4mm (despite the bigger, 1500mAh battery). The camera is an 8MP unit to keep in line with the current crop of high-end droids. The 3.3" screen of FWVGA resolution has nearly 300ppi pixel density (the Retina display has 326ppi) and we appreciate the mobile incarnation of Bravia. Here's what the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray has to offer to those who have been on a lookout for a compact smartphone with high-end specs.
