Take a cursory glance at the smartphone market and you'd be forgiven for assuming bigger always means better. Android smartphones are already available with vast screens, rumors suggest the iPhone 5 will introduce a larger display, and Windows Phone has just seen its first uber-panel with the 4.7-inch HTC Titan. Not everyone wants to fill their pocket with handset, however, and for them the Sony Ericsson XPERIA mini pro could tick more than a few boxes. Compact and yet still offering a full physical keyboard, Sony Ericsson's dinky device reckons it offers the best of both worlds, but can it live up to the billing? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. The XPERIA mini pro follows in the footsteps of the original X10 mini pro, but with some much-needed improvements. The first-gen model had a low-res screen, sluggish processor and outdated version of Android; the XPERIA mini pro boosts the 3-inch display to 320 x 480 and the CPU to a 1GHz single-core paired with Adreno 205 graphics and 512MB of RAM, running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread with Sony Ericsson's various customizations on top. It's still small, then - 92 x 53 x 18 mm in fact, and 136g - but there's less compromise to be made to achieve that.
So, just as Sony Ericsson accompanied its X10 Mini with the X10 Mini Pro in 2010, this year's excellent new Xperia Mini is now accompanied by a heavier, sturdier model of the same size, the Xperia Mini Pro. The new smartphone also has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for those of you still stubbornly refusing to go 100% touchscreen. The internal hardware has been updated from last year's X10 Mini Pro, with three fairly big specification upgrades. The Xperia Mini Pro now features a larger 3-inch screen, a 1GHz processor powering the mobile phone, plus the up-to-date Android 2.3 operating system. There's a small price premium for the QWERTY keyboard. While the Xperia Mini is currently selling SIM-free for around the £200 mark, the Xperia Mini Pro is on offer from £240. So is there any point in paying the extra cash for a very, very compact QWERTY keyboard? When the keyboard is slid away out of sight, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro looks exactly the same as the Xperia Mini. The three physical buttons of last year's X10 Mini Pro have been replaced by one bigger, chunkier Home button, with new capacitive touch buttons for Menu and Back either side of it. As with the Xperia Mini, it's a change for the better.
Last year's X10 Mini Pro was pretty well received, but it was criticised for its small screen, middling performance and use of an ageing version of Android. Sony Ericsson seems to have taken heed of what the critics said. The Mini Pro is still one of the smallest Android phones around, but it now includes a slightly larger screen, a speedier chip and more up-to-date version of Android. With a price tag of around £240 SIM-free, it's significantly cheaper than the likes of the Xperia Arc. But how much have these changes added to the desirability of this rather dinky phone? Not everyone wants a smart phone with a large screen, but usually you have to compromise on features if you opt for a smaller device. Despite its small size, however, the Mini Pro manages to pack in pretty much all the goodies you'll find on larger phones. And those who spend a large amount of time using their phone for messaging -- whether it's tapping out SMS messages, sending emails or posting Facebook updates -- are likely to find the Mini Pro's slide-out keyboard hugely useful, as once you acclimatise to the small keys it's faster to use than most onscreen keyboards.
Sony Ericsson have always done a good job of putting big ideas in a small package. The original Xperia mini lineup wasn't ridiculously powerful but had plenty of personality. The pint-sized smartphones did well on the market and you can bet the successors are keen to build on their good start. The Xperia mini pro is under the lights today and ready to raise the bid. We can imagine the Arc and the Xperia Pro calling this one junior. Not even a hint of condescension in that though. The Xperia mini pro has the same hardware as its bigger Xperia siblings, a fact that makes the level of miniaturization all the more impressive. There's room for a proper QWERTY keyboard at that. And there is a Reality display too, a solid battery and HD video recording. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is in charge. A respectable list of features and we're only starting. There is so much more to explore. Before we go on though, let's take a closer look at all the key facts and figures, and the potential deal breakers. For such a small handset, the Xperia mini pro leaves no major feature out. Not a phone to put up with being looked down on. Not after meticulously upgrading everything there was to upgrade about the original Xperia X10 Mini pro.
We love smartphones, but if you like a neat handset that will slip into a jeans pocket, they're not always the ideal. Just a few years ago, before mobiles needed cameras, touch-screens and 3G antennas, the likes of Nokia, Siemens and Samsung offered plenty of diddy phones but they haven't been seen recently. The closest we've got is last year's Xperia X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro, which were chunky but still small, and featured slide-out keyboards and touch-displays. Sony has dropped the X10 from the name this year, but the handset is still about the same size (there's about a 1mm all round in it) and offers a much bigger display (now it measures 3 inches rather than 2.55 inches). To hold, the handset feels good. It has a glossy reverse (unlike the rubberised reverse on the Mini) and features chrome edging. The chunky feel is probably a matter of taste, especially if you're used to a slim smartphone. However, it is small enough to almost be able to hide behind a credit card - and even though it is a bit chunkier and weighs 16g more than last year's model, it is a very usable handset. The display's res is the same as it was last year, even though the screen is larger - and we were surprised how good it looked when we viewed video on it.
There are not many phone manufacturers nowadays that are brave enough to venture outside of the well-known and safe field of doing large black slabs, stuffed with dual-core processors. Indeed, from design standpoint, the times are much simpler now than they were before. We're witnessing a relatively bland landscape, mostly filled with boring-looking smartphones, which, albeit powerful, have visibly little sense of style.Until now, this trend went mostly unnoticed, due to the very nature of the smartphone-rocking crowd – tech-savvy individuals who mainly care about the specs and capabilities of their devices, rather than how they look. However, with the rapid proliferation of smartphones, we're beginning to see more and more casual cell phone users making the jump to using an iPhone, an Android handset, etc. With such popularization, sooner or later there's going to be demand for devices that look a bit more refined, a bit more sophisticated, if you will. Some manufacturers are already willing to target their devices to this new, previously unexplored area of the market. Sony Ericsson's Xperia line is a perfect example. With handsets like the arc, ray and mini, the joint-venture is openly showing that its offerings don't rely on specs alone.
