Sony Ericsson Xperia Active Review

Are you the sort who likes to leap up mountains at weekend, or go climbing, or do other disgustingly healthy activities rather than lazing at home reading the Sunday papers with a mug of caffeine and a fat-laden croissant? Then the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active is just made for you. The handset is made on the rugged side, to allow it to survive whatever its sporty active owner might do with it and yet it manages to be neat in size and lightweight. It's still pretty chunky though, and has a neat three–inch screen. Weighing in at 11g, it feels solid enough without being heavy to carry. If you're a keen runner, Sony has seen fit to include a wrist strap in the box, so that you can pop the handset inside when you head off for your constitutional. Whether you're recording all your efforts using the onboard WalkMate app, or listening to tunes, the phone can stay with you. We took it out for an admittedly brief jog, but found the strap a tad loose for our arms (maybe we need a few more sessions down the gym). It does look rather like you're sporting a transponder Star Trek style, so the look may not be for everyone. In the hand, however, the Xperia Active feels good – and it's pretty rugged. The display fended off our attack with pointed objects, and it survived this and a few outings in our backpack with barely more than a light scratch or two.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Active review

Sony Ericsson's released a boat load of different Android smartphones this year. We've had two versions of its huge 4.2-inch Xperia Arc flagship, mid-range options such as the excellent Xperia Ray and Neo, plus the smaller Xperia Mini and Mini Pro for those on a tight pocket-space budget. The Xperia Active sits somewhere at the lower end of that lot. You get a 3-inch capacitive Bravia Engine touchscreen running at 320 x 480 resolution, along with a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and the ability to record video at 720p resolution, all stuffed in a dust and water-resistant case - plus a few health apps pre-loaded. And there's a stretchy armband in the box for wearing it at the gym, or just keeping it safe.Prices for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active, at the time of reviewing, start at around £240 to buy an unlocked model, with monthly contracts available from around £20 depending on how many included minutes and texts you require. This makes the Active a relatively modest cheaper option in this age of dual-core monster phones, plus you get water and dust resistance as a bonus. The phone's certainly interesting to look at, with its lightweight brushed metallic surround and bright orange band making it look like an odd blend of mobile phone, kitchen utensil and emergency flotation device.

Sony Ericsson Xperia active review: The Rainmaker

Flick it, kick it, throw it, wet it. Drag and drop it. And watch it come back for more. The Sony Ericsson Xperia active is a survivor. The rugged smartphone has a Bravia Reality display and exchangeable covers, 1GHz of oomph and HD video, and plenty of sporty apps. It's got you - tucked under an arm strap. It goes wherever you go. Durable smartphones are becoming an Android-exclusive niche and Sony Ericsson want in. But the Xperia active believes that an IP67-certified phone doesn't have to be all muscle and no charm. The Xperia active is a cute little phone - the action-scene body double of the Xperia mini. Go ahead, laugh it up, Sonim. This is a phone that doesn't take much pocket space, which is a big plus in our book. And no, they don't have to be cargo pockets either. The IP67-certified Xperia active is supposed to withstand water immersion in up to a meter for as long as half an hour. It's also dust-proof and shock-resistant. Before you ask, we're not going to test it to the very limit of endurance. Like we said, some real heavy duty rugged phones can sneer all they want. It's just that a compact sporty smartphone for both urban and wilderness hikes may as well have the last laugh.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Active review

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Active is a tough smart phone running Android 2.3. It's water resistant and dustproof, and boasts microSD expansion and a 5-megapixel camera capable of shooting 720p HD video. Contract prices for the Xperia Active weren’t available at the time this review was compiled, but SIM-free the phone will cost you around £250. Most modern smart phones tend to conform to pretty rigid stereotypes. The race to produce the thinnest and lightest device shows no signs of abating, but it’s often forgotten that not everyone desires a svelte handset. As the Motorola Defy proved a few months back, there’s room in the market for a smart phone that can withstand the rough and tumble of the outdoor world. The Xperia Active takes this to the next level, and small screen aside, it trumps Motorola's rugged Android phone in almost every regard. It's chunky, but otherwise perfectly pocket sized. We're also impressed with the fact that it's running Android 2.3, as well as the latest version of Sony Ericsson's much-improved Timescape user interface. Add in 720p video recording and a super-responsive touchscreen, which works even when covered in water, and you've got the dream smart phone for lovers of the great outdoors.

Sony Ericsson Xperia active Review

Smart and rugged, two words that don't tend to go together all that often, especially when it comes to phones. A light to moderate encounter with the floor would pretty much wipe out the majority of smartphones out there and as for the rugged-phone market, if you could save more than 1000 numbers on a rugged phone released in the past decade, you'd be in luck. So while rugged phones and smart phones have tended to keep their distance, after the game-changing Motorola DEFY paved the rugged-smart way, the market is now onto its next wave of rugged-smartphones with the DEFY's successor, the Samsung Galaxy Xcover and the Sony Ericsson Xperia active all vying for a place in your action-packed lifestyle. Today we'll be taking a look at the Sony Ericsson offering, with its rugged water resistance, dust proofing and pre-installed fitness apps coupled with its smart 1GHz processor, Android 2.3 and optimized user interface. Add to that the host of accessories the handset ships with and you're getting a pretty good deal out of the box. Screen sizes above 3.7" were regarded a novelty little over a year ago, but with the rise of the Android has come an influx of 4-4.3 inchers, and with the Google Nexus Prime (4.6"), HTC Titan / Sensation XL (4.7") and Samsung Galaxy Note (5.3") just round the corner, there's little doubt that the trend for bigger screens is far from over.
