Sony Ericsson XPERIA mini and mini pro hands-on [Video] [Updated]

By SlashGear, published 05-05-2011

Sony Ericsson has just announced the XPERIA mini and mini pro Android smartphones, the latest in the company’s super-compact line, and we’ve stopped by for a sneaky hands-on play ahead of their planned release in August 2011. Just like their predecessors they’re built for those who don’t want a 4-inch or bigger display and prefer their smartphone to be discrete; unlike those predecessors, they’re not underpowered minnows. They’re obviously small – and that compact 3-inch fascia does leave them feeling on the plump side, too – but despite the plastic construction they don’t feel cheap. The XPERIA mini pro snicks open with a reassuring, spring-loaded click, and the keypad itself is nicely sprung and reasonably responsive. Sony Ericsson ...

MWC 2011 Wrap-Up

By SlashGear, published 19-02-2011

Another year, another Mobile World Congress, and the unstoppable juggernaut that is the smartphone industry continues apace. SlashGear took its biggest team to MWC 2011 to-date, and still found more than enough to keep us busy in Barcelona. After the cut, the stand-out products, the key mobile themes of 2011, and how tablets are muscling in on smart mobility. Phones When you’ve got “Mobile” in your name you’re obviously going to have more than a few cellphones on show, and MWC 2011 didn’t disappoint. Perhaps more so than any year previous, we’d already seen at least some of the key device details in the run up to Barcelona, either via leaks – like the XPERIA Play – or through pre-launch teasers – like the Optimus 3D. Absent as ever is...

Hands on: Red Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo

By TechRadar, published 18-02-2011

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo hasn't been released yet, but TechRadar managed to bag some time with the new colour variant. The Xperia Neo is a refresh of last year's Vivaz, but with a much better chassis and an Android, rather than Symbian, OS powering things along. It's Android 2.3 as well, meaning you'll not only be getting a touch of the Timescape overlay that brings easier to see social networking, but the latest and fastest (plus less battery-sapping) of Android. The Xperia Neo is a made of shiny plastic, but that doesn't stop it having a more premium feel - the weight of the device is offset by the lighter covering.TechRadar brought you our exclusive hands-on Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo review earlier this month, but the blue version looked a lot more anodised than you'd expect from its pl...

Sony Ericsson’s 4G Android tablet prototype spotted

By SlashGear, published 18-02-2011

We were only just talking about Sony Ericsson’s Android tablet plans, and now shots of what could be the company’s 4G prototype have emerged from deep in the TDIA MWC 2011 booth. NieuweMobiel spotted the slate – branded with the TD-LTE 4G used by China Mobile, the carrier which Sony Ericsson has already said it is working with – complete with a front-facing 3.0-megapixel webcam and what’s estimated to be a 6 to 7-inch touchscreen. Full specifications are unknown, but TDIA did confirm that the slate runs – or will run; it’s not clear if it’s a functional unit or not, and was shown turned off – an unspecified version of Android. TD-LTE is also being trialled in Germany, so this might not be solely a device for the Chinese market. In fac...

MWC 2011: Hands on: Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro review

By TechRadar, published 14-02-2011

As the serious, slide-out QWERTY member of the latest Sony Ericsson Xperia handsets, the Xperia Pro might not be the most exciting of the bunch, but it's still got a lot going for it. After all, it's essentially a bulked-up Neo with many identical specs, from Android 2.3 to the 1GHz Snapdragon processor. But it's the physical QWERTY that will make all the difference to some users, so here's our hands on Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro review, based on a non-final version handset; we'll bring you our full review just as soon as the finished handsets are available.Because of that built-in keyboard, there's quite a bit of bulk to the handset – although it's certainly not as heavy in the hand as the LG Optimus 3D is. The now-familiar Android buttons are all present and correct, excepting the search...

Hands on: Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo review

If you cast your minds back to the murky depth of Christmas, you'll recall TechRadar brought you word of two new phones on their way - the Sony Ericsson Anzu and Hallon. The former has emerged as the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, but the latter one was a mystery - only the fact it was a reboot of the Vivaz form factor was available as a clue to what it would be.But you can rely on TechRadar to come up with the goods - and we've got you an early hands on Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo review to take a look at.The phone shares very few similarities with the original Vivaz - only the form factor and key arrangement remain to help you see any evolution in the line.Unlike the Xperia Arc, the 'human curvature' form factor remains here - the back is rounded to make it easier to hold in the hand, although wh...

SlashGear Morning Wrap-Up: January 24 2011

By SlashGear, published 24-01-2011

Let’s start this fine Monday with a launch straight into space: once with an Android Device, another time with a Samsung balloon full of paper planes. Next lets get back to Earth with the continuation of the 3D wave with some Tegra 2 3D Chips that’ll be popping up this spring. Grab a big fat update to ADW Launcher EX with several new docks and fixes. Next order of business, Florian Mueller’s been found bunked out – who is he? He’s the guy who found a bunch of Oracle codes in Android’s open source code, saying the suit against Android has total footing -doesn’t appear that way any more. Then remember that $10K iTunes gift card prize for the 10 billionth app downloaded? The mother of the girl who won it hung up on the “you won” call. Chec...

Honeycomb may never come to mobiles

By TechRadar, published 20-01-2011

Google's Android 3.0 OS, codenamed Honeycomb, may never come to the smartphone market.Since tablets have been announced using the new operating system rumours have been abound that a potted-down version will be coming to smartphones. But when asked by TechRadar if the new OS would be coming to mobiles in the future, a Google spokesperson said: "We took the opportunity with Android 3.0 to enhance the UI."Right now it's a tablet operating system."However, the spokesperson also said that in the future Google would like to unite the numbers systems [to stop Android 2.x being for smartphones and Android 3.x for tablets].Unified future"I think that coming together is a good idea. What we're trying to do here I make a base platform that's so good, that others only need to add native elements in th...

Video: iOS 4.3 multi-touch gestures demoed

By TechRadar, published 20-01-2011

Apple has granted developers an extra little treat in the iOS 4.3 betas – a preview of multi-touch gestures. With the release of the second iOS 4.3 beta to developers yesterday, Apple said that the multi-touch gesture input won't be coming to customers when iOS 4.3 is shipped, rather it is "providing this preview to gather input on how these gestures work with your apps". Still, it's a pretty safe bet that we'll see the gestural input method make its way to our iOS screens at some point in the future (on the button-less generation, perhaps?). Cool but clumsyAntoni Nygaard has helpfully recorded a video showing off how the gestures work for multitasking. While four-fingered swipes to scroll through applications instead of having to bring up the dock are kind of cool, the do look a little ...

Samsung Galaxy S2 gets more specs and new codename

By TechRadar, published 20-01-2011

The Samsung Galaxy S2 rumours keep rumbling on in, with more purported specs breaking loose. As well as an exciting new codename – Seine, presumably after the Parisian river – the handset's camera has received a spot more detail. The sensor is rocking 8-megapixels and it's capable of recording full HD (1080) video. We're assuming that the 4.3-inch Super-AMOLED display can playback in pretty good quality too. Personal cloud nineNocut News, the Korean site that broke this new round of leaks, also alludes to "Personal Cloud Computing" which could see the handset come with some online storage space as well as its built-in memory and microSD cards. The rest of the leaked specs are pretty much known quantities – Android 2.3, a NFC chip, 1GB of RAM and a dual-core Samsung Orion processor ar...

In Depth: Intel: 'We haven't missed the smartphone boat'

By TechRadar, published 20-01-2011

Intel believes it still has a "huge opportunity" in the smartphone market. That's according to the head of Intel's Software and Solutions Group Renee James. TechRadar grabbed a few minutes with James and colleagues Doug Fisher and Peter Biddle to talk about Intel's plans for the smartphone market, MeeGo and AppUp, Intel's application store. Believe it or not, Intel's Software and Services Group (SSG) would be among the top five software companies globally if it were a separate entity to Intel – and that's before adding in the proposed acquisition of McAfee which James is personally responsible for.ARM vs Intel: the next processor war beginsBut surely Intel realises it may have missed the boat in the smartphone market? "No I don't, obviously," says the senior vice president of Intel SSG. ...
