Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman Review

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman! Yes, we now have another Android smartphone that carries the legendary brand name, the first one being the Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman. However, while the W8 was more or less a clone of the Sony Ericsson X8, the Live with Walkman is an entirely new device. It offers some decent specs as well, namely a 1GHz processor, 3.2-inch display, and both a rear and front-facing camera, which puts is right in the mid-range category of smartphones. But is it any good? Let us take it for a spin and find out...First of all, kudos to Sony Ericsson for designing a smartphone that does not have the boring-slab-o-plastic appearance. Yes, plastic may be what it is made out of, yet still, we quite like the Live's fresh looks and colorful accents, and we believe that the youngerly crowd will do so too. A very practical addition is the dedicated Walkman key, located on the device's top side, which acts as a shortcut to the Walkman music player app.Size Visualization ToolUsing the Sony Ericsson Live with a single hand is as easy as pie since it fits nicely in your palm and its dimensions allow for your thumb to effortlessly reach all of the display's edges.

Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman review

The Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman is a music-focused smart phone running Android 2.3. It boasts a 1GHz processor and 720p video recording. You can pick it up on contract for as little as £10 a month, or alternatively you can take the SIM-free approach and purchase one for around £150. If you're old enough to recall the days before MP3s and portable media players, then you'll no doubt have a certain degree of affection for Sony's famous Walkman brand. Back in the days when Dolby was cutting edge and your playlists were confined to 90 minutes per tape, Sony ruled the roost. However, it's best to cast aside any of these nostalgic feelings when considering the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. Although it is marked with the distinctive logo, it's not actually that strong a music playback device -- at least when compared with the competition. Aside from a special Walkman shortcut button, there's nothing here that hasn't already been seen on Sony Ericsson's Xperia phones. The Live with Walkman even uses the exact same music player app. The fact that it only comes with a 2GB microSD card is an even clearer indication that this handset isn't going to usurp the iPhone as the public's portable music player of choice; 2GB just isn't enough space for serious music fans.

Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman review

Not the first time Sony Ericsson are trying to mix man and robot. But this time they're not simply putting the W in Android. The Live with Walkman is part of the company's ongoing effort to bring their smartphone lineup up to date. The next one due for upgrade is the Sony Ericsson W8. Just like its predecessor, the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman puts the music in your pocket without scraping the cash out of it. It's more than a music player though - a 5 MP cameraphone and a Gingerbread-powered smartphone with all the right features for the money-conscious buyer. The Live with Walkman has the refreshed Xperia styling of the new Minis and the Ray. It's basically the same phone as the new Xperia mini - minus the ultra-compact chassis and the Bravia screen. What you get in return is the Walkman credentials. The Live with Walkman does well to build on the X8 with a 5MP autofocus camera and HD video, a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor and bigger screen. Here's the Live with Walkman at a glance, with all the likes and dislikes. The Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman is designed for music lovers and tries to stay focused on things that matter to a presumably younger audience.

Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman Review

This is one phone whose reputation precedes it – with the Walkman moniker, it's easy to tell that it is going to have music at its core. This is a neat sized handset with a touch display – it's pretty lightweight at 115g, but not so small that it will be replacing your tiddly iPod nano. However, it looks good, is nicely designed and has loads of features. The power button sits on the right, and the Walkman button is on the left – this takes you straight to the music player. The 3.5mm audio jack can be found on the top edge in the middle. The home key sits on the front – it wakes the display – but takes a firm touch to get it working. The only other two buttons are the camera button and volume rocker on the phone's right side. Sony Ericsson has been having a lot of success with its phones recently – the Xperia Ray and Xperia Arc S in particular. The Live with Walkman doesn't have the Ray's high res display, but it still does a good job. The screen is smaller (it measures 3.2 inches) and features the hot corners found on the Xperias. These are like shortcut buttons – touch the top-left corners and they'll take you to ‘messages' and let you search your music.Even though the hot corners make the display appear smaller, they are really handy and do a great job.
