Product Survey: Mobiles & Smartphones

Sony Ericsson has been letting the competition get away from it for some time now. Only with its Walkman music phones has the brand been able to hold on to its aura. At a time when the company has finally announced smartphones operating under Android and Windows Mobile, they haven't forgotten their multimedia range with the release of the Aino. At first sight the Aino seems compact as you like. Something you forget when you pick it up as it's the sort of weight we've become accustomed to on smartphones. We like the sober and elegant style of the thing however and the finish inspires confidence. The exterior coating, reminiscent of the Hero, is nice to the touch and gives good handling. The multifunction proprietary Sony Ericsson connector could easily have been substituted for a micro USB however. A shame. One of the main criticisms of Sony Ericsson phones is without a doubt their aging interface – though they do compare well with Symbian-based Nokias! The Aino marks the start of something new. Although you notice the aesthetic of previous phones straight away, you can also see the influence of the much renowned XCross MediaBar taken from Sony TVs and the PS3.

Sony Ericsson Aino - black

Sony Ericsson has a knack for making beautiful multimedia-rich phones and it has certainly done so with the Sony Ericsson Aino. The Aino has a stunning display and a fantastic feature set that includes an 8.1-megapixel camera, a media player, Remote Play compatibility, Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, GPS, and support for AT&T's 3G network. It even comes with a handy dual-charging dock that will charge both the phone and an included stereo Bluetooth headset. We weren't thrilled by the lack of a standard 3.5mm headset jack and the cramped keypad, but if you want a well-made phone that delivers a great multimedia experience, the Aino fits the bill. However, you will pay a price for it--the Aino costs $600 because it is not available with any carrier subsidies. The Sony Ericsson Aino has a pretty straightforward blocky rectangular design. Still, it does have rounded edges and a matte chassis that is quite attractive. Measuring 4.09 inches long by 1.97 inches wide by 0.61 inch thick, the Aino is a little bulky and will likely make a dent in your pocket. It's no lightweight either at 4.73 ounces, giving it a very solid and sturdy feel in the hand. The Aino comes in both white and black.

Sony Ericsson Aino review: I know fun

Sony Ericsson are on the move recently and the Aino is very much part of the agenda. But living in the shadow of the Satio and X10 is not much fun we guess. So, the Sony Ericsson Aino is keen to live a double life. At first glance, it's a touchscreen PMP, but on a second look it's a regular slider phone with an extra big screen. It's not the ultimate PlayStation phone but it does have Remote Play, to wirelessly pair with Sony's PlayStation 3. As far as feature phones go, the Aino has pretty much everything - excellent connectivity, full-featured navigation, a great camera, plenty of internal storage and a simple-but-snappy touch media menu. By the way, don't let anyone tell you touchscreen functionality is limited to the proprietary Sony Ericsson multimedia menu. We were pleasantly surprised with Opera Mini, which seemed to quite agree with the Aino touch system. Touchscreen navigation is all there and it performed very smoothly. This means touch controlled Java games might work as well. All right, this was just a single little secret revealed. Let's take a closer look at what else the Aino may be hiding there.
