By HotHardware, published 06-12-2013

Is the age of the next wave of television upon us? It's a question that's fairly tough to answer at this stage, but there's no doubt that it's on the minds of many. Time Warner Cable and Samsung are clearly on that list, as the two have teamed up in order to bring content directly to Samsung's Smart TV range without a set-top box. The TWC...

Galaxy S4 to help Samsung double its market share lead

By GSMArena, published 21-03-2013

Samsung is looking to take an even larger lead over the competition this year, thanks largely to its new Galaxy S4 flagship. In 2011, just two short years ago, Nokia was the top dog in terms of phones sold, holding some 30% of the market. Then Samsung, which rides the Android wave better than anyone else, took center, rising to 29% in just one year, with most of that market share being taken...

Visa's payWave System Coming To Future NFC-Equipped Samsung Smartphones

By HotHardware, published 26-02-2013

Samsung is most certainly winning the Android war in terms of market share, profit share, and mind share. In fact, it's getting tougher and tougher for those other Android OEMs to make a dent in the market, with Samsung spending billions each on marketing alone. Needless to say, we suspect that Visa is pretty pumped about this new agreement....

Pantech Vega IM-A860 gets leaked via Wi-Fi cert

By GSMArena, published 12-10-2012

It seems someone is making 1080p mobile displays and quad-core S4 Pro processors like they're going out of style, as Pantech is now rumored to be working on a FullHD smartphone of its own. Everyone is keen to catch-up to HTC's DNA smartphone, which was unveiled last month as the first in what will likely be a new wave of smartphones with 1080p screens. With the likes of Samsung, Sony, and LG...

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Now Available for Galaxy S3 on AT&T

By HotHardware, published 12-04-2012

Good news for Samsung Galaxy S III owners riding AT&T's wireless waves. An official Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update is now available for your device, beating both Verizon Wireless and U.S. Cellular to the punch (in the U.S.), though not T-Mobile, which has been doling out Jelly Bean for a few weeks. This is not an over-the-air (OTA) update,...

By GSMArena, published 19-10-2012

Granted, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to the oh-so-popular Galaxy S III has been seeding at some places for more than two weeks now. But the UK owners (and those in a list of other European countries) were not lucky enough to make it in the first wave. Starting this week though, users in UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, and Romania are finally able to enjoy all the...

IFA 2012: Samsung's See-Through OLED Screen Display Cases

US Galaxy Note 10.1 shipping to retailers ahead of announcement?

By GSMArena, published 08-03-2012

The US Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is expected to be announced at the Samsung US event on August 15 but US retailers are already receiving units. The model number of the recent stock is the same as the European variety so perhaps what we're witnessing is the first wave of availability of the international Galaxy Note 10.1, and not the US spec device. US retailer CT-Miami sent us some...

Samsung explains the reason for the exploded Galaxy S III

By GSMArena, published 07-07-2012

Remember the Galaxy S III that exploded not so long ago? After the accident in Ireland, Samsung started an investigation to see what caused it and it's back with the results. The company even contracted Fire Investigations UK (FIUK) to help them get to the bottom of it and they've concluded that it's a external heat source, presumably a domestic microwave oven. Here's what the report...

Samsung Waves Around Industry's First 16GB DDR4 Memory Modules

By HotHardware, published 07-03-2012

Samsung said it's sampling both 8GB and...

Bada 2.0 update seeding to the Samsung S8500 Wave

By GSMArena, published 27-01-2012

The Bada 2.0 update certainly took its time to arrive, but it's finally seeding to S8500 Wave smartphones. So if you have resisted the temptation to flash it by yourselves from one of the leaked ROMs, you time has come. The release isn't officially announced by Samsung just yet and there is no information about its rollout schedule, but we suspect it will go global quite quickly. Bada is not...

Bada 2.0 update not making it to older Wave phones before 2012

By GSMArena, published 31-12-2011

We thought we would be bringing smiles all-round, when we posted back in early September that Samsung were on track to provide nearly every one of their devices bearing the 'Wave' name with a nice dose of Bada 2.0 before the year was out. Of course alongside the likes of the Wave 3, which came running the latest iteration of Sammy's OS out of the box, it was also expected that users of all...

Review: Philips 42PFL7666H

By TechRadar, published 16-12-2011

OverviewPhillips has taken its sweet time in delivering its 2011 line-up of LED TVs, but this 7000 Series screen was worth the wait. Sticking to the brushed aluminium look that has served the brand well in the last few years, this 42-inch Edge LED TV screen's headline act is Easy 3D.It's perhaps the best, simplest name yet for the passive 3D system (LG calls in Cinema 3D), although we're slightly confused as to why Phillips has chosen it over active shutter 3D for the 42PFL7666. It's a company obsessed with picture quality, debuting all manner of new processing goodies every year, so why opt for this less detailed, and often less impressive, flavour of 3D?The obvious answer is that the use of passive 3D technology means Phillips can include multiple pairs of the much cheaper 3D glasses in ...

Samsung S8600 Wave 3 review: Third time's the charm

By GSMArena, published 12-07-2011

Samsung Wave 525 and 533 won't be updated to bada 2.0

By GSMArena, published 12-07-2011

Bad news, Wave 525 and 533 owners. Despite previously confirming that all Wave devices will receive the juicy bada 2.0 update, current turn of events have put the Wave 525 and Wave 533 out of the game. That's because Samsung has grouped all Wave devices with WQVGA resolution into two groups - "Wave(WQVGA)" and "Wave(WQVGA)_bada 1.1 only". Guess where the Wave 525 and 533 are in. The...

Carrier IQ Controversy: Your Phone Is Spying On You, And Your Wireless Carrier's To Blame

By MaximumPC, published 12-02-2011

Have you heard about that nasty little bit of software called Carrier IQ? A security researcher by the name of Trevor Eckhart discovered the mysterious software running on his Android phone earlier this month, dug deeper into things, and found Carrier IQ, a monitoring program that comes preinstalled on several phones, tracks all kinds of data – including HTTP requests, GPS location and app usage information – and in many cases, can’t be turned off. Millions of phones are affected. Carrier IQ’s been found on phones from Samsung, HTC and Apple– but wireless carriers could be the real force behind the rootkit-like software. Carrier IQ has been found on a bunch of HTC phones, and when ZDNET – who is maintaining an excellently updated article on which companies are using Carrier IQ,...

Samsung Wave III Review (Exclusive)

By Thinkdigit, published 12-01-2011

In an ecosystem where only the fittest survive, we have seen the fit become fitter (Android and iOS), and the not so fit (Windows Phone 7.5) becoming very fit! Nokia seems to be thinking on the right lines when it is hedging its future bets on Microsoft’s born-again smartphone OS. RIM is fighting, and fighting hard. Which leaves us the burning question of the day - where does Samsung's Bada fit in? Look & Feel At a first look, and even much beyond that, the Wave III does seem to have [...] Read the entire article

Tackling the Tablet Conundrum: Which One is Right For You?

By MaximumPC, published 21-11-2011

Do you even need a tablet? If so, which one? We review the current crop of tablet mainstays. We explain the hardware and OS features that matter the most. Follow along as we unravel what tablets are actually good for. When a consumer electronics category confuses the masses, it’s usually because the technology is hard to understand on a fundamental level. Have you ever tried to explain texture fill rates to your GPU-ignorant brother-in-law? Or RAID levels to your mom—who shouldn’t even be asking about RAID in the first place? Videocards and storage devices can confuse the lay consumer, but at least the prospective hardware buyer usually knows he or she needs a videocard or storage device in the first place. Your game won’t play at a high resolution? A new videocard is probably the...

Hands on: Huawei MediaPad review

By TechRadar, published 11-08-2011

We spent some time checking out the HuaweiMediaPad, the Chinese manufacturer's new tablet, at a swanky London event this week. It's a dinky little unit, measuring just 10.5mm at its thinnest point, and comes with a seven inch screen, joining the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the BlackBerry Playbook at the more pocketable end of the tablet scale.Huawei (pronounced Hu-wah-wey, if you're wondering) is claiming it's a 1080p screen, but it seems according to our digging that we're looking at a 1280 x 800 resolution offering. There's a 5MP camera on the rear of the device, and a 1.3MP camera on the front, with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor powering things along under the hood.In reality, there's very little remarkable about the Huawei MediaPad, which is intriguing for a relatively unknown...

Buying Guide: 10 best Freeview HD recorders in the UK

By TechRadar, published 11-08-2011

Best Freeview HD recorders: OverviewIn the rush to bring out Freeview+ HD recorders in time for the World Cup in 2010, one or two manufacturers – including Pace and Sagemcom – quite obviously rushed out their products before they were finished.Cue EPGs that didn't work, stalling operating systems and snarling consumers.Happily, virtually all of those teething problems have since been fixed via over-the-air software updates, and there have been some new additions to the range as well. There are 500GB hard disks with options to double that capacity, one-touch series link recording, wireless streaming of media around your home, recording to a USB device and even the occasional built-in Blu-ray player. Oh, and pin-sharp high definition recordings. One thing no manufacturer has offered thus f...

Exclusive: Samsung: Bada is diesel to Android's petrol

By TechRadar, published 11-03-2011

Samsung has told TechRadar that it is happy with the performance of Bada - insisting that its mobile OS is diesel compared to the mass-market Android's petrol. Samsung's Bada platform may be approaching two years old, but the company has only shifted 300,000 Bada-toting handsets in its Wave range since the 2010 launch. But the company seems happy with these figures as Keith O'Brien, head of content at Samsung, explained in an interview with TechRadar. "We've been responsible for 5.3 million downloads, which, from 300,000 devices, is 17 downloads per device – so from our point of view it demonstrates the engagement we're achieving with Bada and reinforces the strength and appeal of the content we're providing," he told us. Samsung: Bada remains a big focus for us

Samsung has announced its second bada developer day – as it looks to encourage developers to make apps for its own operating system and insists that it remains a big part of the company's plansSamsung has, of course, enjoyed great success with Android and Windows Phone on its high end handsets, but it insists it is not letting bada fall by the wayside and is hoping that the 3 November event will stir interest. The event will bring demonstrations on features including Near Field Communications and explain why bada 2.0 (released in August) has some unique selling points that make it worthwhile. CommittedSpeaking ahead of the event, Simon Stanford, head of mobile for Samsung UK & Ireland, said: "Following the success of our bada developer day last year, we were keen to hold a simila...

Hands on: Motorola Razr review

By TechRadar, published 19-10-2011

Hands on Motorola Razr review: HandlingMotorola has stayed true to its roots with its latest release – the Motorola Razr. Named after the popular clamshell handset which was released back in 2004, Moto is relying on seven years of brand building in the hope that its newest handset can compete against a new wave of smartphones – including the recently announced Samsung Galaxy Nexus. When it comes to looks, the Motorola Razr is nothing like its past namesake. Moto has dropped the clamshell look for a chassis that's ultra-thin – it's a mere 7.1mm. Motorola is claiming this makes it the thinnest smartphone in the world and we are not going to argue. In the flesh, it is positively waif-like. It's dexterous enough, though, to not feel like you are going to snap the thing.Looks-wise, Moto ha...

Ultra-slim Ultrabooks strut down the catwalk

By TechReport, published 14-09-2011

IDF — Mooly Eden laid out the basic parameters for the new wave of laptops that Intel has been pushing during his IDF keynote earlier this morning. In a nutshell, Intel is encouraging PC makers to emulate Apple's MacBook Air systems, although (of course) they don't use those exact words.  The systems are intended to be very thin and light, with decent performance courtesy of Sandy Bridge processors, solid battery life (although that one seems negotiable so long as the thinness remains), and prices below $1000.  The first Ultrabooks should be arriving in the next few months, though obviously the Sandy Bridge-based MacBook Air is out now, as is Samsung's Series 9, which we've reviewed. In order to achieve their thin profiles, Ultrabooks are likely to include SSDs (almost excl...

Review: BlackBerry Torch 9810

By TechRadar, published 09-09-2011

Overview, design and feelThis time last year, BlackBerry fans were salivating at the imminent release of the Torch 9800. For the first time, those who'd been demanding a touchscreen smartphone from RIM (without SurePress, which we'll just gloss over) were getting their way with the safety net of a keyboard below that slid out. On top of that was 3G, a 5MP camera and the brand spanking new OS. What wasn't to love? And 12 months on we feel like we're experiencing a bit of deja-vu, because the Torch 9810 is now hitting shelves. And to look at it, not much has changed. The only thing that you'll notice as being really different on the exterior is the material it's made from. The BlackBerry Torch 9810 has been given less a makeover and more a new jacket. Gone is the black and dark chrome fascia,...

OverviewThe Samsung UE60D8000 is the brand's most advanced LED screen yet. A 60-inch, 3D-capable and Smart TV-enabled flatscreen with drop-dead gorgeous looks, it sports a take-no-prisoners £4,300 price tag. With its built-in Wi-Fi, app store, web browser, media streaming and smartphone control, the UE60D8000 enters the upper echelons of the HDTV market, and faces stiff competition. First and foremost it has to contend with Panasonic's TX-P65VT30, which claims an extra five inches of screen real estate and a loyal band of followers. Consumers will also be looking at the LG 60PZ950T, Philips' 58-inch Cinema 21:9 and Samsung's own 64-inch D8000 plasma. While it's the flagship set in Samsung's LED range, you can get the D8000 in smaller, more affordable versions. IFA 2011: Hands on: Samsung Wave 3 review

By TechRadar, published 09-02-2011

Ever since the first Wave handset debuted at Mobile World Congress in 2010 with Samsung's own Bada OS, it's been somewhat of a muted alternative to Samsung's never ending army of Android phones. And at IFA 2011, Samsung has launched the Wave 3 – a new spin on the metallically cased Wave line that features the latest 2.0 version of the Bada operating system alongside a 4-inch Super AMOLED display. Before you scoff, it must be said that Bada is a fine mobile operating system. We've used it on and off since launch. It's quite Android-like in operation but its weakness is the app ecosystem that sets Android and iOS apart from the rest. While there are plenty of Bada apps available, many of them are totally rubbish. Yep, we guess you could say the same about the Android Market, but it is a lo...

Bada 2.0 brings multitasking, Wi-Fi Direct, near field communications (NFC) and voice recognition with it, as well as support for Flash and HTML5 web browsing and apps. The three new Wave smartphones, of which we'd expect at least one to make it to the UK, will launch with Bada 2.0 and range from premium to entry-level standards. Long time comingThe last we heard of Bada 2.0 was at the tail end of 2010 when Samsung showed off the OS for the first time. The company also managed to launch the Samsung Wave 578 at this year's Mobile World Congress and although the handset offered NFC, it was languishing on Bada 1.1. The release of the SDK a...

Microsoft confirms Skype video calling for Windows Phone Mango

By TechRadar, published 25-08-2011

Microsoft has confirmed that new Windows Phone handsets 7 that launch with the imminent Mango software will feature front-facing cameras and Skype integration. The revelation came at New Zealand's TechEd event, from where the official NZ Windows Phone account tweeted:"Nice, they just confirmed at TechEd NZ that #WP7 devices with forward-facing cameras are coming with Mango - and Skype will support it." New toyIt's not clear if the Skype integration will land at the same time as the Mango update itself (for which the good money is on a 1 September launch) or if it'll be a separate app or a future update. But what is fairly safe to assume is that a number of the new batch of Windows Phone 7 handsets, if not all, will come with video-call-friendly front-mounted cameras. So, we're lock...

Updated: Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V unveiled with Android 2.3.4

By TechRadar, published 25-08-2011

Sony Ericsson has unveiled the Xperia Neo V ahead of IFA 2011, following its moderately successful Xperia Neo handset that was released early this year. There's not much to report on the Neo V front; it's largely the same handset as the original Neo - same dimensions, same weight, same display, same innards. The one major change that we can see is that the Neo V comes rocking a 5MP camera, a step down from the 8MP affair that the older handset boasts. Considering the "photographic punch" was one of the things we praised in our Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo review, chopping this down may not have been Sony Ericsson's wisest ever move. DowngradeIt will be the first Xperia handset to ship with Android 2.3.4, the 3D-friendly software update that Sony Ericsson also announced today with a few Faceboo...

In Depth: Whatever happened to Wireless USB & HDMI?

By TechRadar, published 19-08-2011

A few years ago, we were promised that USB cables would be a thing of the past. And that our HD TVs would also connect to our Sky boxes and Blu-ray players wirelessly. So where are the wireless ultrawideband (UWB) technologies that were supposed to get rid of these cables? Picture the scene – it's CES 2007. The consortium of manufacturers that make up the USB Implementers Forum has a small but significant presence on the show floor, demoing cameras which download their pictures to your PC just by being placed in their presence. A printer starts spitting out high quality prints with no cables attached. In a side room below the Sands Convention Centre, Philips shows off TVs with Wireless HDMI adaptors. Samsung IFA teaser hints at new 7in Galaxy Tab

By TechRadar, published 19-08-2011

Samsung has launched a pair of teaser videos, warming its mobile fans up for the announcements it plans to make at IFA 2011. One video is pretty clearly hinting at a phone of some kind, with the tag line "Something big is coming" easily translated from marketing speak into "Something new is coming". We don't think it'll be the massive 4.65-inch Ice Cream Sandwich phone that we know Samsung has in the works, but it could be any one of a number of lower-spec Android or Windows Phone 7 Mango phones. Tablet timesThe other video is more ambiguous; titled Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2011 Episode 11, it shows us sunlight shining through tree branches, slow motion children playing on a beach, the sun rising over breaking waves, some kind of propeller thing and a tattered yellow flag buffeted by the wi...

Opinion: Did LG save Android before it began?

By TechRadar, published 18-08-2011

The name LG could have been as synonymous with Google's OS as HTC, according to an article on Android founder Andy Rubin. The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) has published a look at the rise of the operating system - and the most interesting fact claimed is that LG backed out of a deal to be the primary partner for Android in 2007.HTC brought the first three Android phones to market and now enjoys a status as one of the world's largest smartphone makers, whereas LG is struggling to make waves in the same industry. It's an interesting point of conjecture - did LG lose out, or did Google and Android really win big by not having the Korean firm as a primary partner? I'd have to go with the latter - we've seen LG's propensity to make sub-par phones when it comes to user interfaces (S...

In it, he showed off the video-taking capibilities of the device, by walking up to Gordon, and asking him to rant right there on the spot. And, as it often does with Gordon, hilarity ensued. Check out the footage below, and have yourselves an awesome holiday weekend. See you Tuesday!

HTC: 'Nokia Windows Phone 7 deal will help us'

Updated: Ice Cream Sandwich: everything you need to know

By TechRadar, published 18-05-2011

Google has dropped some interesting information about Ice Cream Sandwich, the next version of Android at its Google I/O conference. We'll update this article with more information on the new Android as soon as we get it. It talked about the new OS during the Opening keynote speech of the Google I/O conference in San Francisco. Real Ice Cream Sandwiches aren't exactly prevalent in the UK - we have wafers - so if you want to see a real Ice Cream Sandwich, you'd better do some scrolling. As we reported from Google's keynote at Mobile World Congress, Google's mantra for the OS is "one OS everywhere" – it will be a single version of Android running across phones and tablets, unlike Android 3.0 Honeycomb that only runs on tablets. That's why it's a Sandwich y'see. Will Ice Cream Sandwich be Andr...

Opinion: Why can't the networks keep our signal safe?

By TechRadar, published 17-05-2011

There are some things in life we bank on - while a stable mobile signal isn't always one of them, we at least expect the networks to be able to transmit it without an issue. Then, a few months ago, parts of the Vodafone network go down. 'It's a conspiracy!' the Twitterverse cries, convinced it's a ploy to make more money from not letting its customers call each other and somehow not paying more UK taxes. Then Vodafone comes out with an explanation straight from the 1980's: Someone stole bits of our network.Simple as that, apparently. Thieves got in, stole some bits, and then the network went dead along the M4 corridor (probably with some grand 'powering off' sound and confused yet panicky looks reserved for the moment when someone pulls a big switch in Doctor Who.")And we're sure the competi...

Photo (Video) Awesome #30: Samsung Shows us the New Central Station

By MaximumPC, published 14-05-2011

Samsung recently swung by our offices to show off their Central Station IT hub, which is a display, network, and peripheral docking station all in one. The 23" (or 27") display connects to your notebook or laptop via a USB dongle; whenever your PC is in range Central Station automatically connects enabling you to use it as either an extended or secondary monitor with full 1080p HD, of course. The base of the display has inputs for mobile/smart phones, cameras, MP3 Players, external Hard Drives - pretty much anything you can think of that uses either USB or USB 3.0 technology, which also makes it a one-stop recharging station. Check out the video for more details and a small demo, and stay tuned for an official review!

Nokia N9 Meego handset passes FCC, to launch this year?

By TechRadar, published 05-12-2011

The Nokia N9 Meego-running handset has made its way through Federal Communications Commission (FCC) testing, much to everyone's surprise. There's been no sign of the handset since December 2010, and, although Nokia promised 'a Meego-related product' would ship this year when the company announced its partnership with Microsoft, speculation was rife that the tie-up was the death knell for the Nokia/Intel OS. But it seems that there's life in the old dog yet. The FCC tests every single radiowave-emitting device intended for the North American market, and has proven a healthy breeding ground for product leaks and speculation over the past few years. Out-datedThe FCC filing doesn't shed much light on anything other than confirming the handset's continuing existence. Leaked specs that surfaced l...

Review: Panasonic DMP-BDT110

By TechRadar, published 05-12-2011

The Panasonic DMP-BDT110 3D Blu-ray player is the 'lite' version of the DMP-BDT310, boasting many of the same features but with a few nips and tucks to get the price down a bit (by £70, to be precise). It's actually two rungs down the range ladder from the DMP-BDT310 – sitting between them is the DMP-BDT210, which is practically identical to the BDT310 in everything but connections. The DMP-BDT110, on the other hand, has some much more obvious omissions. Those missing features are things that you could file under 'luxuries' though – most of the big new features and core Blu-ray tricks for everyday viewing are still present and correct. All three decks look roughly the same, with their moody black finish and the sort of slimline dimensions to make a cover girl green with envy. The casing...

Google Shows Off Trippy WebGL Project

By SlashGear, published 05-11-2011

The major focus of today’s Google I/O keynote was obviously Chrome along with the official pricing and dates of the Samsung and Acer Chromebooks. But that didn’t stop Google from a small tangent into the future possibilities of javascript, HTML 5, and WebGL. Google Creative Lab has been working on various experiments and projects over the years to demonstrate the native browser graphics possibilities, and at today’s keynote they demonstrated one that incorporated music, video, 3D graphics, live rendering, and real-time painting with shader effects. Not to mention, it was all interactive as well, with users being able to contribute to the 3D world by constructing new models within the browser. At one point in the demo, some sample pre-built 3D models were shown, includi...

SlashGear Science Week in Review, May 6th 2011

By SlashGear, published 05-07-2011

This week in science, we know that computers can drive us crazy at times, but can a computer actually be made insane itself? Apparently so. We have a schizophrenic computer that may actually help us understand the disease in humans. Plus, a couple of other crazy ideas: robotic cat ears controlled by brainwaves, and a DIY stylus for operating your smartphone (or other touchscreen device) with your nose. We also have space news, a new way to use wind power, and a healthy dose of robots. Continue past the cut for all the science goodies. Too…much…information… One of the theories on schizophrenia is that people suffering from the disorder cannot forget or ignore as much stimuli as they should, and that makes it harder for them to process everything coming their way. They lo...

Brain-sensing Necomimi robo cat ears are furry-awesome [Video]

By SlashGear, published 05-06-2011

We’ve seen brainwave-sensing used for mind training games, the judicious application of comedy torture, and attempting to control the nearest robot: now the technology has reached its summit, with cosplay-style wiggling cat ears. The handiwork of Neurowear, the Necomimi straps a couple of motorized furry cat ears to a brainwave-monitoring headband, so that you can wiggle them appropriately. When you’re active and attentive, the ears perk up; when you’re feeling tired and sluggish, they lie flat. Get enthusiastic – and, frankly, who wouldn’t be permanently enthusiastic wearing a set of robotic cat ears? – and they wiggle and twitch. It’s seemingly controlled by an Android app running a Samsung Galaxy Tab. According to Neurowear, “Necomimi is...

Rice University graduate student extends WiFi for a mile using empty TV stations

By SlashGear, published 28-04-2011

I would bet most of us are cable users, so we don’t think much about the airwaves around our homes that local stations use to broadcast to people that still use antennas. In many smaller local markets there will only be one or two networks using those airwaves leaving much of the bandwidth unused and wasted. A graduate student named Ryan Guerra at Rice University has devised a really cool way to extend WiFi signals for over a mile using the vacant TV broadcast airwaves. Guerra calls the project super WiFi and the system takes the normal WiFi signals and shifts them over to the TV station frequency. The student has already tested the system in a home where the cities free WiFi signals didn’t reach thanks to lots of tall trees surrounding the property. Super WiFi could get the sing...

Windows Phone: The Next Six Months

By SlashGear, published 21-04-2011

Today, Windows Phone 7 turned six. Six months, that is, counted from the October 21 2010 release of the first batch of Windows Phone handsets. It’s a big day for the platform, too; not only a retail milestone, but an early inking of the deal between Microsoft and Nokia which will see the Finnish phone giant bet its smartphone fortunes. So, where next for Windows Phone, and will Nokia’s input – and the “billions of dollars” Microsoft will be pushing its way – help it gain all-important market share? With no publicly released sales figures from Microsoft, it’s hard to know what sort of success – or failure – it’s building on for the six months moving forward. Still, it’s hard not to compare Windows Phone’s track record...

2D Glasses, 3D No More

By SlashGear, published 21-04-2011

3D is all the rage these days, apparently. I’ve already made my position clear when it comes to what I’m now going to dub faux-3D, because it isn’t real, you see. I will repeat it here for posterity. It is bad. And I’m not the only one that thinks so. There are some reports that say that 3D might even be hazardous to your health. Some of my friends, over here at 2d-glasses.com have already taken the initiative and blocked one style of 3D forevermore. Read more for how they did it. There are a few different principles that faux-3D imagery uses to trick your brain into believing that the images are popping out of the screen in an oh-so-shocking manner. The one that these glasses block use a strange property of photons called polarization. The physics is cool, though...

AT&T deliberately breaks Samsung Focus HSUPA? Not so says carrier

By SlashGear, published 21-04-2011

The Samsung Focus ended up being our unofficial pick of the first-wave of Windows Phone 7 handsets, not least because of its brilliant display and speedy uploads. Now, it seems, AT&T wants to take 50-percent of those abilities away, with the accusation that the recently-released NoDo update actually disables HSUPA. Updated after the cut with AT&T comment It seems that, for one reason or another, AT&T doesn’t want its users to hammer the new HSPA+ network and so has been systematically blocking HSUPA uploads from each of its devices. The Focus was the one handset which didn’t have the artificial limitation. Ironically, while it’s taken AT&T months to get this blip of success in their otherwise dreary HSUPA line-up addressed, it’s only taken days for...

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 16 2011

A couple of the new hires at Apple were former gaming company marketing types leading to the conclusion that Apple might be getting ready to take on Sony and Nintendo in the gaming realm. If you've been keeping up with us these past few weeks, you'll know that we've got a little monitor-crazy--and the fever hasn't yet subsided! Samsungs awesome six panel display peaked our interest, so we decided to see what else we could pull off. NEC came through in the clutch, sending us three 30" panels to run games in landscape mode (thusly eliminating those annoying middle bezels), and three 46" TVs.  I took some wrangling (and some beast hardware), but we've been gaming on all three of these crazy set ups for an upcoming monitor deathmatch, and we decided to keep a camera running while we were checking them out. Check it out in the video below! And let us know in the comments which set up you'd prefer.

SlashGear 101: What is Android 3.0 Honeycomb?

By SlashGear, published 04-11-2011

Google is well known for search and for its advertising program, but over the past few years the company’s phone software, Android, has been making waves in stores across the world. Flexible enough to be easily modified by handset manufacturers and powerful enough to take on Apple’s iPhone, Android has carved itself a growing niche in smartphones; now Google is turning its attention to tablets, and it’s using Android 3.0 Honeycomb to do it. Read on for the full SlashGear 101 rundown. Android is for phones, isn’t it? We’ve already covered the basic premise of Android in a previous SlashGear 101, Google’s freely-available phone software that has already taken a huge bite out of the mobile world. How Google can save Google TV

By SlashGear, published 04-05-2011

Google’s projects seem to inevitably fall into one of two camps: either they’re runaway successes, like Gmail or Chrome, or dismal failures, like Wave. Teetering on the edge right now is Google TV, the company’s push for the living room which launched with a bang last year, maintained just enough momentum to reach the holidays, and then fell well short of the CES 2011 splash we’d expected. Call it a reboot, call it a refresh or call it a desperate resuscitation, Google TV is in dire need of some retuning. Some background first. Announced in May 2010, Google TV’s target audience was the four billion TV viewers worldwide who, Google reckoned, watched on average 5hrs a day. TV + search was the concept, a mixture of streaming internet content, broadcast video an...

Review: Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

By TechRadar, published 04-04-2011

Sony Ericsson's original Xperia X10 was a brave first go at an Android phone, offering a large screen, a collection of social media enhancements and a stylised version of Google's rapidly growing mobile operating system. However, the X10 was hindered by delays, held back by glitchy software and arrived running the already ageing Android 1.6 - and only received an update to 2.1 recently. It was, to put it mildly, a bit of a mess. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc obliterates all of those awkward memories in a flash. It's running the very latest Android 2.3.2 version of the OS. It's arrived on time. It's fast, and it's very, very stylish indeed. And it's not that expensive for a single-core Android phone in 2011 at £430 SIM free or £30 per month on contract - can Sony Ericsson's Reality Display, ...

Google’s Android anti-fragmentation push is vital

By SlashGear, published 04-01-2011

Reports earlier this week painted an ominous future for Google’s open-source strategy with Android, the company’s mobile device platform. Gone, insiders at OEMs and carriers suggested, was the eager-to-please ambition and flexibility of the early days, back when Google was desperate for market penetration and manufacturer support. Instead, they claimed, Android head Andy Rubin had become a harsh gatekeeper, doling out early access to new iterations of the OS only to those who’ll toe the Google line, attempting to trip handsets that used rival services, and doing it all under the banner of “non-fragmentation.” Open-source lovers wrung their hands; iOS addicts basked in a righteous glow. Android, so the arguments went, was supposed to be our open-source salvat...

Samsung 22-inch transparent LCD displays hit production

By SlashGear, published 31-03-2011

Samsung has announced that it has begun mass-production of 22-inch transparent LCD displays, with two models – capable of either black & white or color images – in the first range to be offered. Rather than a traditional backlight, the 1680 x 1050 displays (which have 500:1 contrast ratios) use ambient light to illuminate them; Samsung has boosted transparency to 15-20% (over 5% in normal panels) so that sunlight is enough to make the picture visible. Inputs include HDMI and USB, and Samsung reckons that power consumption is down by 90-percent over traditional displays as well. Users can look straight through them, like glass, and while it envisages advertising and “interactive communication” uses initially, there are also some very appealing transparent noteb...

Palm: The Rise and Fall of a Legend

Perhaps the most convoluted soap-opera in the history of technology... I was there, when the Pilot landed. It was the summer of 1996, and the US Robotics Pilot 5000 had just arrived in the bootLab (‘boot Magazine’ was the then-newly-launched precursor to Maximum PC). With unprecedented ferocity, we editors were fighting gladiator style for dibs on reviewing this tiny bit of pocket-sized plastic with its dingy monochrome screen. Not even the latest uber-PC or 3D graphics card generated such editorial lust. There was something magic about the initial Pilot.  Something simple, elegant, genuinely useful. It was one of the few products we all knew would be worthy of a “Kick Ass” award almost immediately upon touching it. That first Pilot may not have been the first PDA, but it was...

Photo (Video) Awesome #23: Samsung's Six Panel Display Up and Running!

By MaximumPC, published 19-03-2011

In this weeks photo awesome we return to the Smasung MD230x6--which I've nicknamed "the Beast"--a six monitor display (23" each, 1920 x 1080). After spending most of an afternoon assembling all six panels, we realized one of the six panels was non-responsive. Once we'd gotten a new one, and swapped it out for the DOA panel, the challenge was to get everything wirect correctly and running. Oh, and what a challenge it was--after downloading drivers, fussing with screen resolutions and changing settings for most of a day, we got all six panels up and running. We've even run some of our initial DisplayMate tests on it, which so far have produced pretty solid results. Check out the video to get a quick glimpse--and stay posted for next week, when we really put the MD230x6 through it's paces by ...

Motorola Atrix 4G Review

By MaximumPC, published 03-11-2011

Tegra 2 makes for a scary-fast smartphone As far as referendums on nVidia’s new Tegra 2 processor go, Motorola’s and AT&T’s Atrix 4G is a shining success. It throws off beastly performance and also manages to greatly reduce power consumption. However, when viewed as a referendum on the ARM architecture’s potential to scale up and supplant x86 in laptops and desktops—or even run Windows—the outlook isn’t quite as promising. First the basics. This is the fastest phone we’ve ever seen. In our CPU, GPU, and combined benchmarks, the 1 GHz dual-core Tegra 2 CPU and GeForce ULP GPU core helped the Atrix even beat Samsung’s very-fast Epic 4G in most of our tests. We admit that the Maximum PC Lab is just getting started on benchmarking phones, but it’s clear that Nvidia has ...

Updated: Apple iPad 2: our first impressions

By TechRadar, published 03-02-2011

Apple may have sold 15 million first-version iPads, but the company isn't resting on its laurels. Steve Jobs has just announced the iPad 2 in San Francisco and there will be a white version as well as a black one. But what do we think of it at first glance? However, iPad 2 isn't the extreme makeover many were expecting. The device costs the same as the current iPad ($499 in the US) and comes with the same 16, 32 and 64GB memory configurations. The iPad 2 UK release date is 25 March, so expect it to start from £439 as before, unless we're really going to get done over in the UK. The main physical thing is that the new iPad is thinner - 33 per cent thinner, clocking it at 8.8mm, or thinner than the iPhone 4 (which clocks in at 9.3mm). Wow. It looks incredible and has the expected front-faci...

Samsung S8530 Wave-II smartphone - The bigger and better wave [Review]

By Thinkdigit, published 03-02-2011

When the first version of the Samsung Wave smartphone was launched last year, it did create quite a bit of confusion. The issue being that despite churning out Android-based smartphones as well, Samsung had spent a lot of money on developing a smartphone operating system that essentially ended up competing with Android. The big question was whether Bada will survive as an OS and how patient will Samsung be in terms of developing the OS and the entire apps ecosystem around it. Some of those ques [...] Read the entire article

Review: HTC 7 Pro

Windows Phone 7 has been with us since last October, where the first flurry of handsets came quickly with a trio from HTC, the HD7, HTC 7 Mozart and HTC 7 Trophy being joined by the Samsung Omnia 7 and LG Optimus 7.Since then, things have been a little quiet on the hardware front, with the Dell Venue Pro only just surfacing. However, we anticipate the arrival of an update to the Windows Phone software very soon, and of course Nokia's recent announcement that it is joining forces with Microsoft on the smartphone front has turned heads. Now we've a new piece of hardware to gawk at too, the HTC 7 Pro. This is the first Windows Phone 7 smartphone to have a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and, as such, it is an obvious candidate for the businessperson. But if it's well designed and sleek enough, it m...

In Depth: Why 2011 is the year of mobile payments

Some providers, such as Fonwallet.com, are using software to initiate transactions. Some, such as Mpayy use text messaging as a way to buy goods on a website or send funds from one user to another.MPAYYMENTS: Using text messages to pay for goodsPhones such as the Nokia 6212 have the capability to conduct transactions using a Near-Field Communication chip, but have not made much progress beyond ...

Samsung Wave 525 ? entry level smartphone [review + video]

Review: Samsung Wave II GT-S8530

Samsung is clearly hedging its bets, because it's also very friendly with Android as we've seen in handsets like the Galaxy S and the Google-branded Nexus S, and with Windows Phone 7 as we've seen in the Omnia 7. There's plenty going on in terms of specifications in the Wave II. Headlining things along with a very slightly revised version of Bada is the Super Clear LCD 3.7-inch screen. Review: Nokia C6-01

Overview and designThe Nokia C6-01 is the cheapest Symbian^3 handset to date - it's a definite update to the likes of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and also comes with a relatively large amount of technology under the surface too considering its smaller dimensions.Considering that the Nokia C6-01 is the cheapest of the Symbian^3 offerings from Nokia at £279 direct from Nokia or free on contract, the build quality appears and feels more akin to that of some of it's E-Series predecessors, while its price tag is nearer that of the old Nokia 5800.The power button has been moved from the top of the device, as is usual on Nokia phones, to being combined with the Call End button. This could be initially confusing, but it improves the phones aesthetics. The first thing you note visually is the metal...
