In an age of powerful smart devices, many consumers still want cell phones that are "just phones." A perfectly fine example is the Samsung M360 ($19.99-209.99), a modest flip phone that feels well-built and sounds good on voice calls. It's far from the most exciting device we've tested. But it's a decent choice for anyone looking for a cheap cell phone on Sprint's main network. Sometimes, that's all a person needs. The Samsung M360 measures 3.9 by 1.9 by 0.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.6 ounces. It has comfy, soft-touch black back panel, and a glossy, royal blue front cover. The passive-matrix external LCD is reasonably informative. Flip the phone open and things improve further. The internal 2.2-inch screen sports a sharp 240-by-320-pixel resolution, vibrant color, and crisp fonts even in small sizes. The diamond-shaped, five-way control pad was a little weird, but it was accurate enough, and the UI responded quickly to button presses. The oversized numeric keypad is very easy to dial numbers on. The M360 is a dual-band EV-DO Rev 0 (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi. Voice quality was full and warm in the earpiece, and not as trebly as some other Sprint phones I've tested. The M360 also went deafeningly loud.
Samsung's Galaxy S series has won the manufacturer a lot of attention over the past few months, but Sammy hasn't ignored the basic phone market. Just take its new SPH-M360 for Sprint. Armed with satisfying call quality, a bright display, and a user-friendly design, the M360 does exactly what a cell phone should do. We wouldn't count on its camera, but it manages to pack in a couple of extra features, including voice dialing, accessibility options, and a loud speakerphone. And even better, it's free if you buy it online and sign a new service contract (the regular price is $209). Samsung's M360 comes about a year after its M330 and more than two years after the M320. Like those earlier handsets, the design of M360 doesn't go out of its way to impress with a loud color or flashing lights. It comes back to the flip phone fold--the M330 was a slider model--but its clean lines and royal blue color have a minimalist appeal. At 3.9 inches long by 1.9 inches wide by 0.7 inch deep, the handset is larger than many basic phones, but it still fits easily into a pocket. And at 3.6 ounces, it won't weight you down. The external display measures 0.92 inch on all sides and packs in all the information you'll need, including the date, time, battery life, and signal strength.
