Laptop Reviews: Compare PC and Mac Laptops and Netbooks

Samsung is becoming something of an expert in the field of blurring product boundaries, as after the Galaxy Note tablet-turned-smartphone, now here's the Slate PC XE700 tablet-turned-notebook. This 11.6 touchscreen device runs on Windows 7, has a low-power-consumption Intel Core i5 processor (as seen in the Apple 11.6-inch MacBook Air and the Asus UX21E ultrabook) and a 64 GB SSD. More than a mere tablet, the Slate PC comes bundled with accessories such as a stylus, a Bluetooth keyboard and a charging dock loaded with extra connection ports. Note that the Slate PC is pretty much guaranteed an upgrade to Windows 8 when it's released in 2012, as Samsung's hybrid tablet PC was, in fact, the test product sent to developers by Microsoft last autumn. The Slate PC XE700 is on sale now for around £1,000. Although it's an imposing and fairly heavy product, the Slate tablet's weight (just over 800 grammes) is evenly distributed. It also has a very high-end finish. The brushed aluminium on the back of the tablet helps keep heat under control and gives the Slate a stylish overall look. From the front, one of the first things we noticed about the tablet was that Samsung has applied a special finish to the glossy screen the help tone down reflections and glare.

Samsung Series 7 Slate (700T1A)

The Samsung Series 7 Slate PC looks like one of the numerous tablets on the market, but this one shows consumers that you don't have to sacrifice features and comfort to get a Windows tablet. Most of the Windows tablets we've seen have run 32-bit versions of Windows and utilized underpowered AMD and Intel Atom processors, which are essentially netbooks, sans keyboard. The Series 7 Slate, on the other hand, is every inch a functional PC, comparable to any current laptop. The result is a tablet that is easily twice the computer any of those Windows tablets are - but getting that power will cost you a pretty penny, with the bundled tablet, dock and keyboard selling for $1,349.99 (direct). The Series 7 Slate looks, for all intents and purposes, like an 11.6-inch display removed from a laptop. This size is stark in contrast to the many 10-inch tablets we've reviewed, like the Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 ($849 list, 4 stars), Acer Iconia Tab W500-BZ467 (549.99 direct, 3.5 stars), and Motion Computing CL900 ($1,125 list, 3.5 stars). Despite its larger size, the Series 7 Slate is lighter than many of these smaller tablets, weighing in at 1.9 pounds. Only the Fujitsu Q550 is lighter, at 1.87 pounds.

Samsung Series 7 Slate PC (XE700T1a-A03US) Review

The Samsung Series 7 Slate PC seeks to combine the portability of a tablet with the power of a laptop, hitting the sweet spot for business users who are constantly on the go. Equipped with a Core i5 processor and a 128GB solid state drive, this 11.6-inch device sports a touch-friendly interface from Samsung and Fast Start Technology to get you back to work in a flash. Our review model costs an expensive $1,349, but it includes a dock, wireless keyboard, and pen to boost your productivity. But is the Series 7 Slate worth nearly three times the price as the iPad?Click to EnlargeWeighting 1.8 pounds and measuring 11.6 x 7.2 x 0.5 inches, the Samsung Series 7 Slate is relatively heavy and thick for a tablet. For example, the iPad 2 measures just 0.3 inches thick and weighs 1.3 pounds. However, the Series 7 has a larger display--11.6 inches vs. 9.7 inches--so we can see some users being willing to trade the extra real estate for additional bulk. The good news is that the Series 7 Slate feels like a premium tablet.Similar to the latest line of Series 9 and Series 7 laptops, the Series 7 Slate's backside has a dark gray brushed-aluminum finish with a chrome Samsung insignia placed in the center. Three sets of vents run across the tablet's middle to ensure the device's components don't overheat.

Samsung Series 7 Slate 700T

With all the hype surrounding the new Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, and favorites such as the iPad 2 and Asus Transformer, it's easy to forget that there are still new Windows tablets hitting stores. In fact, Windows tablets have been around for years, both as low-key industrial tools and as disappointingly underpowered consumer products. Samsung has expanded its Series 7 line of products into tablet territory, calling its versions the Series 7 Slate 700T. Like the Asus EP121, it includes an Intel Core i5 processor, making it a much more useful device than the underpowered Intel Atom tablets that failed to impress us over the past few years. The downside is that both this and the Asus version are much more expensive than the current best-selling tablet, Apple's $500 iPad. That said, when combined with its optional Bluetooth keyboard and docking stand, the Series 7 Slate is a tidy, powerful package, but those extras will run you $180 on top of the system's premium $1,349 price. At least that includes a 128GB SSD drive. For $1,099, you can get the same machine with a smaller 64GB drive. The real competition here in one sense isn't the iPad, but the new generation of ultrabooks, which are thin, light, and just as powerful. Some, such as the Toshiba Portege Z835, also pack in a 128GB SSD, but for a lot less: $799.

Samsung Series 7 Slate PC

Tablets are the toast of the town right now, but we'd be lying if we said we'd ever found a Windows 7 tablet that struck us as particularly desirable -- the PC software just isn't designed for a touchscreen device. Samsung wants to change all that with the Series 7 Slate PC, a tablet with a powerful Core i5 processor, due out in October at £999.But will that be enough to tempt us away from the likes of the iPad and delicious Honeycomb tablets? We've gone hands-on, so read onwards for our first impressions.Aesthetically there's rather a lot to like about the Series 7 Slate. It's a big, bold rectangle that looks more businesslike than the rounded Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and along the back there's a selection of grey grilles that lend this tablet a slightly industrial sheen. It's 12.9mm thick, which isn't as thin as the iPad 2, but it didn't feel too chunky in our practiced palms. It is big though -- the screen measures 11.6 inches along the diagonal, so we'd hazard that holding this monster with one hand for lengthy periods will likely be out of the question. There's only one button, which bears the Windows logo and sits underneath the display, hinting at the Windows Home Premium OS lurking within. Meanwhile there's a 2-megapixel camera sitting pretty on the front, and a 3-megapixel rear-facing snapper.
