Product Survey: Mobiles & Smartphones

The Wave is its handset to run Bada, and is a high-end touchsreen smartphone which, if its spec is anything to go by, is cut out with social networking in mind. With the manufacturer's own Super AMOLED display, a fast 1 GHz processor (also designed in house) and the ability to both record and watch 720p HD video, it should be more than capable of keeping up with the current generation of smartphones—and even overtaking some. But is it up to the job? You certainly can't say that this is a Samsung phone that looks like all the rest. We're not surewhat's happened in their design department, but it's definitely a change for the better. In the past, the Korean manufacturer had a nasty habit of producing glossy plastic cases with dubious build quality, but the Wave, and its light grey brushed aluminum finish, is a picture of solidity. Given Samsung's target market, the finish was always going to have to be excellent, but we'd like to see how well the outside resists scratches over time. The new look is very much a pleasant surprise though, and we'd be only too pleased if this model was the first of a whole new generation from Samsung. We're not too demanding are we? The Wave is very easy to get hold of, thanks in no small part to the fact it only measures a trifling 11 mm from one side to the other.

Samsung Wave review

We've finally managed to get our hands on a final release unit of the Samsung Wave - and the good news is it's a darn sight better than the pre-production version we tested a few weeks ago, so read on to see the updated and final Samsung Wave review. The Korean firm has made the somewhat leftfield decision to launch its own OS and with the new Samsung Wave it gets a phone with top-notch hardware to debut it on.This isn't just another 'and me' Samsung phone – it's crammed to the hilt with high end features, such as HD video recording, a 1GHz Samsung-own Hummingbird processor, a super-slim chassis, the latest Super AMOLED screen and multi-touch support right out of the box. However, it's still rocking Samsung's TouchWiz overlay, which is great if you like Samsung phones, but a very different experience for those joining the Korean giant for the first time.So is this another middling handset from the firm that brought us more phones than we could shake a stick at last year, or is the Samsung Wave the first phone of a radical new dynasty? The first two things to note about the Samsung Wave are obvious: the build quality and the screen just cram style into your eyeballs. The phone is very slim at less than 11mm thick and the metallic build quality is apparent the second you hold it in your hand.

Samsung Wave S8500 Review

From its confusing launch back in December 2009, to its feature-packed handset debut at Mobile World Congress and then all the way to the SlashGear test bench today, Samsung's bada OS has had a rocky journey. Showing up for the first time on the Samsung Wave S8500, the new platform promises the flexibility of a smartphone OS with the easy usability of a feature-phone. That makes this a double review, perhaps: new platform, new phone. Does bada really have a future in the competitive cellphone market? In terms of hardware, there's plenty to like about the Wave S8500. Measuring a slender 10.9mm thick, the fascia is taken up by a 3.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, brighter than regular AMOLED, while there's a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus, 720p HD video recording, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. Otherwise it's the usual mixture of dualband (900/2100MHz) HSPA, quadband GSM/EDGE, a microSD card slot (augmenting 2GB or 8GB of internal storage, SKU depending), A-GPS and a 3.5mm headphone socket. Keeping things running is Samsung's own 1GHz Hummingbird processor, and the whole thing feels high-quality with a metallic chassis that's certainly more smartphone than it is feature-phone.

Samsung Wave S8500 Review

Samsung's first bada phone - the Samsung Wave S8500 - is finally here. A few months ago we reviewed a prototype unit, which left us with rather high expectations for the final product. Now that it's here, we are ready to see what Samsung's latest and greatest creation has to offer. Being a full-featured mobile platform however, bada will inevitably face some pretty strong competition in the form of BlackBerry, webOS, Android and iPhone OS. Or will it? According to Samsung, bada is the easy to use type of OS, which will combine the greatness of having rich 3rd-party apps with a user-friendly interface that would appeal to every average Joe out there. So bada is not that much of an opponent to BlackBerry and Windows Phone, than it is to the iPhone, webOS and Android. Congrats, Samsung, you just painted some really tough future for yourself. The manufacturer's vision is well-represented by its slogan "smartphone for everyone". Well, a bada smartphone for everyone is no doubt what every Samsung executive envisions, but as of now this is surely more of a dream than it is a reality.

Samsung S8500 Wave review: Hello, world!

Smartphone for the masses or feature phone of the future? Samsung would gladly have it either way. The question rather is, will the Bada OS keep up the pace of its debut device. We?ve been following the new smart platform since its first public appearance. It?s not a particularly hard one to follow anyway, with a single phone announced so far and potential successors of the Samsung S8500 Wave only a whisper of a rumor. It will certainly take more ? and equally convincing ? devices for Bada to do as well as Samsung want it to. Proper developer support and a fast growing app store will be a must too. So, it?ll take hard work but there?s something to be optimistic about ? the firstborn is promising. OK, cautiously optimistic is more like it with Android, Windows Phone 7 or Symbian ^3 predators lurking around. We?re about to see what the Samsung S8500 Wave is really capable of. We?re getting ready to enjoy it. The S8500 Wave did well in our preview and - fingers crossed - unpleasant surprises are not on today?s menu. The OS is trying to combine feature-phone ease of use with the versatility of smartphones.

Samsung Wave S8500

The Samsung Wave is full of contradictions. As the flagship smartphone for the manufacturer's bada open-source operating system it has a few teething problems, but nevertheless it's a powerful, good-looking device with top-notch social networking features. When it comes to appearance, the Samsung Wave has lots to recommend it. You can't fail to notice its ‘super-AMOLED' display: a clean, bright screen that looks amazing. The ‘super' is put into AMOLED by using fewer layers of glass and bringing the LED lights closer to the surface of the screen, meaning that reflection and glare are reduced significantly, even in direct sunlight. The 3.3-inch screen – which sits well in the slim, aluminium alloy and plastic device, is made of tempered glass and feels smooth when you swipe it. In fact, it's Samsung's best capacitive screen so far: quick, accurate and responsive. Even the keyboard, traditionally a sticking point with Samsung phones, feels superb. Auto-correct works well, although more obscure words will need a little more clicking as you cannot insert a new word without adding it to the dictionary first. Annoyingly, you have to switch over to a symbols screen even to add a full stop, and pressing the space bar doesn't automatically take you back to the main keyboard.

Samsung S8500 Wave preview: First look

Enter a new platform. With a boom. With a bang. A Bada kind of bang. Another of the big guns wants to play by their own rules. Samsung?s second spot in global market share was hard fought but it will be a while before they as much as wish the same for the Bada. They?ve been a consistent innovator over the last couple of years but getting baby Bada up and running must be quite a challenge. The Samsung S8500 Wave is Bada?s carrier vessel and it certainly looks interesting. It seems to have the right thing to make it newsworthy: slim profile and an absolutely gorgeous screen. But is it enough to make it a success? Over the past years new touchscreen platforms have been spreading like wildfire but not all of them have managed to catch on as well as their developers must have been hoping. Android fares well but still hasn?t quite overcome its growing pains, while the well settled Symbian platform is still coming to terms with touchscreen. The S8500 Wave is among the best spec?d Samsung phones we?ve seen and it seems every aspect of the overall performance will have to pull its weight. Samsung are keen to focus attention on the young Bada OS, and that might as well bear future fruit. However, if the young platform fails to perform as expected, its shortcomings will be harder to forgive.
