Samsung Replenish

The Samsung Replenish joins Boost Mobile's network as its most affordable Android phone. Originally released for Sprint last spring, Boost's Replenish has Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a portrait QWERTY keyboard to complement its touch screen, and Mobile ID. The eco-conscious set can rest assured that it's made from recycled materials. Apart from that, it's a basic Android device, and there's plenty to pick on. However, the keyboard and pricing help round out Boost's smartphone portfolio. The handset costs $99.99 off-contract. Portions of this review were taken from the Sprint version of the Samsung Replenish. From a distance, the Samsung Replenish looks like a knockoff BlackBerry, with its smallish touch screen topping a vertical QWERTY keyboard. Like its rivals, the Replenish is also black, with silver accents. It's also tall, standing 4.8 inches high by 2.4 inches wide by 0.5 inch thick, and it weighs 4.1 ounces, which feels about right in the hand, although the device felt a tad blocky on the ear. The Replenish has a 2.8-inch QVGA touch screen with a 240x320-pixel resolution and support for 16 million colors. As low as the resolution is compared with premium and proprietary offerings like Sasmsung's Super AMOLED and HD Super AMOLED screens, it's appropriate for the phone's screen size.

Samsung Replenish

The Samsung Replenish, Sprint's first eco-friendly Android cell phone, is a relatively rare beast: a BlackBerry-like, slab-style Android phone with a physical keyboard. The world needs more of those, and the Replenish's green cred helps add to its attraction. But it's too sluggish, with short battery life and an awful low-res screen, and we just can't recommend it to anyone for those reasons. The Replenish measures 4.8 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.1 ounces. It's made entirely of plastic; I tested a black version, although you can also get one that has the lower keyboard portion in bright blue. Sprint is promising a pink version for June. While the phone itself doesn't feel cheap, the plastic 2.8-inch touch screen is awful. It's too small, it's unresponsive, and it's too dim, with flat colors. Worse, its 240-by-320-pixel (QVGA) resolution is cramped and tough to read. Small text always looks fuzzy. Four thin, plastic buttons sit in between the screen and the keyboard. These are tough to press and wobbled a bit in their perches when I tried. The single biggest advantage of this form factor is the four-row QWERTY keyboard, sitting right out in the open ready to be typed on. The keys felt a little gummy and chintzy, but I could type on it relatively quickly.

Samsung Replenish Review

When it comes to technology, there’s no arguing that cell phone manufacturers are at the cutting edge, but there are still very few that are mindful about being eco-friendly in terms of production and distribution. So far, Sprint seems to be one of the more prevalent carriers offering green-friendly devices on its lineup – but up until now, we’ve been presented with nothing more than simple QWERTY based messaging phones. Happily, the affordable Samsung Replenish SPH-M580 is finally here not only carrying along some environmentally friendly initiatives with its production, but it also brings Android goodness in the form of a portrait style QWERTY device. Affordably priced at $50 on-contract, let’s hope that the experience is acceptable for this eco-conscious entry-level smartphone. The recycled package contains:Almost just as hefty as some landscape style QWERTY devices out there, like the Samsung Transform, the Samsung Replenish is extraordinarily longer than some of its brethren. Still, it’s manageable to hold in the hand without feeling too unwieldy, though, its recycled black plastic exterior radiates somewhat of a cheap feel – yet, it’s helping out the environment either way.

Samsung Replenish

Environmentally friendly, "green" phones started popping up about two years ago, with the debut of the Samsung Blue Earth and Sony Ericsson GreenHeart feature phones in the summer of 2009. Initially I thought the idea was a bit of a gimmick. But here we are in 2011, and the green phone has made a comeback in the form of the Samsung Replenish ($50 with a two-year Sprint contract as of May 5, 2011). Running Android 2.2, the Replenish is one of the first ecofriendly smartphones. Unfortunately, allthough you might feel like a better person for buying an ecofriendly phone, the Replenish is largely underwhelming. Keeping true to its identity as a green phone, the Replenish is constructed with "reduced environmentally sensitive materials," according to Sprint. That is, its materials are free of polyvinyl chloride and phthalates, beryllium, and brominated flame retardants. If that means nothing to you, don't worry--you're not alone. Basically, the Replenish meets the European Union's Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, which limits the use of certain chemicals and materials in electronics. Furthermore, the Replenish's casing includes 34.6 percent postconsumer recycled plastic content; according to Sprint and Samsung, 82 percent of the phone is made from recyclable materials.
