With Carphone Warehouse promising that the Galaxy S3 Mini "brings the high performance and ease-of-use of the Galaxy S3 to a compact smartphone" and Phones 4U declaring it a "perfect new addition to the family," users looking for a more compact or more affordable version of the Galaxy S3 may think that the Mini is the perfect solution! However, this isn't really a case of like father like son, as the Galaxy S3 Mini doesn't actually have all that much in common with the full-sized Galaxy S3. Seeing as this Mini mobile is widely advertised as a pint-sized Galaxy S3, we'll be regularly comparing the two handsets throughout this review. Given the look of this handset, its product reference and all the marketing information that surrounds it, it's hard not to see this phone as a more compact version of the Galaxy S3. While this handset is smaller than the full-sized Galaxy S3 (although it is thicker) its overall design is very similar. However, its tech specs have been scaled down considerably. The evocative name may therefore prove a little misleading in this instance. So let's take a look at a few of those key tech specs.
The announcement that Samsung has sold the most phones, and in particular more than double the amount of iPhones, will no doubt be of little shock. The Samsung Galaxy S3 was the most popular selling smartphone in Q3 2012, following in the footsteps of its older brother, the now 18 month-old Samsung Galaxy S2.One of the secrets of Samsung's success has to be the quality of its devices, but another is that it has targeted every corner of the market. The Samsung Galaxy range has hit every price point, from the super-budget Galaxy Y to the highest end phablet Galaxy Note 2, and the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini here falls somewhere in the middle.Samsung will look to the success of the Galaxy S3, as the Galaxy S3 Mini - also referred to as the Galaxy SIII Mini - comes up against the newly launched LG made Google Nexus 4, that has completely rewritten the book for mid-priced smartphones. It also faces some stiff competition from more established handsets such as the HTC One S, and the ageing yet still very popular Samsung Galaxy S2. Remarkably, like the Nexus 4, the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini comes in with a similar spec sheet as the iPhone 5.
Just as the Galaxy S2 got the Galaxy S Advance as its cheaper, slightly more basic mini-me, the S3 has now been joined in Samsung's smart phone line-up by the S3 Mini. Naturally, the S3 Mini is much cheaper than its big brother, and you can nab one SIM Free for around £300, while the S3 floats around closer to the £400 mark. The two phones seem to be miles apart in terms of hardware, however, so we were keen to see if the naming scheme was anything more than just a clever bit of marketing on Samsung's part. The S3 Mini looks very much like a shrunken S3, and sports many of the same design flourishes as its big brother. These can be noticed in the curve of the battery cover, the rounded corners and the silver trim that runs around the outer edge. Internally, it's a completely different beast though, using a slower, inferior 1GHz dual-core processor. Nevertheless, it still feels pretty slick and speedy, mainly because it's running the new Jelly Bean version of Android, which is the slickest and smoothest iteration of Google's operating system to date. Elsewhere, the Mini's specifications don't help it distinguish itself among mid-range Android phones. Its screen is only average, and the camera is pretty pedestrian too.
Samsung's Galaxy S III is an impressive powerhouse, and now Samsung has brought out a smaller version – dubbed appropriately the Galaxy S III Mini, aimed firmly at the middle of the market. The Mini's big brother has a 4.8in screen and a quad-core processor, while the Mini has been scaled down to a 1GHz dual-core chip and a four-inch display. Not bad if you're not really on the lookout for a superphone – but you're probably also hoping that the price is suitably reduced. Well, with the Mini coming in at 300 SIM-free (rather than its older sibling's 382) it's not much of a saving. On the plus side, the S III Mini offers one of the first and cheapest opportunities to use the Android Jelly Bean operating system. Finding your way around the phone is easy and quick, while it is quite capable of multitasking apps such as YouTube and Maps. The screen proves smooth and responsive, although we weren't so enamoured with the onscreen keyboard. Because the screen is a little smaller at four inches, the keyboard feels squashed, and the autocorrect is rather disappointing too.
Samsung has decided that it can milk more from the success of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and has punted out a lower-power little brother.Coming in without the quad-core power, the higher-spec battery or the huge screen with the impressive HD resolution, the Samsung Galaxy S3 mini is still a decent phone in its own right, with 1GB of RAM, a microSD card slot and the exact same styling as its predecessor, albeit in a much smaller form factor. However, coupled with a 300 price tag, you can see that the lack of high end features is going to hurt a device like this, especially when it's got the likes of the Google Nexus 4 to contend with at that price bracket now.The interface on the Samsung Galaxy S3 mini is impressive though, as it comes with Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean out of the box, bringing with it the likes of a renewed notification bar and improved smoothness under the finger. It's clear that despite only running a dual-core CPU there's not much to really complain about, at least in our initial tests. We swiped, added and removed widgets and saw no hint of slowdown or something to say that the lack of grunt was going to hurt it.Adding in 1GB of RAM is a decent choice, seeing as that takes it to the level of its bigger brother, and you could argue that the S3 mini is actually more powerful than the all-conquering Samsung Galaxy S2, which is still selling well.
Although the overall tendency for screen sizes of Android handsets is to go up, it seems phone makers aren't willing to forget about the not so tech-savvy users who would actually prefer having a more compact device. The Samsung Galaxy S III mini is a perfect example. It's designed to bring most of the goodies of the Galaxy S III in a significantly smaller form-factor. However, the S III mini is more intriguing than your typical mid-range model, as it has the privilege of being named after one of the best and most popular Android phones around. When we first caught wind of the S III mini, many thought that it'll still be a very high-end model, only with a smaller screen size. Now that all about the device is known, some seem to be disappointed by the phone's mid-range specs. To tell you the truth, we don't know why that is. We feel that the Galaxy S III mini is an awesome 4” smartphone with a lot of potential and very few flaws. Let's examine it closely and see where it excels and where it falls short!Design:Isn't it obvious? The Samsung Galaxy S III mini's appearance is super-inspired by its bigger sibling, the Galaxy S III. If you don't look closely, you might even think that the S III mini is simply a shrunken version of the GS III, but that would be wrong.
The Samsung I8190 Galaxy S III mini is like a nostalgic return to the roots for the highly successful Galaxy S franchise. Quite similar to the original Galaxy S specs-wise, the new SIII mini aims to get as much of the Galaxy S III's personality into a smaller package that's easy on the thumb - and pocket. The original Samsung Galaxy S III is currently the smartphone to beat, but to many it's too large of a slab to handle. A strong point can be made that a large screen is a must for a great browsing experience or video watching on the go, but not everyone is willing to put up a with the body size such a screen implies. The Galaxy SIII mini is ready to deal a serious blow to the competition in the midrange, by offering a more compact (and cheaper!) way to get the premium smartphone experience. An ambitious goal it is, but Samsung isn't afraid of a challenge. Actually, the spec sheet is not even half as exciting as the SIII's. The mini version has the unmistakable styling of the flagship but that's about where it stops. At first glance, it's much closer to the original Galaxy S. In fact, it looks like Samsung is merely publishing a remastered version of their 2010 hit single.
Today Samsung globally launched the rumored Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, a smaller version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 that hit shelves globally in May, and arrived in the U.S. this summer on five separate carriers. In addition to having a more petite 4-inch screen and build than the Samsung Galaxy S3, the S3 Mini also scales back the specs to make the Mini a more middle-of-the road option. Samsung's original Galaxy S3 serves as its flagship premium model; in the S3 Mini, Samsung has the opportunity to flush its design and brand into the midtier markets and emerging markets. Although Samsung didn't announce pricing or availability with this worldwide announcement, the asking price is sure to come in lower than its larger, more powerful cousin. You know times have changed when a relatively high-powered smartphone with a 4-inch screen is known as "mini." The S3 Mini comes with a 4-inch Super AMOLED WVGA resolution display (800x480 pixels,) and Samsung says the screen has a curved design. While less pixel-dense than the 4.8-inch Galaxy S3 -- the Mini has 233 pixels per inch where the full-size S3 has 305.96 ppi -- the Mini's screen resolution is still well within range for a 4-inch screen.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is arguably the best smart phone ever devised, sporting a monumental 4.8-inch screen, a gleaming oval design and a processor that could kill a hippo with its enormous strength. Samsung clearly knows the value of its flagship phone too, because it's slapping the S3 moniker on a new, smaller Android mobile. This mid-range device is unlikely to offer performance on a par with its bigger brother, but hey -- it is likely to be much cheaper. Read on for everything you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini ahead of its release, and bookmark this page if you're keen, because before long we'll be replacing this preview with a full, in-depth review with a star rating. The S3 Mini looks -- as you'd expect -- like a slightly smaller Galaxy S3. The phone itself has a rounded oval shape, with one near-rectangular home button nestled just under the 4-inch display. Unfortunately, while the Mini is smaller than the Galaxy S3, it's actually slightly thicker, measuring 9.85mm thick, compared with the S3's 8.6mm. That's hardly too chubby to handle and this phone will definitely fit inside your pocket with no trouble.
