Samsung I9103 Galaxy R review: Riding shotgun

The Samsung I9103 Galaxy R rode in on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform and became the first affordable dual-core smartphone from the South Korean company. With a bright SC-LCD screen and brushed metal back, the Galaxy R is just different enough from the Galaxy S lineup to stand on its own. Samsung has so many variations of their models that sometimes it's hard to say when one model starts and where another begins. Take the Samsung I9103 Galaxy R, positioned somewhere between the Galaxy S II flagship droid and the mid-range Galaxy W. Not that we're complaining - having more options available is always a good thing and all dual-core droids from Samsung were only top of the line so far (S II and its variations, the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy Note phoneblet). This is where the I9103 Galaxy R steps in in - it offers tangibly better specs than the Galaxy W, while staying a step below the top dogs in specs and price. Here's a summary of what you get with the Galaxy R and some downsides. Depending on how you look at it, going from the Galaxy W to the Galaxy R means getting a better CPU and GPU, a bigger screen and extra built-in storage, or trading in several of the highlights of the Galaxy S II in exchange for a smaller total at the cash register.

Samsung Galaxy R Review

That the Samsung GALAXY S II is the most attractive device in the company's stables is something that cannot be questioned. In terms of sales, Samsung's flagship has been passing milestone after milestone, and as of today, more than 10 million units have flown off the shelves. But there is one device that combines a pretty similar set of features, yet comes a tad cheaper than the GALAXY S II. We are talking, of course, about the Samsung Galaxy R, which we have in our hands today. The Samsung Galaxy R is more or less a downgraded version of the company's finest smartphone. It passes on the 1.2 GHz Exynos SoC in favor of NVIDIA's Tegra 2 chip, the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display has been replaced with a marginally smaller 4.2-inch Super Clear LCD screen, and the camera on its back has been taken from 8 down to 5 megapixels. Besides, the otherwise plastic back of the Galaxy R has been treated to a nice metallic finish, which we actually find to be an improvement over the plastic feel of the GALAXY S II.So, without any further ado, let us now take the second best player in team Samsung for a spin and see what goodies it has to offer. The package contains:The Samsung Galaxy R feels nice and solid, but it isn't quite as sexy as its bigger brother.

Samsung Galaxy R Preview

The Samsung Galaxy R (also known as I9103) is the first handset to walk in the shoes of the Samsung Galaxy S II. A slightly stripped down version of Samsung's flagship, it wears similar looks, packs an equally powerful core and only downgrades the camera to 5 megapixels. Actually, the Galaxy R is the first of many other versions of the S II that we expect to follow – just as was the case with the original Galaxy S, which got a separate version for each major US carrier. The Galaxy R on its part is said to hit a couple of European markets including the UK, and come with a slightly cheaper price tag.Packing a slightly smaller, 4.2” display than the S II, the Galaxy R also comes with a new processor – dual-core Tegra 2 replaces Samsung's 1.2GHz Exynos. Additionally, Samsung has done a bit of redesign – while the S II could compete with the thinnest and lightest smartphones in the world, at the same time being made out of plastic, the Galaxy R feels solid, crafted out with both metal and plastic, all coming in a body that's a hair thicker. Size Visualization ToolBefore we look deeper at the device, though, we should note that we tested a prototype unit, so both and software are . We've seen renders of the Galaxy R showing that up front the final version might look much like the original Galaxy S II.The handset looks and feels solid.

Samsung I9103 Galaxy Z preview: First look

The Galaxy S lineup is no stranger to versioning - the original Galaxy S relied on half a dozen different editions to achieve its market success. Its successor will obviously take a similar path as we just got its first body double in the face of the Samsung I9103 Galaxy Z. With Tegra 2 stepping in for the Exynos chipset and SC-LCD taking the place of the new generation SuperAMOLED Plus, the Galaxy S Z should be covering for the cases when the Galaxy S II is just slightly out of budget, while at the same time saving on the precious AMOLED panels. Now, the Samsung I9100 is obviously a winning formula so Samsung should be extra careful with any changes that it introduces. Tegra 2 is a fine alternative to Exynos and we already know what kind of performance to expect. We've seen the switch to SC-LCD before ? with the I9003 Galaxy SL. With the numbers the SuperAMOLED Plus packing I9100 is selling, it's no surprise that Samsung will try to sell a few units that don't use up their scarce SuperAMOLED recourses. We've summarized the specs of the Samsung I9103 Galaxy Z to get you acquainted with the device quickly, so we can move on to the fun stuff.
