For some, it probably seems as though that long-awaited Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update will never make it to their devices. Samsung Galaxy Note owners have reason to be optimistic, however, as some users in Europe have received that pop-up notification letting them know that it’s their turn. The update has appeared in Germany,...

Now we've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for this update to finally come. We even braved to try a leaked ROM to see how ICS would feel like on the Note. What can we say, even the Cyanogen team managed to produce a custom ICS ROM for the device before the manufacturer. Never mind, the important thing is that the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Samsung Galaxy Note is finally seeding to...

Greek tech site DigitalLife got hold of an Xperia P ahead of its launch and decided to put it through a number of benchmarks to see what its chipset is made of. The ST-Ericsson U8500 chipset should, in theory, be quite similar to the Exynos 4210 found inside the Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung Galaxy S II. They all feature a couple of Cortex-A9 cores (although the Galaxy devices have a slight...

Samsung has been intensely promoting its Galaxy Note phoneblet ever since its announcement, and it looks like it might finally make its way to T-Mobile. Overview At £150, the ViewSonic ViewPad 7e is a low-priced 7-inch Android 2.3 tablet that some might find appealing if only for the flexibility it affords. Similar to the BlackBerry PlayBook in size, with a passing nod to the upcoming (but still not available in the UK) Amazon Kindle Fire, the ViewPad 7e is not nearly as user-friendly. Overview, design and feelAfter playing it cool for a few years, RIM has apparently decided that there's something to this touchscreen phone lark after all, releasing a budget all-touch device in the shape of the BlackBerry Curve 9380. In the last few months we've seen a touchscreen added to the Bold in the form of the BlackBerry Bold 9900, an update to the Torch line in the BlackBerry Torch 9810, and a new, all-touch addition to the Torch family in the BlackBerry Torch 9860. Now it's the Curve family's turn, even though we thought it was doing fine without touch in our BlackBerry Curve 9360 review. Instead of taking the Bold route and adding touch capability to the screen above the keyboard, RIM has been somewhat more aggressive with the BlackBerry Curve 9380. The keyboard's gone completel...

Do you even need a tablet? If so, which one? We review the current crop of tablet mainstays. We explain the hardware and OS features that matter the most. Follow along as we unravel what tablets are actually good for. When a consumer electronics category confuses the masses, it’s usually because the technology is hard to understand on a fundamental level. Have you ever tried to explain texture fill rates to your GPU-ignorant brother-in-law? Or RAID levels to your mom—who shouldn’t even be asking about RAID in the first place? Videocards and storage devices can confuse the lay consumer, but at least the prospective hardware buyer usually knows he or she needs a videocard or storage device in the first place. Your game won’t play at a high resolution? A new videocard is probably the...

At Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) launch event, the new Face Unlock feature was called ‘beta’, and it turns out with good reason. At a recent Samsung demo event, one reviewer had the chance to play with the Galaxy Nexus and test out the Face Unlock feature. After setting up the device to recognize him and unlock the phone, he was able to unlock the device with a picture of himself on a second phone. Oops. Users have been wondering if this was possible, or if Google had worked out some sort of fix for this ago-old facial recognition problem. The demo filmed by the blogger was quite striking, with the device unlocking almost immediately. Clearly, this is not meant to be an ironclad security method. it is important to note that there are currently a few different builds of ICS runnin...

There are compromises to get it down to that low price, though. The screen is a modest 3.2 inches in size, plus there's no flash attached to the Huawei Blaze's 3.2MP camera. But on the positive side, there's a front-facing second camera for video chat support, and you get Android 2.3.4 as your operating system, with Huawei generously enabling users to deactivate its user interface tweaks and run the phone as a relatively untouched Google device if they prefer. Overview, design and feelIt's been a busy old year for Sony Ericsson. As it struggles to regain a foothold in the market it was once sucha major player in, it's been firing out more Android-based Xperia smartphones than long-lost relatives on an episode of Jeremy Kyle. And they're not half bad either. The Xperia Arc has been the flagship of 2011's bunch. Arriving in the spring, it became the skinny poster girl for the Swedish-Japanese hybrid, showing off its amazing screen presence with the help of the Sony Reality Display (the bit that reproduces colour on the screen and makes it look great) but in the Xperia Ray, Sony Ericsson has gone for a smaller model. Before we go any further, there is one point we have to make clear: this phone is small. With the Samsung Galaxy Fit you might think Samsung has added some fitness-related goodness to the phone. But no. Yes 3D looks spectacular and yes it's going to be expensive - €2299 (£2023) to be precise. But the most impressive thing about this telly is the contrast. It's absolutely fantastic. Philips claims the contrast ratio is 15,000,000:1 which would make it the blackest and also the brightest TV at the show. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 might be the first Super AMOLED Plus-screened tablet to launch, but it was beaten into second place here at IFA 2011 by its littler sibling, the Samsung Galaxy Note. Normally this tab would have stolen the show – it's just 7.89mm thick like the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The most remarkable thing about Samsung's latest gen tablets is that they seem light years ahead of the original Samsung Galaxy Tab that debuted at last year's IFA. Of course, there have been two major advances for Android tablets since then. The first, Android Honeycomb. The second, dual-core processors. Both are in evidence here (Android 3.2) in what is a remarkable device weighing just 335g. Gartner has released its report into mobile phone sales for Q2 2011, revealing that Android is now the top selling OS.The results show that the Google-made OS increased its market share to 43 per cent from 17 per cent last year, while Apple hit 18 per cent – not bad considering the sheer volume of Android handsets compared to iOS phones. Nokia also managed to cling on to the top manufacturing spot, although its share has fallen to 22 per cent of the market thanks to sales of 97.87 million smartphones in the three months from April to June. Top of the pops Gartner notes that the Finnish company has managed to "reduce levels of held stock, partly by cutting prices on older products", a tactic that has helped it keep the top spot. It's bad news for RIM and Windows Phone though; RIM saw its ...

We've managed to nab some time with a weird new phone: the Samsung Galaxy S Plus. We're not sure that we can even call it a new phone, as it's essentially the Samsung Galaxy S with a slight tweak under the hood. The phone itself bears a striking resemblance to the original Galaxy S - it's the same chassis if we're honest, apart from the fact the rim around the edge is now a glossy chrome rather than the darker silver offering we were treated to before. The rest of the phone is almost identical, with the weight ever so slightly lower than its predecessor, which sadly means no flash on the 5MP camera... still. It's unforgivable really to have a phone that will cost towards the higher end of the scale without this basic feature. The operation of the Samsung Galaxy S Plus is noticeably faster tha...

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 comes as something of a shock. You see, for years, BlackBerry has, in a sense, been catching up. That's not a dig at its parent company – it's practically royalty in push email and corporate handset circles. But it has been rare for RIM to lead the way. Cameras, internet browsing, HTML emails – all were included on RIM's phones years after they'd become standard fare on other handsets. For recent examples of decent phones that didn't really push the envelope all that far, just take a look at the Bold 9780 and 9700.But the Bold 9000 finally offers some cutting-edge tech, and in an attractive package to boot. Its 1.2GHz processor, high-spec touchscreen, brand new OS7 and HD video camera are all specs we never really expected a BlackBerry to have before the next m...

Apple is suing Motorola in Germany over the design of the Motorola Xoom and its similarities to the iPad, according to small print another court case. The notes were spotted in Apple's complaint against Samsung over the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which saw sales of Samsung's tablet suspended in Europe as the courts granted Apple a preliminary injunction. The Motorola Xoom could go the way of the Tab 10.1 in Europe if the courts rule in favour of Apple again, although the notes do not clarify whether Apple has requested an injunction in this case. Xoom, and the tablet's goneThe Motorola Xoom has another thing in common with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1; both tablets run Android Honeycomb. Apple isn't shy about going after its Android-running competitors; but with the iPad such a runaway success, it do...

HTC has released an Android 2.3 update for the HTC Desire, but it might not be the Android 2.3 update for the HTC Desire that you're looking for.In the note announcing the update on the HTC UK Facebook page, the company notes that "this update is only recommended for expert users who want to experience Android 2.3." That's because only the ROM upgrade utility for connecting the phone to a computer (RUU) is being made available rather than a traditional software update over the air (you know, the one where the phone tells you there's an update available). The upshot of this is anyone updating their software will need a spot of technological know-how and will lose any message, emails, customisations and contacts stored on their phone. Back in 2008, Apple was getting a lot of flack for not launching a cheap netbook. With the recession starting to bite, netbook sales were booming, but Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, seemed unimpressed. "The market is just getting started – we'll see how it goes," he said in his characteristically enigmatic style. Then, after a long period of inactivity, Apple launched the iPad, and now nobody is talking about netbooks anymore. Tablets are the device du jour that everybody wants to own. This month AppleInsider.com reported on speculation that Apple will sell between 40 million and 45 million iPads in 2011. What makes one tablet a winner and another a bucket of bolts? Let's start with a story. Once upon a time, there was a little English company called Acorn Computers. Through the early 1980s, it had quite a bit of success with an 8-bit home computer named the BBC Micro. You may remember it. For a replacement, Acorn decided that none of the then-available processors - such as the Motorola 68000 and Intel 80286 - were suitable. So it decided to make its own, as you do. The year was 1985 and Acorn developed a 25,000 transistor RISC processor called the ARM v1. It used it to power the now defunct Archimedes computer, and that same ARM core - with a few enhancements - is what now powers more than 75 per cent of all embedded 32-bit devices made in the 21st century, 90 per cent of all mobiles in th...

In the contest to replace your laptop – and maybe even your TV – Android 3.0 tablets such as the Motorola Xoom are ganging up on the Apple iPad 2 by sheer quantity. Now it's time for the Acer Iconia Tab A500's day in the sun.In many ways, this is all about the operating system, so we'll admit that the differences between the three main Android 3.0 tabs are marginal at best. You have to choose your OS poison wisely – the iPad 2 is better for music, movies and games, and it has better quality apps and more of them. This is the big announcement above all other announcements, that everyone attending the conference would be getting a device of some great significance. This is the big deal, the huge one that makes for the future of the platform, the device given out is the one that takes the cake for the rest of the year – so what is it? A Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, a fully functional one, for every single one of the 5,000 attendees of the conference. Are you excited? If you’re there, you definitely should be. This is the icing on the cake for one of the most massively packed keynotes in the history of the world, one that showed 100 million activations and 4.5 billion installs of Android. One that showed off Android Honeycomb 3.1. One that announced Android Ice Cream Sandwich. One that showed...

Monday the 9th of May 2011 and Google I/O has started with an early gift to us all! It’s the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, a device we got a very early hands-on with at CTIA 2011. When we were allowed to take that particular hands-on trip with the tablet (and its slightly smaller sibling) the device wasn’t yet a working unit. It was just sitting pretty and empty with a separate tablet device made for showing off Samsung’s new TouchWiz UX, a mobile operating system set to come out next to TouchWiz 4.0 as a tablet-specific version of Samsung’s signature overlay for Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Today we get to see a white version of the 10.1 Galaxy tablet with fully functional guts! It’s a real treat to have a look at an Android tablet that trumps even the iPad 2 for thin...

It’s no secret that the iPad is the most popular tablet out there right now. But the key words there are “right now”. The iPad had a year’s head start, and created the current tablet market that so many others are now rushing to join. A survey by the Nielsen company this spring shows that the iPad has an 82% market share of tablets in the U.S. 43% of iPad owners have the 3G version, and 39% have the Wi-Fi only tablet. The closest competitor was the Samsung Galaxy Tab, though it’s hard to call 4% “close”. No doubt the iPad is a great tablet. We on SlashGear have called it the best on the market. But will that still be true next year? And what impact are tablets having on the way we use our other devices? In the survey, the next most popular tablet...

Microsoft's been pushing tablet computers for the best part of a decade, so you can imagine how happy the iPad's success makes them. But Microsoft doesn't give up easily, and Windows 8 tablets are apparently imminent. So what's Steve Ballmer going to be shouting about when he shows them off?Windows 8 tablets' release date isn't imminentIn December 2011, the New York Times wrote that Microsoft would unveil tablets running Windows 8 at CES 2011 in January. The NYT credited an unnamed source for the leak, which suggests that Microsoft's keynote will be enlivened by the arrival of the next generation of Windows, as well as Samsung and Dell tablets. As it turned out, no Windows 8 tablets were shown at the show. However, the Windows 8 release date may be sooner than you think, with a beta in summe...

Welcome to this week’s edition of the SlashGear Week in Review. We had some interesting things going on in the tech world during the week. One of the interesting stories was the white iPhone and if it was thicker or not. Apple’s Phil Schiller insists that the white iPhone is no thicker than the black one, but it does use a different sensor and camera design. The biggest news in the world this week was the fact that Osama Bin Laden was killed. One man unknowingly tweeted about the raid when it was going on mentioning a helicopter hovering, which wasn’t usual. Apple whipped out a new version of the iMac AIO computer this week. The machine gained Thunderbolt, Intel Sandy Bridge processors and FaceTime HD video chatting among other things. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet ...

Behold a fine few days of wonder! This edition of The Daily Slash I’d like to take you on a journey of the more important (or otherwise featured) items we’ve had happen this week. There’s been an above-average amount of hands-on opportunities this week, and I want to make sure you don’t miss a single one of them. Then there’s the ongoing epic with Sony and their gaming network (hacks galore!) some fresh new earth-shattering games for Android, and oh my goodness, a whole new generation of iMac for your personal enjoyment. So very large! I want to begin by running down Chrome news of late – and the following goes back further than this past week, so beware: Google Launches Chrome 11, the beginning of the future with a whole new flattened icon. A couple o...

T-Mobile USA has announced its Q1 2011 results, and the numbers don’t look great. Net customer losses hit 99,000 while revenue flatlined from Q1 2010 at $4.63bn; however, despite ARPU (average revenue per user) remaining steady at $46, overall income dived from $362m in Q1 2010 to $135m in Q1 2011. That contrasts sharply with Verizon and AT&T, both of whom had relatively strong first quarters. T-Mobile did see data revenue rise 20-percent compared to the same period a year ago, though that’s less than the 22.3- and 23.9-percent rise of Verizon and AT&T respectively. Part of the reason for T-Mobile’s declining income is that the cost of acquiring each customer rose, up $10 year-on-year to $310 per subscriber, which the carrier reckons was predominantly down to in...

This morning, we are looking forward to the Samsung Event at 4pm EST. Will it be the Infuse? Will they announce a date for the Galaxy S II for the US? The hot new phone has been selling like crazy in South Korea, and our review unit knocked our socks off. We’ll be sure to let you know what happens at the event. Meanwhile, Samsung has revealed a “hybrid tablet” with SENS-240 navigation. But how useful is it, really? The incomparable Chris Davies has a great column this morning analyzing Verizon’s Bliss “phone for ladies”. Really Verizon? Aren’t we ladies smart enough to download our own apps? Also, Acer news, ARM chips, Microsoft denying updates and taking on Apple (again), the NOOKcolor 3G, Anonymous and other hackers, and much more after the cut. ...

ASUS has been plugging away at tablets for years now, experimenting with convertible netbooks and trying to coax some semblance of finger-friendliness out of Windows. It’s taken Android 3.0 Honeycomb and the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101 to actually deliver, however: an eye-catching hybrid offering the touch-usability of a slate and the content creation flexibility of a Keyboard Dock. Has Eee Pad outclassed iPad 2 or do the ASUS Transformer’s two halves not quite add up to a whole? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. Hardware With its plastic chassis and brown color scheme, the Eee Pad Transformer is always going to struggle against the brushed metal and wafer-thin build of the iPad 2. It’s a week of bad news for ZTE: not only has Huawei sued them, but Apple has snatched back its place in the IDC global phone rankings for the past quarter. Having taken fourth place in Q4 2010, ZTE now slips to fifth; Apple takes fourth with 18.7m shipments for 5-percent of the mobile phone market, behind LG in third, Samsung in second and Nokia maintaining first place. That first place is looking ever more tenuous, however, according to IDC’s figures. Nokia’s market share is down from 34.7-percent a year ago to 29.2-percent in Q1 2011, with shipment volumes climbing by less than one million units to 108.5m. Samsung too dropped share, down from 20.7-percent to 18.8-percent, as did LG, down from 8.7-percent to 6.6-percent. Only LG, however, actually saw a reduction in v...

With a name that sounds like something you'd use at a sporting event, the BlackBerry PlayBook is the latest – and most unique – Apple iPad 2 challenger. Running a new OS called QNX, with quirky features like bridging to a BlackBerry phone for secure email and an oddly confusing initial setup, the PlayBook is a stark departure from the more iPad-like Motorola Xoom. Business-minded features such as built-in viewers for spreadsheets and word processing files are welcome, and the PlayBook gets extra credit for being fast and nimble on a dual-core 1GHz processor.Throw in a 3MP front-facing camera, a 5MP rear-facing one, a bright and crisp 1200x600 resolution screen, a light 425g body and all the typical gyro, accelerometer and GPS sensors and you have the makings for a powerful 7-inch table...

Samsung is ramping up its marketing for the Samsung Galaxy S II as we get closer and closer to the May 1st launch in the UK. We still think the extreme unboxings were mighty awesome of Samsung, especially with our own Chris Davies unboxing a Galaxy S II while strapped into a rally car going 120mph over bumpy dirt roads. But this new commercial released today shifts focus from its power and speed to its amazing thinness of only 8.49mm. The commercial does a clever job of touting the thinness of the device with a familiar scenario. In the old days, a man being locked outside of a door, attempting to apologize to his upset girlfriend may just slip a handwritten note under the door. Well now, he can do the same with the Galaxy S II. They don’t seem to cheat on the door jamb height eith...

This report suggests that Apple’s iOS platform (on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch,) has a combined platform reach of 28.9 users in the five European markets in the EU5 – this number outperforming Android by 116 percent. *It’s a little bit unclear as to what comScore means by “media tablet owners” in that what I would think of when I hear the term is an iPad, a XOOM, a G-Slate, etc. What they might mean is every device...

This image appears to show that the Samsung F700 was first shown at CEBIT 2006 and released in February of 2007. What whoever made the image didn’t take the time to do was check their facts and find that although Samsung may have spoken about advancing their cell phone plans previous to 2007, they only showed the F700 design for the first time February 8th, 2007. First, have a look at the following press release. It lets you know exactly when the F700 was released in early, but not early enough, 2007: Seoul, February 8th, 2007 – Samsung today announced a new addition to it...

Sony Ericsson's original Xperia X10 was a brave first go at an Android phone, offering a large screen, a collection of social media enhancements and a stylised version of Google's rapidly growing mobile operating system. However, the X10 was hindered by delays, held back by glitchy software and arrived running the already ageing Android 1.6 - and only received an update to 2.1 recently. I head up the Consumer Devices group at Current Analysis, where we have two complementary products: data – we track product pricing, availability, and specs – and analysis – our assessment on how competitive various products and initiatives are. I recently had a client ask a question that crossed both: how many smartphones today have super-sized screens, and how big is too big? (I warned them that the answer would make a great SlashGear column.) The data answer is simple: 13% of the smartphones at the four national carriers in the U.S. have screens 4” or larger. The analytical answer is a bit more complicated. When discussing screen sizes, I don’t think you can ignore the elephant in the room – Apple – which limits its product line and does a lot of thinking and...

If you’d asked us yesterday which Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet we were most excited about, we’d probably have said Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1, or maybe its smaller 8.9 sibling. Now we’re not so sure. SlashGear caught up with ASUS today for the official launch of the Eee Pad Transformer, the company’s 10.1-inch Tegra 2 tablet that can be optionally paired with a detachable, battery-toting keyboard dock. Announced back at CES 2011, and promptly lost amid the flurry of similar slates, it turns out that ASUS could well have a winner on its hands. Read on for our first-impressions. At 271 x 177 x 12.98 mm the Eee Pad Transformer isn’t as thin as the iPad 2 or the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and nor, at 680g, is it as light. Still, it’s a neatly portable ...

Meanwhile, Microsoft is casting doubt on whether the tablet segment as a whole is going to stick around at all. Speaking to CIO Australia, Dell global head of marketing for large enterprises and public organisations, Andy Lark, argued that “open, capable and affordable will win, not closed, high price and proprietary” and suggested that the initial burst of enthusiasm around the iPad was a short-term thing. The tablet’s price and the li...

Welcome to another SlashGear Week in Review! This week was a big one in the mobile world with CTIA underway and lots more going in. We learned that AT&T had offered to purchase T-Mobile for $39 billion. AT&T hopes to repurpose some of the T-Mobile spectrum for 4G service. The full details of the HTC Evo 3D and Evo View 4G tablet surfaced early in the week. The Evo 3D has a 4.3-inch screen and a 1.2GHz processor and should be an interesting device. The Asus Eee Slate EP121 got an official release date. The tablet will hit the UK on April 20 and it will sell for the equivalent of $1627 here in the US, which is a lot of green. It’s CTIA 2011 day one, and we’re waiting for Sprint‘s keynote to begin and the company’s latest and greatest products to take the stage. We’ve already seen Samsung’s new tablets, and we’re expecting the HTC EVO View 4G to be Sprint’s latest tablet, a version of the HTC Flyer. 3D is also on the cards, and in fact we’ve just been handed a pair of 3D glasses… That would certainly fit in with the other device rumor of the morning, that Sprint will bring out the HTC EVO 3D, the flagship replacement to the HTC EVO 4G with a dual-core processor and a 3D display. The handset itself is expected to use an auto-stereoscopic, “glasses free” panel, but we’re assuming Sprint will be showing us some 3D footage recorded with ...

There is a ludicrously thin 9.7-inch shadow over tablet releases at the moment. The iPad 2 has landed, and we judged it the best tablet yet. However, we also remember the pitiful excuse for modern electronics that is the ViewPad 10 (Note the lack of 's').Fortunately, the ViewPad 10s has much more in common with the Motorola Xoom than it does its own predecessor, packing in Nvidia's Tegra 2 system on a chip for power. Welcome to the latest edition of the SlashGear Week in Review! There were big goings on this week in the tech world with a new tablet and lots more so let’s get to it. The Kinect was hacked into a 3D scanner for turning the person it scans into a 3D foam bust. The pieces it makes are like foam puzzle pieces. An ad agency in New Zealand created a new board for park benches that presses an ad into the legs of the people that sit down. When those ad pressed folks start to walk around people behind them can read the ads. Fujitsu unveiled a really cool 22-inch screen that has no cords at all. The display uses inductive power and wireless data links for a very clean look. TazTag announced that it would be showing off a new tablet at CeBIT 2011 called the TazPad. The little tablet is pret...

The “post-PC” world. Sounds great, doesn’t it. No more malware headaches, none of that awful association with dull cubicle work. Steve Jobs sits in a comfy chair and pages happily through his latest productivity-slash-entertainment apps; we imagine ourselves soaking up the WiFi in our local coffee shop, whiling our days shooting 720p video, editing it and uploading it all in one fell swoop. Dump your desk chairs, throw away your mouse mats. The iPad 2 has saved us from our shackles and shown us the light. It’s easy to get caught up in Jobs’ rhetoric. Sure, people are buying Macs, but look how many iPads we’ve sold. See how well we slotted this slice of finger-friendly beauty into peoples’ lives. This is no inflated iPod touch, and if you thought ...

The iPad 2 that launched this week is a heck of a nice tablet with great performance and a very thin profile. It is certainly more than just a minor refresh of the iPad that was already leading the tablet market. When Apple whipped out the iPad, some competitors weren’t happy. One of those competitors that suddenly weren’t as competitive as it was the day before was Samsung. A Samsung exec named Lee Don-Joo has noted that Samsung is now looking to “improve the parts that are inadequate” about the Galaxy Tab 10.1. What those inadequate parts are the exec doesn’t specify. He does note that the iPad 2 is very thin. Perhaps the Tab 10.1 will lose some weight in a future version. The exec also notes that Samsung is reconsidering its pricing strategy. That means that ...

Five days into our magical journey of discovery with the Motorola Xoom, we’ve made the following three conclusions: (1) The web browsing and email functions of the Honeycomb OS are fantastic, (2) live Android widgets on a 1280x800, 10.1-inch touch screen are a revelation, and (3) people who complain about the Xoom’s weight and power button location either passed judgment too soon, or still haven’t overcome their iPad separation anxiety. On our end, we’re still not quite ready to issue a final review verdict on the Xoom. That will come later this week, after we’ve had more time to dive into Motorola’s hardware, and (if all goes according to plan) compare it against the iPad 2. But for now we can share the following testing notes. Web Browsing Notice that the active browse...

Another year, another Mobile World Congress, and the unstoppable juggernaut that is the smartphone industry continues apace. SlashGear took its biggest team to MWC 2011 to-date, and still found more than enough to keep us busy in Barcelona. After the cut, the stand-out products, the key mobile themes of 2011, and how tablets are muscling in on smart mobility. Phones When you’ve got “Mobile” in your name you’re obviously going to have more than a few cellphones on show, and MWC 2011 didn’t disappoint. Perhaps more so than any year previous, we’d already seen at least some of the key device details in the run up to Barcelona, either via leaks – like the XPERIA Play – or through pre-launch teasers – like the Optimus 3D. This was a very interesting Mobile World Congress. And not actually in terms of devices; although we saw some special stuff, there was nothing to top the hardware inside Motorola's dual-core Tegra 2 Xoom and Atrix announcements at CES last month. But the show was certainly rather more interesting in terms of the strategy and positioning of the various mobile chip and operating system players. In terms of hardware, the LG Optimus 3D was of great interest, the Samsung Galaxy S2, Galaxy Tab 10.1 and LG Optimus Pad superb, while HTC's hardware disappointed with no dual-core (although it surely won't be long) and the specs of the HTC Flyer were a letdown – unless it can hit a stupidly low, iPad-bashing price point, of course. If you'd any doubt about it before, Android 3.0 is huge. Honeycomb is...

Overview and designThe Nokia C6-01 is the cheapest Symbian^3 handset to date - it's a definite update to the likes of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and also comes with a relatively large amount of technology under the surface too considering its smaller dimensions.Considering that the Nokia C6-01 is the cheapest of the Symbian^3 offerings from Nokia at £279 direct from Nokia or free on contract, the build quality appears and feels more akin to that of some of it's E-Series predecessors, while its price tag is nearer that of the old Nokia 5800.The power button has been moved from the top of the device, as is usual on Nokia phones, to being combined with the Call End button. Pitting iOS vs Android vs WebOS vs MeeGo doesn't seem like a fair fight. It's akin to putting a couple of our TechRadar writers in a boxing ring with the Klitschko brothers. With Apple's iPhone/iPod/iPad OS, Google's Android, plus the Symbian, Microsoft and Blackberry platforms, do we really need any more pretenders to the mobile OS throne?Yes - because 'competition drives innovation' (or so the saying goes). Android improvements will make iOS better and vice-versa. While lower-league operating systems will have to work harder to stand out, they'll help to ensure that the big two don't get complacent. And yes again - because beyond the smartphone battleground, the next big tech confrontation is about to be fought on tablet devices. It's not just a straight iPad vs Android face-off, either....

Apple has been pushed from its number four spot in the top worldwide mobile phone market, with ZTE entering the top five ranking and pushing the iPhone maker down to fifth place.
