The Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 showed up at MWC 2012 in February and slides in at the lower end of Samsung's range, but it's not the firm's bargain basement offering.Replacing the original Samsung Galaxy Mini, the Galaxy Mini 2 can be picked up for around 150 ($200) SIM-free and you can get it for free on contract starting at just 10.50 per month.As we've mentioned, the Galaxy Mini 2 isn't Samsung's entry level handset - that accolade goes to the Galaxy Y – which means it lines up against the likes of the Nokia Lumia 610, HTC Desire C and Sony Xperia U.Pick up the Galaxy Mini 2 and you're met with that undeniably plastic finish which graces Samsung's whole range of smartphones from the quad-core Galaxy S3 flagship, all the way down to the likes of the Galaxy Ace 2 and Galaxy Y.Not that we expect flashy, aluminium frames at this price point and the Galaxy Mini 2 is a solid little handset which nestles snugly into the hand, with the rounded rear complementing the curvature of the palm.While it's easy to get your mitt round the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2, keeping it there is slightly more of a challenge as the smooth plastic offers little in the way of grip, and we came close on several occasions to dropping the handset during our review period.

After last year's Galaxy Ace, the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 is the new entry-level Android phone from the world's top-ranking telephony company. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the incomparable Galaxy S3. With a 3.3" TN screen (480 x 320), a 3-Megapixel camera, an NFC chip (on a budget smartphone!), Android 2.3 and Samsung's TouchWiz UI, does the Mini 2 live up to the Galaxy brand name? Answers and more in today's smartphone review. This is light years away from the currently snowballing trend towards ever-more gargantuan smartphone displays. If you miss the old days, when your phone could actually fit in your front pocket along with your keys and change, then you'll be happy to know that there are still a few reasonably sized smartphones out there. The Galaxy Mini 2 was designed with more care than we're used to on a budget phone. The finishing is perfectly good (although the body, of course, is all in plastic), and provides for comfortable handling. One original touch is that it comes with three removable casings: black, orange and yellow. Neat! With its TN panel, the display is nothing to write home about. The contrast is barely passable and the colours are anything but accurate, with a Delta E of 11.7 (where under 3 is preferable).

Samsung Galaxy mini 2 review: Little by little

Whenever a Galaxy S phone thinks "Boy, it feels good at the top", there's always someone down below to say "You're welcome". Samsung most certainly know who to thank. It was smartphones like the Galaxy Ace and the Galaxy mini that made Android so much more accessible and helped the Koreans get where they are. This year brings the sequels to the two immensely popular smartphones and things look promising. The Samsung Galaxy mini 2 ups the resolution, adds a bit of extra oomph and improves on the looks and that's already a solid foundation for a worthy successor. Here's what else it gets right and what it doesn't: With the smartphone market still far from becoming a zero sum game, devices like the mini 2 are supposed to convert as many feature-phone and Symbian users as possible. Once they are in the right camp, it will be much easier to sell them a Galaxy S IV or even a Note 2. A solid plan indeed, but there's a catch. While the Samsung Galaxy mini 2 price tag will probably help, there are potential turn-offs that need to be addressed.

Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 Review

There's been a raft of teeny tiny smartphones recently – witness the Sony Xperia U, HTC Desire C and the mini Huawei Ascend Y100. The Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 is also small, but it's also quite chunky, feels weighty in the hand and has nice, silver curved edges. It looks good, especially with its yellow reverse panel. But can its performance live up to its looks? The display is a small 3.27 inches and is not as vibrant as some of its rivals. Nor is it as sharp – and we were disappointed by the narrow viewing angles too. Not much help if you're tilting the handset in a game like Temple Run and the display goes dark! If you want to watch the odd film or YouTube clips it's fine, but if you're a movie fan you'll really want a handset with a bigger, sharper display – the Alcatel One Touch 995 maybe. The screen is okay for surfing the net, but if you want to read text you'll need to zoom in. The screen proves responsive to swipes and pinches, which makes for a smooth experience, as long as the processor can keep up. Sending texts is not easy – you need to hold the handset horizontally because the keys are too squashed in portrait mode.

Samsung's smart phone Galaxy universe is populated by devices of all stripes -- from the pricey Galaxy S3 right down to the cheap as chips Galaxy Y. The Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 is definitely more budget red dwarf than money-burning white hot giant -- hence the dinky price tag. It's basically a slightly beefed up Galaxy Y with a very compact, palm-friendly shape and a bright yellow behind. You can grab the Galaxy Mini 2 for pocket-money prices. It's being offered free from around £10 a month on a two-year contract. Amazon has it SIM-free for circa £150. If you've already crossed into the smart phone universe, there's little to tempt you here -- so warp on elsewhere. The Mini 2 is a palm and wallet-friendly mobile that, much like the original Galaxy Mini, is aimed at tempting standard phone owners to swing into orbit around their first smart phone. Since the first Mini landed, Androids have become cheaper and more capable. A £100 outlay can now bag you a phone with a 1GHz chip and a colourful 4-inch display -- in the form of the excellent Huawei G300. If you can stomach the network branded bloatware apps clogging their interfaces, there are pretty capable devices such as the T-Mobile Vivacity or Orange San Francisco 2.

This petite-sized entry-level device is the successor to last year's Galaxy mini, and as such, it comes with improvements both on the inside and on the outside. To start, the screen is not only slightly bigger, but also sports HVGA resolution whereas the previous model had a modest QVGA display. Furthermore, the 600MHz processor has been ditched in favor of an 800MHz single core chip. But is its $270 launch price tag justified by what you get in exchange? Let's check the smartphone out and see...As you might expect out of an entry-level smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy mini 2 is made out of plain old plastic. There is a chrome-like shiny bezel around its side, while the back cover sports a fine texture that adds a little bit of extra grip and keeps fingerprints at bay. So yeah, no fancy materials anywhere in sight, but thankfully, the handset looks presentable and feels properly built.Size Visualization ToolWhat we are quite happy with is the way the Galaxy mini 2 fits in the palm. It feels like a pebble and rests naturally without being too small to use comfortably. All you need to operate the device is a single thumb.
