MetroPCS currently offers seven different smartphones, but only three of them support the carrier's 4G LTE network. Since MetroPCS doesn't have a 3G network, you're stuck in the 2G Internet slow lane without LTE. The $199 Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G offers users an alternative to the pricier LG Esteem ($299, 4 stars), our current Editors' Choice. While the Galaxy Attain is a fine midrange option, it could've been better with just a few tweaks. Design, Call Quality, and Data PlansThe Samsung Galaxy Attain measures 4.6 by 2.6 by .5 inches (HWD). At 4.2 ounces it's light, but feels kind of thick, like it's hiding a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. (It's not.) Made of shiny grey plastic with a textured back panel, the Galaxy Attain looks and feels midrange, but it's a nice, comfortable phone to hold and use. The 3.5-inch, 320-by-480-pixel capacitive touch LCD is nice and bright and looks sharp enough, although text can sometimes look a bit fuzzy. It would've been nicer to see a higher resolution. Typing and dialing numbers feels fine on the on-screen Swype QWERTY keyboard, but haptic feedback feels a bit delayed. The Galaxy Attain works on MetroPCS's LTE network where it can find it, and on the much slower 2G CDMA network where it can't.
S The Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G, which debuted at CES 2012, is a contract-free smartphone that runs on MetroPCS's 4G LTE network. At $250 without a contract (as of January 30, 2012), the Attain is one of the most budget-friendly LTE phones currently available. However, though the phone's low price will certainly attract attention, the overabundance of adware on the phone might drive some shoppers away. The Attain has a 3.5-inch, 320-by-480-pixel QVGA display, a change of pace from most of the 4-inch and larger phones out there. In my tests the screen did a decent job of displaying colors, though some of the app icons and other graphics appeared blurry. Text is readable, but you probably won't want to pore over your Google Books novels on the Attain's diminutive display. At 4.57 by 2.38 by 0.46 inches, the Attain is one of the smaller Android phones available. While it's shorter and narrower than most of Samsung's other Galaxy phones, the Attain is slightly thicker than the Galaxy Nexus (0.37 inches). The Attain's compact size makes it easier to hold, and the phone should fit easily into most people's pockets. The Attain ships with two cameras: a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and a 3-megapixel rear camera (more on those later).
MetroPCS may be the nation's fifth-largest carrier, but it plays in its own league. That's a fact I can appreciate when comparing its no-contract, 4G LTE phones to those on Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint (T-Mobile has 4G, but not yet the LTE standard.) The phones will typically have more modest features, and the network won't be as zippy. So with that in mind, the Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G is a nice addition to the carrier's lineup. It's much more eye-catching than the bland-looking LG Connect 4G, the second new handset that Metro announced at CES this year, and the specs are bountiful enough to keep your interest--and keep the price to a sensible $199.99, after a $50 mail-in rebate. Now all you have to decide is if the network has enough muscle for your mayhem. With a silver rim, sides, and backing to offset the glossy black face, the Galaxy Attain 4G is a pretty good-looking phone. It comes in at some fairly typical standards, at about 4.5 inches tall by 2.6 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick, but unless you're obsessed with thinness, its dimensions won't get in your way. I was able to slip it into the back pocket of my favorite jeans, and hold it comfortably to my ear. It weighs in at about 4.5 ounces.
