Adding to its expansive collection of Galaxy-branded, Android-filled smartphones, Samsung has reignited its Galaxy Ace sub-franchise with the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 tackling the space between the collection of dedicated entry-level and mid-market handsets.With a price point that is neither overtly friendly on the wallet or aspirationally expensive, the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 bridges the defined boundaries of the smartphone market, featuring a number of notable improvements over its predecessor whilst failing to match the collection of ground-breaking and genre defining specs as its Galaxy S3 branded sibling.Joining the likes of the Orange San Diego, HTC One V and Nokia Lumia 710 in this no-mans-land of the mobile market, the Galaxy Ace 2 has got a lot to do if it's to stand out from the crowd. It's now available for 160 on a number of PAYG deals, making it an attractive proposition for many.However, it's still facing competition from its ultra-cheap predecessor, so is there enough technology on offer here?

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 Review

We've already seen some impressive devices from Samsung this year – the Note II and the Galaxy S II for a start. But, of course, those two were aimed at the high end of the market and those with enough cash to splash out. Happily for those of us who are not so well off, Samsung has come up with a budget mobile that still packs a punch and offers a decent set of features. The touchscreen on the Galaxy Ace 2 is slightly bigger than that on most other budget devices at 3.8ins. It makes it easer to use the virtual keyboard, and with word prediction and a decent auto-correct facility, sending long emails and texts is easy. The screen proves responsive in use, offering a smooth experience for zooming into websites, and browsing the net. The screen boasts a 480 x 800 pixel resolution, so that if you zoom in on text it's still easy to read. It's good enough for watching HD films too, although obviously not up there with the big boys in the mobile market. Looking good This device is about half the price of Samsung's high-end smartphones, so corners have to be cut somewhere. The design is pretty unassuming – forget the curvy slimline chassis on the Galaxy S III and its ilk.

The Galaxy Ace proved its worth as a popular pocket smartphone, and Samsung is hoping to prolong this success with a second version of its entry-level mobile. And, given the look of its spec sheet, this all-new Ace has been given a nice boost. Indeed, the Galaxy Ace 2 has all it takes to succeed as a budget phone, with a 3.8" PLS screen (800 x 480 pixels), a 5-Megapixel camera, an NFC chip (Near Field Communication) and Android 2.3 (soon to be upgraded to Android 4.0) adorned with a lighter and less power-hungry version of Samsung's TouchWiz interface. This basic smartphone is aimed at contract users looking for a free or very low cost handset, or at anyone looking for a relatively affordable SIM-free mobile with enough power for mixed use, including some gaming and web browsing. The Galaxy Ace 2 has a similar design to the Galaxy S3 but is closer in size to the original Ace. It's a handset that has evolved in line with the market but without really bringing any innovation to the table. So Samsung has kept things simple by recycling the design and high-quality plastic finish of its high-end mobile—the Galaxy S3—a phone that's already clocked up 10 million unit sales worldwide. That's certainly a safe bet, but sometimes it pays to take a risk.

If you cast your mind back to 2011, you may recall Samsung dropping a Galaxy smart phone for the budget-conscious -- the Galaxy Ace. Well, déjà vu lovers, ace news: Sammy has done it again with this souped-up sequel. If you're lusting after the super-powered Samsung Galaxy S3 but simply don't have half a grand to burn on a phone, point your peepers at the Ace 2 -- a device that promises to put a sprinkle of Samsung's galactic magic in your back pocket for a fraction of the S3's price. The Galaxy Ace 2 is up for grabs for an affordable £180 on pay as you go, or a mid-range £240 SIM-free. It's also gratis on two-year contracts from around £18 a month. The Ace 2 is an excellent choice if you want a powerful but affordable pay as you go blower and don't have a small fortune to splash on it. It doesn't look especially dazzling, so design junkies may not want it near their fingers. Being bland is definitely its biggest let-down.On contract, the Ace 2 isn't such a great buy. Shop around and you can pick up the excellent Samsung Galaxy S2 for under £20 a month so it's not worth bothering with the Ace 2. Its SIM-free price is also not that competitive -- effectively it's pay as you go or bust.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 review: Flying high

With the Galaxy S III busy grabbing the headlines, a midrange smartphone has been making its way to a number of markets without much fanfare. But you can bet the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 won't settle for the role of just another sequel. It has a chance to prove the Galaxy S III is not the only superhot smartphone Samsung has released this season. And it's going to use it. Aiming to deliver 90% of the benefits of its extremely popular sibling for a fraction of the price, the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 plays to the company's strengths and might turn out to be one of the unsung heroes of the year. Dual-core might not be top-dog material in the Android realm any more, but it's enough to run virtually all apps and give you a nice smooth sailing around the interface. The entrance of ST-Ericsson in the smartphone race has enabled Android OEMs to make sub-?250 smartphones, with specs that would be considered high-end on any other platform. Now who would say no to a bargain like that? The recent crop of inexpensive but reasonably powered droids also answers another criticism Android has been facing lately - that it fails to offer performance in a compact package.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 Review

The original Ace was a very decent phone for its bucks last year, and the Ace 2 is quite on the way to cover that ground this year as well. It has a decent size screen with good resolution, slightly underclocked yet dual-core processor, and 5MP cam with flash plus a front-facing camera. Indeed you can't ask for much more from what this year fits into the lower mid-range Android device category. Its only disadvantage seems to be that it comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but read on to see what you get... Nothing out of the ordinary can be said about the design. It is made with the usual for Samsung black plastic, with slightly patterned tapered back, and rounded corners. Despite the unassuming exterior, the phone lies very well in the hand. It is not overly thick or heavy, but feels solid, and is very easy to operate with one hand. You can compare the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 with many other phones using our Size Visualization Tool. The power/lock button is comfortably placed on the , directly under your thumb, facilitating one-handed operation as well. This button, along with the volume rocker , and the physical home key are easy to feel and with good feedback.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 I8160 (Preview)

The original Samsung Galaxy Ace is now an entry level device at best, pushed down the ranks by the weight of two sequels. The Galaxy Ace 2 is next in line and we're talking a proper mid-range device this time. This dual-core smartphone will win no performance awards, but may as well top the popularity charts. The Galaxy Ace 2 has grown up a bit on the outside, with the most notable change being the screen - it's now a 3.8" PLS LCD unit of WVGA resolution (480 x 800) with a density of 246ppi. Samsung decided to keep the camera resolution on the new Galaxy Ace at 5MP, but they enabled 720p recording and added a front-facing camera. The internals held a pleasant surprise too - the dual-core processor runs at 800MHz and is well endowed with 768MB of RAM (quite a few dual-cores come with just 512MB). The GPU is Mali-400MP, so as far as 3D performance is concerned, the Ace 2 should match the Galaxy S II. Now, here's what else we can expect of the Ace 2. The Galaxy Ace 2 is higher up on the totem pole than the Ace Plus, very close actually to the Galaxy S Advance. This is potentially one of the best phones in terms of bang for buck.
